I am thrilled to find a five-star review for my novel, The Edge of Revolt, written by top Amazon reviewer and author Sheila Deeth. In addition to her novel, Divide by Zero, she has written The Five Minute Bible Story Series, and other books. With a Masters in mathematics from Cambridge University, England, she is a a top reviewer for Amazon, Goodreads, Gather and other reading sites. This is what she says:

Uvi Poznanski’s The Edge of Revolt completes her chronicles of the Biblical King David, offering a clash of swords, cultures and dreams as the aging monarch faces his end. The story follows on where the previous volume left off, but can equally well be read alone. It depicts a very human king, writ large on the pages of scripture and history, and draws a convincing background to his battles and family. Trapped in that eternal triangle of loyalty, love and duty, he watches his children fall into wounded adulthood and can’t protect or direct them. He’s dragged into war, as surely as he has dragged women to his bed. Betraying, betrayed, scheming and schemed against, he’s grown convincingly old, and he mourns what he’s lost. But perhaps, in the end, he’s also offered the chance to find what he needs amongst all the things he thought he wanted.
I love this series for its convincing depiction of real people in ancient times, for its unflinching honesty, and for its vividly real characters. This David is no cardboard cutout to be filled in with bright crayoned colors. This Bathsheba is no plaything. And women will stand on the stage of history, will have their voice, and will cry out for love and hate and hope.
Echoing with phrases from the psalms, singing with a lonely king’s “hope for redemption... when prayers go unanswered,” and filled with real characters who have “learn[ed] their lessons—not from ... psalms, but from ... deeds,” this novel brings the Bible to life, takes readers deep into David’s mind, and leaves us knowing the characters of the past, or even of the Bible, weren’t so different from people today after all.
I love the series, and I love the novel; highly recommended.

In my excitement I stumble across a thought, which is so outlandish that immediately, it makes me sober up. “What if he suspects something,” I ask, in a whisper. I hate to admit it, but it is not love for my father, nor respect for his age, that drive me to such hesitation. Rather, it is fear: The fear to be found out.

Author of War Songs, Grady Harp, describes himself as being ever on the alert for the new and promising geniuses of tomorrow. He is an artist representative, gallery owner, writer of essays and articles on figurative and all Representational art for museum catalogues and for traveling exhibitions, and an Amazon Hall of Fame Reviewer. I am honored that he has posted this five-star review for my trilogy, The David Chronicles:

