Hi all! Introduce yourself here!

How did you discover io9? What's been your favorite io9 book club pick? What's your name on io9? Which is better, cheesecake or pie?

I'll start 'er off. I found io9 when a friend came over and randomly left the site up. I was hooked from there on out, and although I don't go everyday, I try to make it over a couple times a week. I feel like I've learned so much about science and science fiction from it. I especially like the recaps of True Blood episodes, although I stopped watching it during Season 4.

My favorite book club pick was definitely Feed by Mira Grant. I would never in a million years have picked up this book to read on my own because I am absolutely terrified of zombies. But I made it through and I was sobbing like a little girl at the end. I still need to look into the sequels of that.

I don't post on io9.

And pie is obviously superior, who asks these silly questions?

Tomb (tombsv) | 21 comments It has been such a long while since I discovered io9. So I can't really remember when and how!

My name is TOMB: R.O.A.C.H. on io9. :)

..and I ate so much cheesecake when I young so I grew tired of it. So the winner is pie!

message 3: by Jess (GJ) (new)

Jess (GJ) (gjwashburn) | 13 comments I discovered io9 from a link on IMDB. It was about some company basically saying that women don't like sci-fi and as a girl nerd raised by girl nerds, I clicked on the article to rage only to find that io9 was doing it for me.

I haven't done an io9 book club despite that I do Wednesday book club but two of my favorite sci-fi books (Westerfeld's Leviathan and Berry's The Manual of Detection) from past io9 articles.

My io9 username is Geesejuggler and as for cake vs pie: depends on the cake and the pie match-up. :)

message 4: by Hannah (last edited May 12, 2012 08:45PM) (new)

Hannah Wilson (hdgotham) | 2 comments Howdy all. I'm hdgotham on io9. I actually haven't once managed to read a book club book while the reading was happening (I'm hoping this group will help me keep better track, as I always seem to miss the post on io9). I did manage to read The City and The City a few months after it was a book club book.

I found io9 through Jezebel (which I found because of a story a friend linked). I just remember getting to io9 and seeing the picture of the cyborg girl and seeing the articles and thinking "These are people like me."

And as I consider cheesecake a type of pie, the answer is both.

message 5: by Jaiel (new)

Jaiel | 6 comments Allo. My little sister met me at the door saying you need to read this article by this idiot saying girls can't be gels and the response by these super cool people. Her name is geesjuggler and I am the mudderofcanton.
I don't read for book club.

What if it is key lime pie cheese cake.

The universe would probably explode. This must mean that Cheesecake Factory made the universe explode but prevented it somehow. That's how awesome Cheesecake Factory is.

message 7: by Abigail (new)

Abigail | 1 comments Hi everyone! My friend Hannah and Katie introduced me to io9. They kept telling me about all these awesome scifi blogs and I finally had to check it out for myself. I can't stop looking at it now!

I know I've seen io9 have book clubs but haven't had time to join yet. The one I've seen and almost joined was Night Circus but I wasn't really a fan of the book. I was happy to see that a few people had the same opinion of it as I did :)

I haven't registered on io9 yet but I know I need to soon.

Oh my goodness, pie or cheesecake? Really? But they are both so delicious! I guess if it was a life or death situation I'd have to go with cheesecake. Mmm, cheesecake.

message 8: by Jaiel (new)

Jaiel | 6 comments Oh it exists and it is pardon the phrase ah mah zing. I don't remember where I got it. That's how good it its

message 9: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (exploriens) | 4 comments I found io9 through a friend about two years ago and never looked back. It's become a daily obsession.

I'm Exploriens on io9.

I can not say much about the io9 book club pick as I always find out about them at the last minute and have not had time to even attempt to read the book.

I prefer pie but have had one or two tasty cheesecakes. I'm a picky eater...

