Thanks for the info Mark,

I have already started looking into it- and using it!

Yes William Raymond Manchester has so many books out there. And they are great history! I also have read the

The Arms of Krupp by William Raymond Manchester

and

American Caesar Douglas MacArthur 1880-1964 by William Raymond Manchester

I have yet to tackle

A World Lit Only by Fire by William Raymond Manchester

And like Alisa said I will look into the varied discussions!

message 5953: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Mikey, make sure when you post books to use all three components using the add book/author feature (book cover, author photo (when available) and author link). Also, if you group the books at the end of the post it makes it easier for folks to read. For a group of books by the same author you can cite them together, like this:

The Arms of Krupp by William Raymond Manchester and American Caesar Douglas MacArthur 1880-1964 by William Raymond Manchester and A World Lit Only by Fire by William Raymond Manchester all by William Raymond Manchester William Raymond Manchester

Hope that helps. You'll get the hang of it but if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Happy reading!

Marie (wndrwmn) Hello, My name is Marie, and I'm from Wisconsin where I work as an environmental engineer. The recent political escapades have increased my interest in American history, especially the founding fathers and presidents.

message 5955: by Mark (new)

Mark Mortensen Welcome Marie. I’m glad you joined the History Club where there is an abundance of discussion of the American founding fathers and presidents.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo (when available) and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text, because this visual alignment not only calls the reader's attention to the book/author promotion, but helps Goodreads software connect books with groups and further increases the readability of your posts.

This is how a book you might mention should look:

Thomas Jefferson The Art of Power by Jon Meacham Jon Meacham Jon Meacham

Silke | 2 comments Hello everybody,
I am German, living in Belgium and reading almost exclusively in English. I just started updating my goodreads shelves and realised that of the books I read in the last years the non-fiction ones left the biggest impression. At the same time I find them the hardest to rate. So I am hoping for some insight and feedback through this group.

I am currently not reading anything related to this group though because I need a little break from the "heavy" stuff. I am still somewhat haunted by

Bloodlands Europe Between Hitler and Stalin by Timothy Snyder by Timothy Snyder Timothy Snyder

and trying to get my head around

Dancing in the Glory of Monsters The Collapse of the Congo and the Great War of Africa by Jason Stearns by Jason Stearns.

I have a feeling that my next foray into history will probably be another American president ;-). And soon.

My name's Cameron. Goodreads just got so much more awesome because I found this group. I'm fascinated by all history, but I'm especially interested in the history of Christianity and Nazi Germany. I'm currently making my way through a book about the textual history of the New Testament, and I'm about to start Richard J. Evans' book In Defense of History, and there's a dozen more in line after that.

Hi Everyone,

I am Doug. I am 28. I live in Indiana. I first took interest in reading about history in college when I picked up Howard Zinn's Declarations of Independence. (and then A People's History of course). Once I realized that there was so much more to studying history than the garbage in the K-12 text books, I was hooked. I took a Civil War class as an elective that centered around James McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom. I am especially interested in American history, all the way from the British colonies to today (I'll add 2 more favorites below). I like to draw on other sources while I read a book to compare perspectives and supplement what I'm getting out of the book. I always take notes and add them to my extensive notebooks about various topics. I have read many books over the years and had chats with family members who read them too, but I really look forward to exchanging ideas with a bigger group here.

Mentioned above:

Declarations of Independence Cross-Examining American Ideology by Howard Zinn A People's History of the United States 1492 to Present by Howard Zinn Howard Zinn Howard Zinn

Battle Cry of Freedom The Civil War Era by James M. McPherson James M. McPherson James M. McPherson

My other favorites:

The Great Upheaval America and the Birth of the Modern World, 1788-1800 by Jay Winik Jay Winik Jay Winik

Conceived in Liberty (4 Volume Set) by Murray N. Rothbard Murray N. Rothbard Murray N. Rothbard

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Welcome to the place for the history lover, Doug. You did a great job with the book citations. You might want to add the word "by" prior to the author's name. And if there is no author photo, it is not necessary to use the avatar.
Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) Michi Hello everyone. I'm primarily a sci-fi/fantasy enthusiast, but my love of military history was recently rekindled. I'm sorry I didn't join the group sooner because you just finished The Thirty Years War: Europe's Tragedy, and that topped my to-read list. I'm rabidly interested in post-Thirty Years' War Europe and the Great Northern War's major players right now. There's a lot to be learned about how historical perspectives change over time when you compare biographies written in different eras through the lens of literary criticism. I find that almost as interesting as the histories themselves.

I mentioned:
The Thirty Year's War Europe's Tragedy by Peter H. Wilson by Peter H. Wilson

I am currently devouring:
The Battle that Shook Europe Poltava and the Birth of the Russian Empire by Peter Englund by Peter Englund Peter Englund
Peter the Great His Life and World by Robert K. Massie by Robert K. Massie Robert K. Massie
Charles XII of Sweden by Ragnhild Marie Hatton by Ragnhild Marie Hatton
