Dawn (Kat N Hat) (katnhat) Scattergories is one of my favorite games to play, and reading one of my favorite pastimes, so I’ve combined the two.

The general rules of Scattergories are you are given a list of categories and a time limit. Then the letter dice is rolled and you have to come up with something that matches your letter and the category.

This “Challenge” works in conjunction with the other challenges you may participate in this month. You may use a book to fulfill multiple items (you don't have to read 12 books this month...don't worry!) While you are fulfilling the requirements of your other challenges, be on the lookout for the following items (they may be on the cover or mentioned in the book):

The Challenge: I will post a list of 12 categories, 6 general relating to any book, and 6 specific to that month. On the last day of the month before, I will post the letter of the month. You can start reading on the 1st. The goal is to get as many points as possible by the end of the month.

Duration: June 1st to June 30th

Rules:
1.Any genre of books will work
2.Ebooks and audio count
3.You can read in any order
4.Rereads are ok but if you really reread the book

Points: You get one point for each category you can tie to a book, where the first letter begins with the letter of the month. You get double points for each time the letter of the month is used to begin a word (ex. for author if the letter was C, Cassandra Claire would be 2 points). We will not be deducting points for duplicate answers like the original game version does.

…..Note….. if you have already earned 1 point for an item and come across another item worth more points you can replace it. Please only list the one book that you are currently using for points.

Special categories are open for interpretation. As long as it is mentioned in the book and you can justify how it fits, it will work.

When you find one of the items list the Book Title and Author (or link the cover), date it, and specify where the item is found within the book. (i.e. page number, e-reader location, audio chapter)

Just like the regular game we will not use the letters Q, U, V, X, Y and Z.

Let me know if you have any questions.

June Specials

June is the month with the longest daylight hours of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. June is known for the large number of weddings that occur over the course of the month. In Iceland, folklore says that if you bathe naked in the morning dew on the morning of June 24, you are supposed to keep aging at bay for longer. Most countries celebrate Fathers Day in June. June's birth flower is the honeysuckle and the rose, both sweet smelling. June 1st is National Doughnut Day, my favorite treat with a hole.

Christine I looked through the May challenge, but since this is my first Scattegories challenge I want to make sure I'm doing it right. I just read this: "His thick, longish tousled dark hair". Would that count for the 'long' category?

message 15: by Dawn (Kat N Hat) (new)

Dawn (Kat N Hat) (katnhat) Close but no. The "T" word needs to be tied to the item. In your case thick and tousled are additional adjectives describing the item (hair) that is also long. The long item is the hair, and since hair doesn't begin with "t" it doesn't work.

Now if it had said, "His thick, longish tousled dark tresses. You could have gotten 3 points because of the long tresses and the adjectives describing it.

Let me know if that doesn't make sense.

Christine Okay, I think I've got it now, focusing on nouns to fill the category. But let me check one more: would a "sugar-laden treat" count for sweet? Treat starts with T and sugar is sweet. Right?

Ok, this makes sense to me and I understand what I'm looking for for the rest of the items but I don't see how it can work for "wedding". Could you possibly give me a sample sentence of something that would work because right now my brain is just flashing "Does Not Compute"

message 27: by Dawn (Kat N Hat) (last edited Jun 04, 2012 08:53PM) (new)

Dawn (Kat N Hat) (katnhat) Some months are harder than others when the letter comes up.

Here are a few that you could possibly find:

Tails on a Tux
Tiara (on the bride)
Train on the wedding dress
Throwing the Boquet
Tailor
Theme Wedding
Tacky Wedding
wedding day transportation

Or if you could tie it in right something like shopping at Tara's Togs for a dress to wear to a wedding.

Christine I've got more questions. I read a scene in which the ancient immortal warrior proposes to his modern day mate and tells her he wants them to get married because he "wants to honor her time and tradition." Since he is referring to a wedding/marriage when he says "time and tradition" does that count for the wedding category?

Alternatively, does the wedding themed item have to be actually in a wedding related scene? I've got another character wearing a tux, but he's at a ball not a wedding.

message 32: by Dawn (Kat N Hat) (new)

Dawn (Kat N Hat) (katnhat) I would say the time and tradition are related to the wedding so yes that counts.

However, the tux at in a non wedding venue would not count.