Kaila (areyoustillthere) | 28 comments Mod
Well hopefully this group will help you find out about the book earlier!

message 11: by Molly (new)

Molly | 2 comments Hello! I discovered io9 a few years ago while trolling the internet for top-notch comic-con coverage. I've been hooked ever since.

I haven't participated in the book club yet, hoping to change that!

Cheesecake, hands down.

message 12: by Bri (new)

Bri (mythbri) | 1 comments I followed a link to io9 from Topless Robot a few years ago, and have added it to my list of "daily websites to check". I think that my favorite io9 book club pick has been Sandman Slim - it was a fun read. Although the first Temeraire book was fantastic. Hard to say.

I post as mythbri on io9. And pie will always win over cheesecake.

message 13: by Naradance (new)

Naradance | 2 comments It's me Nara. Yeah I'm Nara here too. I'm Nara EVERYWHERE!!! Wheeeeee!

message 15: by Tomb (new)

Tomb (tombsv) | 21 comments Welcome everyone. Even the people that didn't choose between pie and cheesecake!

message 16: by Chris (new)

Chris Howard (chrishoward) | 1 comments Hey Everyone,

I got hooked on the Morning Spoilers years ago and then io9 worked it's way into my browsing habit.

Haven't participated in the book club yet, but if you've read READY PLAYER ONE (which I think you did) that'd be my favorite.

I don't post on io9.

There is no spoon. But there is always pie.

CHEERS

message 17: by Jaiel (new)

Jaiel | 6 comments Ready player one is the best book ever!!

message 18: by Bridget (last edited Aug 03, 2012 02:39PM) (new)

Bridget (bridgealidget) | 1 comments Hi all. I discovered io9 I think a day or two after it launched -- I was reading gawker religiously then and a coworker of mine pointed out that they were launching a sci-fi/science site and I was hooked. I lurked for a long time because before io9, I was strictly a "read the article because the comments do not exist" person.
I'm golddiggersof2033.
I haven't read a book during the io9bookclub but it did prompt me to pick up Palimpsest.

Absolutely pie. There are so many kinds -- fruity, savory, chocolately while cheesecake is always essentially cheesecake with an extraneous flavor on top. (CAVEAT: I'm biased because cheesecake was my favorite dessert as a child and I once ate an entire bowl, pre-baking and made myself sick to death.)

message 19: by James (new)

James (realjimbob) I cannot remember how I found io9, I think I was sent a link to some article on there and ended up adding it to my RSS collection. I signed up here pretty soon afterwards and found this group - but it was pretty quiet here in those days. I added a few books to the group as they were being read on io9, but nobody else seemed to join in. Glad to see this getting a bit more active here...

I don't think I've read any of the book club books at the right time so far, but Feed was probably my favourite of the ones I've read so far. I'm on io9 with my twitter name - @realjimbob. Although I don't really ever post on there, I'm just a passive consumer.

Cheesecake if the pie is apple. Pie if the pie is something savoury like steak and kidney.

message 20: by Fall (new)

Fall (Fallhammer) | 2 comments Hello All,
My Name is Fall (My parents where Irish hippies)I go by Fallhammer13 over at Io9, I found the site about a year ago following a Doctor Who article and I visit daily. Pie, Pie and more Pie please more pie. I haven't joined the book club yet, but since I retired I all I ever do is read, play video games, watch sci-fi shows and go on Io9 I should huh?

message 21: by Chris (new)

Chris | 5 comments Hi, I'm RadioSilence over at io9. I found io9 because Google Reader kept throwing articles from there at me whenever I clicked the 'explore' tab. I enjoyed them, and io9 got a place on my bookmarks bar.
Can we go into more detail about the pie v cheesecake thing please? How do you define pie? Just sweet stuff or savoury too, because I do like a nice Melton Mowbray Pork Pie.

message 22: by Jess (GJ) (new)

Jess (GJ) (gjwashburn) | 13 comments Tentative ruling on the Pie: It's like White chocoltate. It's technically in the chocolate family but is frowned upon at family gatherings such as christmas and bar mitzvah.