Uvi Poznansky wears a coat of many colors. Originally from Israel where she studied Architecture and Town Planning then moving to the US where she studied Computer Science and became an expert in Software Engineering, Poznansky managed to combine the design elements of two studies into unique formats. And she has accomplished the same with the other side of her brain - making visual her ideas (she is an accomplished painter, drawer, and sculptor who has enjoyed exhibitions both in Israel and in California, her present base) and making words in poetry and in short stories and children's books. THE DAVID CHRONICLES is to date her supreme achievement. Having read each of the three volumes the reviews are combined here. RISE TO POWER is the first book of the series and is adorned on the cover with an image of her own painting!
But the miracle of Uvi Poznansky's writing is her uncanny ability to return to old stories and make them brilliantly fresh. This retelling of the Biblical David unveils a character far more profound and fragile than the slayer of Goliath. His personality radiates from every page as her grows from valiant lad to eloquent hero and Poznansky's gift for poetry renders a magical hue to every aspect of this story. A PEEK AT BATHSHEBA is the second volume, once again adorned on the cover with an image of her own painting. In this novel, the author's synopsis serves the book well: 'Against the backdrop of wars, raging within the land and without, David is growing into the mantle of leadership. Between his anointment as a tribal king and his anointment as the king of all of Israel, he uses wisdom, cunning, and his own understanding of the forces of history, aiming for high ideals: stopping the bloodshed, uniting the nation, and bringing about healing and peace. But then, having reached his peak, David falters. He makes a serious error that threatens to undo his political success, and cost him not only the adoration of his people--but also the sense of being sustained by a divine power. That error is the most torrid tale of passion ever told: his deliciously forbidden love for Bathsheba, followed by his attempt to cover up the ensuing scandal by sending her husband--who serves him faithfully in his army--to his death.
David uses modern language, indicating that this is no fairytale. Rather, it is a story that is happening here and now. Listen to his voice as he undergoes a profound change, realizing the magnitude of his sin, and the curse looming over his entire future.' THE EDGE OF REVOLT is her third installment of THE DAVID CHRONICLES novel and gratefully is again adorned on the cover with an image of her own painting! `Struggling to find the right balance between loving his sons and upholding justice, David is silent when Amnon rapes his daughter, Tamar, and when Absalom lures Amnon to his death. These crimes go unpunished, because a mysterious change has come upon the king, which his court scribes note even before he does. In the past he had to explain his actions, such as the affair with Bathsheba, to them. Now, they want to understand the opposite thing: his lack of action. In families other than his, such matters may be a mere matter of gossip. Yet when assault, incest, and murder occur in the king's family, they affect matters of the state. David is toppled from his throne, and must escape from the son he adores, Absalom. Even as he finds a way to quell the revolt and come back to the City of David, the road ahead seems unclear. How will he find the right successor amongst his remaining sons, the one who will connect to him and continue his legacy?'
But the miracle of Uvi Poznansky's writing is her uncanny ability to return to old stories and make them brilliantly fresh. This retelling of the Biblical David unveils a character far more profound and fragile than the slayer of Goliath. His personality radiates from every page as he progresses to old age and Poznansky's gift for poetry renders a magical hue to every aspect of this story. At times startling, as times awe-inspiring, and at all times fine reading, this is a welcome addition to the growing library of one our more important writers.

A Favorite Son is inspired by the question, for this son, is it love for his father and respect for age that drives his hesitation—or rather, it is the fear to be found out?
I have long been fascinated with the story of Jacob and Esav. To me, it captures several layers of emotions which we all go through in our families: a rivalry between brothers, the way a mother’s love, unevenly divided, can spur them to action, to crime, even; and how in time, even in the absence of regret, a punishment eventually ripens.
The story had been brewing in me for several years before I put pen to paper. Being an artist, I had expressed it through sculpture long before I wrote the words. In my art, and in my writing, you can see Yankle and his mother Becky, plotting to cheat the father. Out of a sense of shame, they are unable to look each other in the eye...

James DiBenedetto, the author of the Dream Series, is my 'partner in crime' in the creation of the boxed set titled At Odds with Destiny. He asked me about the ideas that propelled me to bring together the ten authors who are taking part in this exciting project. So I opened with, "Lately, despite being an intensely private person, I have found myself increasingly engaged with readers and listeners. Why? because of my characters. Having sprung from my mind onto the page, they might die there, pressed between the front and back covers–unless I make it possible for them to spring from the page to your mind..."

Mary Ann Vitale is the author of lovely children's books. I am thrilled to find her review of my novel, A Peek at Bathsheba:

A Peek at Bathsheba is a great book that truly surprised me, I didn't know what to expect. It brings to life that particular Bible book of King David. The king goes through his turmoil, hopes, mistakes, passion, and love for Bathsheba. There are wars, blood shed, betrayals, and peace plans. He makes it clear what his role is as king. He has humor. I laughed at the remark made comparing a woman to a fruit. The book is written in a contemporary style, making us aware of the similar questions, mistakes, we share in our modern world. I love the author's poetic style!

