In the never ending quest to get noticed has anyone tried using Google adwords?

I'd be interested in people's experiences, and to get the ball rolling here's a little about how things turned outfor me using google adwords for two short story titles on kindle, one a scifi tale:

http://www.amazon.com/Precious-Cargo-...

and the other a contemprary romance:

http://www.amazon.com/Scouting-for-Lu...

I'd just launched this on KDP select when Google sent me a £100 voucher for adwords (thanks Google).

For my money I've managed to get about 1.2m impressions for the scifi story and 2,250 clicks and 800k impressions for the romance short story and 1,200 clicks. CTR for the scifi story was 0.19% and for the romance short story it was 0.14%.

Obviously these numbers will vary with different key words, and I did experiment with key words during the course of burning up my money. By the end of the campaign I got cost per click (CPC) on the scifi stroy down to 2p and for the romance it was 5p.

I was charging 99p for each short story and in the space of a week sold 25 for them.

Conclusions:

- If Google want to give you an adwords credit why not use it!

- Be very precise in your targeting, you can get very low CPC I've found and that may be worth it if you are using real money and you have a higher ticket price and a very specific market. So for example if you publish a niche book for, say $8.99 you could get 70% of the cover price from Amazon so thats about $6.30. If you can get people to the site for, say 10c, and just 5% convert, then $2 spend gets you $6.30 commission, plus the all important critical mass you need.

Worth a thought? Any comments?

Thanks

Andy