message 23: by Jaiel (new)

Jaiel | 6 comments I am eating a key lime cupcake and thought of you guys.

message 24: by J (new)

J (hihkonbfyhk) | 1 comments Hey you guys!
Long time io9 fan. I am always behind in the readings. Looks like I beat you to Redshirts. I hope to sync up this time around. Like to get at least one sci-fi/fantasy book a month done.
Currently reading Robopocalypse. Its like a robot version of World War Z. Please don't make this book of the month anytime soon!

message 25: by David (new)

David Fraser | 1 comments It's thanks to Fall Hammer's post on the O'deck I'm here -

Discodave:ROACH MOTEL on io9 (and boy, is that a longwinded username...) Been there for a long while now, mainly due to my friend's moving from Scotland to the US and working as an editor there for a while.

I read a lot, not all the best quality - there are junk books just like there's junk food. I'm not ashamed, don't judge me.

message 26: by Cat (last edited Oct 05, 2012 06:58PM) (new)

Cat VonAwesome (catvonawesome) | 4 comments Hey y'all! Just came over after Fall Hammer's post on the O-deck. (I guess I should say that I'm CatVonAwesome over there)

This year I've been actively working to read more sci-fi and fantasy. While I may be a big genre geek when it comes to tv and movies, I haven't really read a lot of it! Boo!

Just finished "John Dies at the End" today and next up is "Ready Player One."

message 27: by Clarissa (new)

Clarissa (caperclaw) | 1 comments Hi everyone I also came over from the O-Deck post. I'm punchies over at io9. I don't really remember how I discovered io9, but for about three months I checked in every morning for Morning Spoilers and one day just decided to comment and I got stuck.

I read mostly for entertainment so I tend to read a lot of fluff. Right now I'm buried deep in a pile of YA books thanks to a file dump by a friend.

message 28: by Daniel (new)

Daniel | 1 comments Hey guys,

First of all, Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate! I have been visiting io9 for the better part of 5 years.
I read a lot of film news, so at some point I must have read some news directly from io9, and from there I started to read other posts, and was instantly hooked.
After finishing Ernest Cline's wonderful page-turner Ready Player One today, I've decided to pick up more of the books on the book club list. I'm Probably going to read Angelmaker by Nick Harkaway next.

As for the cheesecake vs pie question, can't go wrong with a nice piece of strawberry cheesecake!

Disco Witch (autumnshroud) | 4 comments Hey guys...Corpsegoddess here from io9. I'm new to Goodreads but I've been posting on io9 for about 4 or 5 years now.

Thanks to RadioSilence for letting me know about the group!

message 34: by Quasi (new)

Quasi Hatrack | 5 comments Welcome! I've gotten a lot of good recommendations from the folks here.

message 35: by Peter (new)

Peter (kingmob) | 2 comments Hello all,
I'm CetiAlpha6 on io9.
I can't remember how I found the site but I think it was through some friends who are avid Jezebel readers.
I think I'm a pie guy but a good crazy cheesecake is fun once in awhile.
The io9 book club has eluded me for awhile now but I'm in another book club in my city and our focus is on minority writers of speculative fiction. So far we've read; Zoo City by Lauren Beukes, Kindred by Octavia Butler, Reservation Blues by Sherman Alexie, and Dreamsnake by Vonda McIntyre.

message 36: by Quasi (new)

Quasi Hatrack | 5 comments If you're looking for more ideas for that other book club I would suggest Craig Strete. He was around in the 70s and 80s so it might be hard to find copies of his work now. If pressed I'd probably compare him to a native American Harlan Ellison.

message 37: by Peter (new)

Peter (kingmob) | 2 comments Cool. Thanks for the suggestion. Sounds interesting.

message 38: by Jeremy (new)

