Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) We are glad you joined us Tracy. This truly international book club has everything for the history buff.

As you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post . Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post. This is how books you mention should look:

The Proud Tower A Portrait of the World Before the War 1890-1914 by Barbara W. Tuchman by Barbara W. Tuchman Barbara W. Tuchman

Please browse the topics and join in the many discussions/book recommendations. There is something here for everyone......most of all, enjoy!!!

Bart | 1 comments Hi all,
I'm Bart, 40+ years old, living in Catalonia (Spain) but originally from the Netherlands.
I'm not a history buff, but look forward to all the suggestions and comments coming from within the club.
One of the first history books I really liked was Millennium by Felipe Fernández-Armesto, mainly because it gave such a different perspective. Another favorite was Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond.
So (at the moment) I'm more into the popular history I suppose, but then you have to start somewhere, no? ;-)

Living in the center of Catalonia I would appreciate suggestions from members for some background reading on the Spanish/Catalan history. My Spanish isn't good enough to read the local accounts, and most is heavily biased being written by the conquerors. Catalonia is currently trying to become independent again from Spain, and it's an interesting (hot) topic over here.

Oh, and apart from history I like to read about the (possible) future, so I also read a lot of SF!

Mark Mortensen Welcome, Bart. I’m glad you could join us and I know you will fit right in.

You have fully mastered the book post with an A++, but still please take a moment to be familiar with other links. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo (when available) and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how another book you might mention should look:

To End a War by Richard Holbrooke by Richard Holbrooke Richard Holbrooke

message 5573: by John (new)

John (johnglassie) | 8 comments Hello.

I'm an avid reader of history (my other main interest is probably literary fiction and nonfiction) and for me it began when I was kid (in the very late 60s and early 70s) with a whole series of youth-oriented biographies of founding fathers (and founding mothers like Betsy Ross), presidents, generals, and other cultural figures. We checked them out from the school library and my friend and I would have contests to see who could read them fastest. They had blue covers.

That turned into a Civil War fascination (my dad and I would visit battlefields within driving distance of the Washington, D.C. area where I grew up) and then somehow I also became very interested in art the history of art as well as literature. (I wanted and tried to be a painter into my twenties.) Then that somehow expanded into an interest in the history of ideas, science, etc. So I like *all* that stuff now.

Hard not to mainly be thinking about politics these days though!

Anyway, greetings. Looking forward to participating.

R.M.F. Brown Hello, I'm also a new member. I studied history at university, so have obviously been interested in the subject for a long time. I'm glad to have found a like minded place to discuss history. As much as I like military history, It would be great to discuss other types of history such as social history and cultural history.
Anyway, enough of my yakkin'. I look forward to posting here, and becoming involved in historical debate.
I like American and German history these days, having exhausted most of the British stuff.

As an assistant moderator I agree with your daunting comment! It's a fun maze that members enter, muddle around and hopefully find the exit back to the book they are reading.

Mitch | 1 comments Hello, I am Mitch from KY. Please excuse my brevity and typos as much of my internet consumption is via my phone...and I have fat thumbs (GoodReads android app is not bad, btw). I have very eclectic reading interests. Nonfiction intrests trends to pre20th C history, anthropoloy/archaeology; fiction usually hovers around hard SF and mysteries of any flavor. My extreme commute has drawn me to podcasts, audiobooks and digital coursework suitable for downloading. Looking forward to the group.