Born in Potsdam, Germany, Gisela Sedimayer has a love for the written word. Having moved to New Zealand and then to Austria, and having fought her cancer with the best weapon--creativity--she is the author of the Talon series, bringing the story and the characters to life over the course of several years. I am thrilled to find her review of my book, Twisted:

What a unique collection by Uvi Poznansky. The tales are laden with mystery and macabre.
The first story: A dead woman lost her name and was looking for her name. She always said, “I am what I am”. It was inspired by the Biblical story of Job. It really spoke to me how Job’s wife must have felt, when Job lost everything.
The next stories: I woman. The Hollow and The One who Never Leaves. The stories are about, as the first one, of a dead woman, a cat and about Satan sticking his horns where they don’t belong.
Each story spoke individually to me but took me into an amazing and unexpected direction and spin around a hyper reality and course. It was amazing how Uvi’s mind is working, but left me thinking twice again.
I have to say, I have never read a story so mysterious and macabre and unique. But again, I enjoyed each story, because each story had something to tell and gave a message and left me thinking.
I won’t go deeper into each story, you better read the book.

Below, somewhere in the women’s quarters, children are starting to awaken. I hear their voices: some cry, others call for their mothers. One of them, a young girl, runs out to the courtyard, then stops and turns her head back.
I squint against the light, which allows me to recognize her: she is my grandchild, Absalom’s child.
Now she waves at me. Her laughter is so pure, so melodic. It is full of silvery notes, which reminds me of my own daughter, Tamar, and the way she used to laugh, before silence overtook her.
I want to go down to the child and put my arms around her to keep her safe, now and in the future—but I know that it is not in my power. Even so I murmur to her, across the distance, “Let you never surrender to silence, because if you do, it would leave you with the rusty, poisonous taste of shame.”
The child has opened the gate. Like me, she is watching the sunrise. I wonder what it means for her. Perhaps, hope.
One day my daughter, Tamar, will stop listening to the dictates of those who wished to hush her. She will no longer obey the words, ‘Shut up,’ which she must still be hearing in her mind, in the voice of Amnon, who raped her. Nor will she obey the words, “Be silent for now,” in the voice of Absalom, who sought to protect her.
The real shame—now I know—is to consent to silence. A day will come when she will transform her suffering into meaning, into words.

Every day I tear a leaf
From my calendar, blanched by the sun
Here's spring... It is so brief
Leaves now falling, one by one...
Once more it's spring, the fragrance's sweet
And blossom spreads again, again
With graying hair, there in the street
I sit: a lonely, crestfallen man
Do you remember: a student’s room
With a single narrow iron bed
That eve, of golden summer bloom
We fried potatoes, words unsaid
The plates we set down on the floor
And filled our glass with cheap, warm wine
Between our kisses, love we swore...
For that lost moment, how I pine!
A star came on, peeking in
Out of the depth of a strange, dark night
The entire world was here within
A serenade of love, delight

Mirrored in the open wing of the piano, her face is so young, so alive with the red glow of her hair. Her green eyes shine back from the polished surface. This, I suppose, is why my father is so drawn to Anita. Apparently, he wants her to learn to play the piano, but then—even though she is just a beginner—he expects her to reach a level which no one can sustain—

Secrets, passion, betrayal...
Coming back to his childhood home after years of absence, Ben is unprepared for the secret, which is now revealed to him: his mother, Natasha, who used to be a brilliant pianist, is losing herself to early-onset Alzheimer’s, which turns the way her mind works into a riddle. His father has remarried, and his new wife, Anita, looks remarkably similar to Natasha—only much younger. In this state of being isolated, being apart from love, how will Ben react when it is so tempting to resort to blame and guilt? “In our family, forgiveness is something you pray for, something you yearn to receive—but so seldom do you give it to others.”
Behind his father's back, Ben and Anita find themselves increasingly drawn to each other. They take turns using an old tape recorder to express their most intimate thoughts, not realizing at first that their voices are being captured by him. These tapes, with his eloquent speech and her slang, reveal the story from two opposite viewpoints.
What emerges in this family is a struggle, a desperate, daring struggle to find a path out of conflicts, out of isolation, from guilt to forgiveness.
Where does the title, Apart From Love, come from?
The word Love is used sparingly in the novel, which makes it ever more precious. The title comes from a phrase used three times in the story:
After a while I whispered, like, "Just say something to me. Anything." And I thought, Any other word apart from Love, 'cause that word is diluted, and no one knows what it really means, anyway.
Anita
Why, why can't you say nothing? Say any word--but that one, 'cause you don't really mean it. Nobody does. Say anything, apart from Love.
Anita
For my own sake I should have been much more careful. Now--even in her absence--I find myself in her hands, which feels strange to me. I am surrounded--and at the same time, isolated. I am alone. I am apart from Love.