Jeremy (jlhoag) | 5 comments Hey all, like Corpse and probably Ceti I got here from RadioSilence's link on the O-deck today. I'm taosaur on io9 and other places. Not sure how or when I came upon io9, but I've taken tons of book, comic, tv and movie recommendations from both the writers and commentors. The only time I read a book club selection along with the book club was Warren Ellis' Gun Machine, which was fair to middlin. I did read Angelmaker based on book club noise, and that one was phenomenal. Currently I'm really enjoying C.J. Cherryh's Foreigner series, switching off between audio and ebook which works especially well with all the alien phonemes. It's my first Cherryh and so far it's reminding me of LeGuin's better work.

message 39: by Jose (new)

Jose Solis (pepe_solis) | 1 comments Hi. Another io9-er thankful for RadioSilence's heads up. Over there I'm just Solis (or Lowry, before Kinja) ;), I don't comment that often, though...

I probably knew about io9 via announcements in Gizmodo or Gawker. I remember thinking at the time "mmm... a blog dedicated exclusively to sf? sounds great but, surely there are not that many sf news to report daily, are there?" :P I was happy to find that I was wrong...

I haven't yet participated in a book club discussion. I may have to fix that... I'm currently reading China Mieville's The City and The City

Oh, and cheesecake, all the way... :9

message 40: by Andreas (last edited Mar 12, 2013 10:52PM) (new)

Andreas (starlionblue) | 1 comments How did you discover io9?

Been an avid fan of the website almost from its inception. It all started when someone posted a link of SciFi wire. What is now "Blastr" (yes, those fine folks at SyFy really can't name anything properly...)

What's been your favorite io9 book club pick?

Ummm...

What's your name on io9?

Starlionblue

Which is better, cheesecake or pie?

Pie.

message 41: by Harpal (new)

Harpal Singh | 2 comments I found io9 from TTA press(editors of Interzone). I usually read the books on the io9 book club in no particular order. I've already joined another SF goodread bookclub.
I like cheesecake and pie

message 42: by Disco (new)

Disco Witch (autumnshroud) | 4 comments I should have mentioned that I like pie. Not only because I like pie (and don't like cheesecake), but because Dean Winchester likes pie, and he's my spirit animal.

message 43: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Saldaña | 1 comments Heey!
I've been reading io9 for so long I can't remember when I started, but I'm a total lurker and I never comment on anything... It's my favorite website/blog though!
I read a lot but I'm horrible at keeping book clubs. Maybe this will help.

Pie is definitely the clear winner.

message 44: by Ben (new)

Ben (allsben) | 3 comments Hi,
I have been reading io9 for a while, found it after following a like from gizmodo if i recall correctly, but could have been from somewhere else.
Don't usually do book clubs because i like to read a series at a time, rather than single books, but will join in when a book pops up and catches my eye, or have read in the past.
I don't comment on io9, just enjoy reading the articles and comments when i get a chance or an article of interest pops up.
And answer is of course Pie! how is cheesecake even a choice! You cant add custard or evaporated milk to cheesecake!

PS, its a good job browsers have an in built spell check or i would be screwed!

message 45: by Josh (new)

Josh Mcdonald | 6 comments Hi, all. I've been a GoodReader for a while now but just discovered this group through an io9 post. So on to the questions:

I don't actually remember how I first discovered io9 ... I only remember that it hooked me pretty quick once I did. I post fairly infrequently under the name "josh-mcdonald". I've never been able to participate in the io9 book club, because usually by the time I find the book in question it's over and done with. Though I did read and enjoy The City and the City well after the fact.

And lastly, gotta be pie. No contest.

Chris Lites (chrislites) | 7 comments Daniel wrote: "New people! Yay! Finally, something positive from Kinja 1.awful."

I don't get the whole Kinja thing. I have a blog? What are we supposed to do with so many blogs? I don't understand how one would discover someone else's blog. It seems counter-intuitive to me to have a bunch of blogs within the blog.

message 49: by Kurt (last edited Mar 13, 2013 05:24AM) (new)
