What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

A girl, I think her mom's a single parent, somehow travels to another world or another time with the local bad boy. They stay there for quite a while - they have to live in tents. I think it's kind of a gypsy society, one man belly dances for the girl, I think he's trying to impress her. She ends up sleeping with the other guy though. When they get back they have to go back to her mom's house on his motorcycle, and she's worrying about what her mom will say since she's been gone so long. She got her ears pierced while she was away, and is wearing big, old-looking copper or bronze earrings.
I think it had a brown cover, and I would have read it sometime before 2000.