Once I find my way back, my confusion will dissipate, somehow. I will sit down in front of my instrument, raise my hand, and let it hover, touching-not-touching the black and white keys. In turn they will start their dance, rising and sinking under my fingers. Music will come back, as it always does, flowing through my flesh--

I am afraid that the future of this family, its survival in this harsh, treacherous land, cannot be entrusted into the hands of someone who, until now, has never been out and about. Never explored a new path. Never been tested by the elements--

Great review by a great reviewer for my novel, RISE TO POWER:
★★★★★ surprisingly enjoyable story
By Book Crazy TOP 1000 REVIEWER
I read "Rise to Power" as part of the At Odds with Destiny Boxed set. You can see my verified review there as well.
First, I have to commend the author for taking on such a feat as to write a story such at this. A story well known to many, but from a different POV. The idea that history may not be what we believe--after all, there are countless sides to any story. While historical titles generally bore me, alternate history has the opposite effect; I find myself fascinated.
In Rise to Power, King David (you remember the story of David and Goliath, I'm sure, even if you are an Athiest as I am) knowing his life will soon end, recounts the "true" history of his life. Something he had, before then, tried to keep hidden. You really get his whole life here, as though it were an autobiography, though of course, it's really fiction based on fact. The way Poznansky takes popular bible stories and retells them in a way that is relatable to modern times is both entertaining and fascinating.
The writing is beautiful. I would love to see what Poznansky could accomplish with non-religious material, should she ever take that route. Her ability to capture character and emotion is nothing short of literary excellence, and the modern flair really only adds to that, allowing for a more engaging voice and style.
Well done. I look forward to reading more from this collection as well.

Now if you ask me, the guests are here for no other purpose than to pay tribute to me, as I rise over their heads in the flesh. Being in the nude, modesty has never been my strongest suit. Is it vanity, I ask you, to let them lay eyes on me, to delight in their cheers with such an open, shameless joy, and with no inhibitions whatsoever? Why should I refrain from basking in my own glory?

★★★★★ A fitting end to David's story, March 23, 2015
By Dan Strawn
This review is from: The Edge of Revolt (The David Chronicles Book 3) (Kindle Edition)
In Book three of the David Chronicles, Uvi Poznansky continues to deliver first class character development with her first-person story telling. “The Edge of Revolt” follows King David into his old age. Uvi puts us there. We discover the cracks in the king's character, apparent to those in his court, yet denied by his regal vanity until at last the King sees the truth in the shattered lives of his progeny—his murderous and dishonorable sons, and Tamar, his ravished and dishonored daughter—all victims in David's eyes of his shortcomings.
As in the first two books in the trilogy, Uvi performs masterful story telling by mining between the lines of the biblical renditions. There she finds nuggets of what-if revelation about who this David of yore really was. Again, she puts us there, this time by sprinkling the narrative and dialogue with characterizations and idioms right out of the Twenty-First Century:
“Dad,” she has Solomon ask David, “are you cold?”
And from her narraative—“. . . I am a king, and a king I shall remain till my last breath.
“Out with the old, in with the new?”
Not to be outdone by the biblical poet, Uvi has her own ways of evoking emotion and eloquence:
“Back in the palace, where we used to walk on the softest of rugs, our soles have softened. Spoiled by luxury, so have our souls. To survive this winter in the wilderness, body and spirit must harden.
Can we do it? God knows.”
Or
“... everyone knows that when Joav comes too close, as if to hug you or whisper a dirty joke in your ear, the next thing you know is a stab under the fifth rib.”
Or
“To remind him of the words uttered by Abner, the general he stabbed to death years ago, I ask, 'should the sword devour forever?'”
How like David; how like Uvi in portraying him.
Enough. If you haven't read the first two books in the trilogy, put them by your nightstand. When you are finished with them, you won't be satisfied until you've turned the last page of “The Edge of Revolt.”

