Welcome Jacqueline. Maybe you can join in the discussions of some of the books we're currently reading (on the home page of the group) or one of the upcoming reads.

Dale Hello all, my name is Dale and I live in NH. I've always had a strong interest in history and look forward to participating in this group. Seems to be a lot of different rules and protocol issues with the group, so at this point just trying to familiarize myself with them and eventually look to actively participate.

message 5706: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Hello Dale! Welcome, we are glad to have you as a member. The rules follow a few basic principles and once you get the hang of the book citations the rest is fairly easy. If you need a hand you can ask any of the moderators.

As you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post . Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post. This is how books you mention should look:

The Big Burn Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire that Saved America by Timothy Egan by Timothy Egan Timothy Egan

Garbageman | 1 comments Hi everyone, I'm Jim. I'm from Upstate NY and have a fascination with the Plains Indian Wars, in particular the individuals involved in the decision making policies. As for a singular aspect of this time period, I have to say The Months leading up to and just after the Battle of the Little Bighorn or the Battle of the Greasy Grass.

I enjoy swimming, canoeing (though the boat hangs in the garage more frequently now) and walking, but spend every opportunity that I can reading.

Glad to be in the group.

Gene Ruyle (plainsmann) | 1 comments Greetings everyone ~

What a splendid opportunity! My sincere thanks to each of you ten Moderators who are making this discovery group a reality.

My name is Gene. Born and raised in Nebraska but living in Georgia since 1968. My four life-long areas of interest -- philosophy, psychology, theater, religion -- announced themselves while I was still in the Marines and before I set foot on my college campus. These merged into that cluster of professional endeavors I still pursue and call "my work" (actor, writer, psychologist, playwright/composer, and Episcopal priest).

I've read the guidelines and also appreciate the helpful instructions on the details of making proper postings.

As a pertinent example of one of the many kinds of books I find illuminating and rewarding in this field, I'll add it below.

Happy to join all of you in a venture filled with so much promise.

History Man The Life of R. G. Collingwood by Fred Inglis Fred Inglis

Evan Paul (evanthomaspaul) Hi all,

Just joined the group and am looking forward to reading with you all. I tried, and failed, to create a U.S. History reading group with friends in the area. We started with The Metaphysical Club (awesome book!) and I only had one person show to the meeting. :(

I've been on a big U.S. History kick this year, partly because of the election and also because of my own genealogy research (1st generation came over in the 1630s to MA and CT from England). I've found that I prefer books focused on a particular period or idea, with multiple biographies woven together of the key actors involved (e.g. Team of Rivals). I'm most interested in the evolution of ideas in the U.S. (e.g. notions of freedom, democracy, community, pragmatism, etc.).

Great to meet you all,

Evan

Natalie Tyler (doulton) Washington: A Life
This is a test really to see if I can post this way.

I just took this book out of the library today.

I also picked up, because they were on the shelves, these books:
George Washington
and
The First American Revolution: Before Lexington and Concord

I do realize that grabbing books from the shelves is not the best way to make a selection; I plan to read a bit but also look at reviews and other considerations. Washington A Life by Ron Chernow George Washington (The American Presidents, #1) by James MacGregor Burns
The First American Revolution Before Lexington and Concord by Ray Raphael Washington: A Life

OK~ I am a failure. I have tried to edit this correctly and a full hour has passed so I am feeling quite frustrated.

Evan, my family came from England to CT and MA in the 1630's--but I was with them, that's how old I am.

I am very sorry that I cannot figure out how to add the authors' names. I will keep trying, however.

Kirstie Hello, all. I'm Kirstie and I live in Brooklyn with my husband. We are expecting our first baby, a boy, in about 5 1/2 weeks. I am a licensed massage therapist, but in the past I have worked as a writer and department manager at a global corporate / investment bank, as well as a special education math teacher. My personal interests include travel, cooking and dining, health and wellness, dance, and fitness.

I decided to join this group because, quite frankly, in school I never paid as much attention to learning about history as I wish I had, and I would like to be better informed. From what I can see, this group is well run and will be a great resource!

The most recent book I've read related to the subject matter of this group is:
An Unfinished Life John F. Kennedy, 1917-1963 by Robert Dallek Robert Dallek Robert Dallek

A book on my "to read" list related to this group and my heritage is:
The Choctaw Before Removal by Carolyn Keller Reeves Carolyn Keller Reeves

message 5747: by Craig (new)

Craig (twinstuff) Welcome to the group Kristie. I met Dallek this summer at a conference here in Houston and he was able to sign that book for me. It's on my "to-read" shelf so hopefully one day soon I'll get to it. He's a great lecturer and expert on political history.

Mark Mortensen Kirstie welcome to the History Club. Your book post is perfect. I too basically ignored history throughout my education, but shortly thereafter I began reading historical books of my choice.
