Never seen a play before in my life! Am I missing out, or is it some washed up actors hamming it up?

I think it depends. Some actors do a fantastic job...other's don't.

I enjoy plays while others don't. It's just a matter of preference.

R.M.F. Brown Somebody once said that the stage is the last refuge of the untalented.

I'll get round to a play one of these days!

Some plays are terrible but some are amazing. Same thing with movies and books too. On youtube some people post full plays or segments of them.

I'm reading Beowulf A New Verse Translation by Unknown . Has anyone else read it? I heard it's terrible!

LOL - Are you reading it for school? I've read it in both modern English and Middle English with translation and read to me by an awesomely accented Irish-brogued young visiting professor...and that last one was the only one I enjoyed...but it certainly wasn't the story...

There is value in studying it when you are studying literature, but really I don't see reading it for enjoyment. And the movie...not even close...Ms. Jolie-Pitt is far too attractive to play Grendel's mother.

Yeah it's for school. Someone in my class tried reading the Anglo Saxon version and it was pretty funny.

Michelle have you read any plays before?

message 162: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Mcroberts | 125 comments Yep, a bunch...but I usually only read them when they were assigned. They tend to be less fun to read. Except Shakespeare - I love to read Shakespeare :)

Michelle if you like graphic novels and Shakespeare, there are Shakespeare graphic novels. I read a Midsummer Night's Dream one.

You'll have to tell me more about those...I haven't looked any up, but it sounds great! I'm a huge fan of the classics - in their original forms or their updates :)

My favorite classics that I've read:

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Valley Of The Dolls by Jacqueline Susann Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand Lord of the Flies by William Golding Barometer Rising by Hugh MacLennan

Michelle Mcroberts | 125 comments And I am sooooooo not a fan of much of Charles Dickens' work. his stories were interesting and complex, but stories like A Tale of Two Cities is what happens to a great story concept when the author is paid by the word...

Maybe I should give the book another chance, but I don't see it happening any time soon...

Really Karina- I thought the ending was terrible!!!! I really did not like that book, and oddly enough the more time goes on the more I dislike it- something I've never experienced before...

To Michelle and Kyle- I loved To Kill A Mockingbird. It was an amazing book!! I'm reading a classic right now- For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway. It's really great right now!

Raevyn "Lucia" [I'm in it for the books] (raevynstar) I LOVED-- well, liked-- The Swiss Family Robinson.

HATRED ON KIDNAPPED!

Madeleine | 1065 comments The Great Gatsby is probably one of my all time favorites. Charles Dickens is also usually pretty goo, once you get past his language (one must always remember that he serialized and was paid by the word). I also really enjoyed East of Eden by John Steinbeck.

And of course, one must never forget the Bard.