I am thrilled to find a five-star review for my trilogy, The David Chronicles, written by top Amazon reviewer and author Sheila Deeth. In addition to her novel, Divide by Zero, she has written The Five Minute Bible Story Series, and other books. With a Masters in mathematics from Cambridge University, England, she is a a top reviewer for Amazon, Goodreads, Gather and other reading sites. This is what she says:
★★★★★ Biblical history, beautifully told, and set in a very real world
BySheila Deeth "Sheila Deeth" VINE VOICEon March 25, 2015
Format: Kindle Edition
The David Chronicles is a collection of three wonderful novels by Uvi Poznansky. Together they tell a tale of madmen and kings, love and betrayal, youth and old age, prison cells and freedom’s ring. Drawn from Biblical history, they vividly recreate character and place, inviting readers to see the world of King David as his contemporaries might have seen it, from the giant Goliath to the rebellious son, wounded daughter, and fickle wives.
The David of these novels is no saint, but rather a wise and careful man, brought down as he struggles to balance love and duty against nation and family. The world around him is dangerous, rife with plots and wars. And a wise king, singing songs, will do well to take care how history will see him.
I love this series for its convincing depiction of real people in ancient times, for its unflinching honesty, and for its vividly real characters. This David is no cardboard cutout to be filled in with bright crayoned colors. His Bathsheba is no plaything. And his women will take their place on the stage of history, will have their voice, and will cry out for love and hate and hope.
Echoing with phrases from the psalms, singing with a lonely king’s “hope for redemption... when prayers go unanswered,” and filled with real characters who have “learn[ed] their lessons—not from ... psalms, but from ... deeds,” this sequence of novels brings the Bible to life, takes readers deep into David’s mind, and leaves us knowing the characters of the past, or even of the Bible, weren’t so different from people today after all. It's highly recommended!

You know you want it, A Favorite Son
The clock is ticking, time to run!
Book Description:
This story is a present-day twist on the biblical story of Jacob and his mother Rebecca plotting together against the elderly father Isaac, who is lying on his deathbed, in order to get their hands on the inheritance, and on the power in the family. This is no old fairy tale. Its power is here and now, in each one of us.
Listening to Yankle telling his take on events, we understand the bitter rivalry between him and his brother. We become intimately engaged with every detail of the plot, and every shade of emotion in these flawed, yet fascinating characters. He yearns to become his father’s favorite son, seeing only one way open to him, to get that which he wants: deceit
“What if my father would touch me,” asks Yankle. In planning his deception, it is not love for his father, nor respect for his age that drives his hesitation—rather, it is the fear to be found out.
And so—covering his arm with the hide of a kid, pretending to be that which he is not—he is now ready for the last moment he is going to have with his father.

★★★★★ Excellent Telling of an Old Tale
ByPatti Annon April 3, 2015
Rise to Power by Uvi Poznansky is a stand-alone historical novel, even though it is Volume 1 of the David Chronicles box set. Rise to Power chronicles the story of King David with a little bit of Goliath and a whole lot of Saul.
I'm picky about the historical fiction I choose to read. When it's done well, I'm a fan. I'm also a fan of Uvi Poznansky and her contemporary work of literary fiction, Apart from Love, so I began reading with confidence that Ms. Poznansky's deft hand could change genres with aplomb.
Historical fiction recounting a familiar story requires a creative mind to make the story fresh, even though we already know the ending. It's why the Greeks saw hundreds of versions of Oedipus and Elizabethans never tired of watching Caesar mutter, "Et tu, Brute?" Readers and play- and movie-goers desire to be entertained with a perspective they've not yet imagined.
The task demands a command of plot structure, development of characters, and a unique unfolding of events. Ms. Poznansky achieves it all in Rise to Power.
Even more challenging for the author is point of view. In this novel, the reader jumps right into the mind of David, who takes us on his journey from his job as Saul's court jester and musician to his encounter with the Philistine Goliath and beyond. The first person point of view sets it apart from other retellings because now we’ve entered into the realm of the author’s imagination as she envisions how David might have felt at all the junctures in his life.
The story of Kind David recounts the magical myth of a man--perhaps the original story of poor boy triumphant in his rise to glory. Going inside the mind of the man himself provides us with more than a mere recounting of the details we already know. His rise to glory--seen through his eyes--follows the universal contrasts of fear and bravery, disgust and lust, joy and depression, love and hate, disapprobation and respect.
The author captivates the reader with the first line of Chapter 1: "I am so thrilled." This chapter is preceded by a Prologue set later in David's life where he expresses anything but the joy of this first glimpse into his mind as a young boy summoned to play before King Saul.
Let the roller coaster ride to power begin. I am now anxious to read Volumes 2 and 3, A Peek at Bathsheba and The Edge of Revolt. I'm impressed with all aspects of this work of historical fiction, so I am certain the rest of The David Chronicles will follow suit.

I am thrilled for the invitation by Victoria Howard to write a guest post on her website, MUSINGS OF A ROMANTIC SUSPENSE NOVELIST.
I titled it: Characters that linger.
This is how it starts:
During the year of writing my novel, Apart From Love, I discovered several ways of advancing the story. It originated from a short story about a twelve years old boy coming face to face, for the first time in his life, with the sad spectacle of death in the family.
I set it aside, thinking I was done with it. But this character, Ben, came back to me and started chatting, chatting, chatting incessantly in my head. So I asked myself, what if I ‘aged’ him by fifteen years? Where would he be then? Would he still admire his father as a hero—or will he be disillusioned at that point?

Opulence and wealth surrounded him. The deep carpet felt plush on his bare feet, the rich exotic scent of flowers and coconut oil permeated the air. But he noted only the windows and doors, trying to remember possible escape routes--

As Uriah is summoned back to the court I ask myself, why is he so obstinate, so determined not to visit his wife? It is possible that a hint, a rumor of his her adultery has already reached his ears? If so, is there any course of action open to him?

Haven’t you just come from a military campaign?

Coming out of so long a trance, oft-repeated formulae took over. He told himself that when he woke he would be totally refreshed, and remember everything valuable that had transpired. He told himself that he would be stronger, quicker in body and mind, than he had been before he ventured to his rest-place. He told himself that only good would come of what he’d learned there.
Then he counted to three, opened his eyes, and sat up abruptly.
There before him, nothing had changed except shadows. These had grown shorter, then long again, as he and the adept had labored. Outside his cabin’s window, the sun was setting. The air smelled of dusk and night-blooming flowers, and carried the sounds of nocturnal insects.
For an instant he thought he was alone, that the adept had disappeared. But then he heard the old man’s voice, wispy and somehow weaker than it had been in his rest-place.
And saw the old one clearly, where he had not seen the man before. Still in a cross-legged position, the adept said: “Niko, my legs have fallen asleep. Can you help me?”
It was a touch the teacher was asking for – not ‘death touch,’ but ‘life touch.’ Niko had not used such a touch since his early training. But he did now. He swung his own legs off his pallet and knelt before the old man. He held his own palm out, toward the other’s body, and slowly extended it until he felt heat, and a current, a tide as if he had touched the sea.

Seeing how exhausted I am Abishag takes the feather, ever so gently, from my fingers, careful not to touch the tip, and withdraws from me. Washing the ink off at the other end of the chamber, she bends over the windowsill, glancing at the lush trees swaying down there, in the royal gardens. Without words, she hums a little tune under her breath, and her voice is so sad, so melodious, that it tells me how desperately she misses her faraway village, from where she was taken to the palace.
She must have been eager, at first, to meet the notoriously dashing young hero, the slayer of Goliath, the idol drawn so perfectly out of legends that belong to a dying generation. Only now does she realize that I belong nowhere else but in her aging mother’s dreams.
I tell her, “Listen, daughter, and pay careful attention. Forget your people and your father’s house. Let the king be enthralled by your beauty. Honor him, for he is your lord.”
And at once I wonder, why do I take this fatherly tone with her, all of a sudden? And why do I speak of myself as if I were not here?
Abishag cannot help but yawn, which I happen to understand, because the lecture I have aimed at her bores me, too.
“So many young men, out there,” she whispers.
“So much noise,” I complain, over her excitement.
“If it’s disturbing to you, your majesty, I can go down,” she offers. “I can ask them to keep things more quiet, for you.”
“No,” say I. “Stay with me.”
“Are you cold? Shall I close the curtains?”
“No. Keep them open.”
Then, with slight hesitation, “Your son,” she says. “What does he want? Why did he come?”
“He loves me so,” I say, hoping she would not catch the irony in my voice. “Once in a long while he comes up here, to check if I’m still breathing.”
Abishag says nothing in reply. After a long pause she asks, “Did he invite you to the festivities? I would love to escort you—”
“Festivities?” say I. “No one tells me anything these days, which is why I am becoming so pitifully suspicious.”
“I see him down there,” she says. “His guests are arriving now, gathering around to greet him. They’re laughing. He’s not.”
At that I wave my hand. “Adoniah must be tired. He’s utterly weary of life here, in my palace. Luxury can be such a boring thing when you’re born into it.”
She glances back at me, her eyes wide with disbelief. “Is it, really?”
“It must be,” say I. “Unlike me, he’s never fought for what he has."

Now I rush out of the court to stop what I know is about to happen. A horde of servants forms around me, which unfortunately slows me down. They are crossing each other in great confusion, running every which way, unsure what I want, what is expected of them, and why there is such a wild, frightened look in my eyes.
“Beware,” cries one of them, pointing at the horizon. “Look: the sky is darkening.”
“A storm is coming,” cries another.
And a third one begs me, “Come back into the palace, your majesty! This is a dangerous time to be outdoors.”
I pay no attention to them, and without waiting for my stable boy to bridle my stallion I mount it.
I tap my heels into its sides, urging the animal first into trotting, then into galloping at a blistering pace down the hill to my son’s house. I can no longer deny knowing the desire that ails him, nor can I pretend to doubt the rumors. Lately, they have become wild, and far too persistent. Amnon has forced himself on young girls before. I’ve heard of it. I know it.
Now can I get there in time, before he lays a hand on my only daughter?
Blood throbbing. Veins swelling. Heart coming close to a burst. Rage. Then, a sudden gust of wind slaps my face. Blustering in from the east, a hot, howling gale whips desert sand into the air, blinding me.
I blink away the dust, the tears, and charge ahead, riding my stallion at full speed, nearly slipping over the acorns strewn all over, under the oak trees. Hooves drumming, drumming upon the dirt road, never fast enough.
As I turn the bend I spot a dark figure racing ahead opposite me through the woods. For a minute I think I see myself—a reflection of me in him. There is that young man, flying through the gap between one tree trunk and another, coming at me through the next gap, and the one after that. He crosses my path and blocks me. So I rein in my stallion, and when the dust settles I recognize him.
There, against a background of tortuous, thorny branches, sitting astride his mule, is my second son, Absalom--

I rushed to bring her a tray of ripe fruit. Then I put my arm around her and could not wait until she was done eating. Between one little nibble and another she told me, in her most delicious voice, to slow down.
“Do not arouse or awaken love,” she said, “until it so desires.”

I hear his tearful voice from behind.
“I’ll be damned,” he wails in astonishment. “The little rascal’s gone! Oh David, David... Why, why did you have to be such a smart ass, why did you dare come here, to the front... You should’ve stayed with mom...”

“Tell us the truth,” she demands. “Are you having an affair?”
So what choice do I have but to swear, “In heaven’s name, what are you suggesting?”
“I’m not suggesting,” says she. “I’m just saying.”
“I would never betray my wives!”
