Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments This has been a bad week for me. I still haven't chosen my book for this week's pick.

Glad your switch wasn't b/c you don't like the series, Meghan. :) Good review. It's been years since I read that one, but I do remember really liking the first several books of that series. I'm still reading it, but sadly it's gotten less enjoyable for me; I'm on #10.

message 202: by Emily (new)

Emily | 109 comments I just finished reading stolen. 8/8/12. I would rate it a 4/5. I was nice a continuation from the first book. I enjoyed being exposed to other groups. I will at some point continue the series.

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Glad you enjoyed it, Emily. I can't remember b/c it's been a long time since I read those first books, but have you met Paige or any of the witches yet? Or the Cortez Cabal?

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Kindling the Moon (Arcadia Bell, #1)
Kindling the Moon by Jenn Bennett
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Shelf: 'urban-fantasy'
Read: 1 August 2012
Review:
Kindling the Moon is a fantastic start to a fun, new series. Arcadia "Cady" Bell, mage and part owner of a tiki bar that caters to demons, is in hiding. She and her parents have been on the lam (separately) since her parents were accused of murder. She's determined to prove her parents' innocence. In the process, she meets Lon, a demon who has the books necessary to help her find the demon Cady believes to be responsible for the murders.

Lon (divorced dad) and his teenage son, Jupiter (nicknamed Jupe) are part of what makes this book such a great read. Jupe is exactly like I was at his age - he's precocious, sassy, and a serious chatterbox. He cracks me up throughout the entire book.
“No swearing around company.”

“Don’t let him fool you,” Jupe said, “he drops the F-bomb like a billion times a day, but he only pretends it’s wrong in front of other people. H-Y-P-O-C-R-I—” he began spelling.

“Goddammit, Jupe.”

“Language, Dad.”

The relationship between Lon and Jupe is one that I envy; they have their father/son disagreements, but are open, honest and supportive. They are exactly what Cady needs b/c she's been alone her whole life and, since she's been on the run, she keeps herself closed off from others to a great extent. And, Lon ... sigh. He's an empath, but still struggles when trying to read Cady. Their interaction is exactly what UF fans hope for - a slow build to an exciting romance.

I have already moved on to book #2, Summoning the Night, and will continue to follow this series.

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Safe travels, Sherri.

I finished my 'series catch-up' book and I'll post my review soon.

I had a really hard time picking an angel book. I finally settled on Blood Rights (House of Comarré, #1) by Kristen Painter , which I was surprised to find shelved there. I've only just started it, but so far/so good.

Hope everyone enjoys their book!

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Dark Frost (Mythos Academy, #3)
Dark Frost by Jennifer Estep

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars
Shelf: 'Series Catch-Up'
Read: 12 Aug 2012
Review:
Dark Frost, the third book in Estep's Mythos Academy series, was my favorite story so far. In this installment, Gwen learns who killed her mother (the identify of the Reaper is revealed) and exactly what Logan has been scared for her to find out about his past. Many lives are lost and saved throughout the book.

All of that made this YA paranormal a 5-star read, but the overwhelming abundance of repetitious phrases is so frustrating for me that I just can't bring myself to rate the book that high. Additionally, Gwen continues to miss clues that are right in front of her. I know she's a teenager, but the author cannot have her grow in one direction only. She's becoming better with her powers, but she's not becoming more aware even after all she's been through so far.

(I'm trying to remain spoiler-free, so I apologize if these examples don't make much sense.) For instance, why would she reject a possible way to save herself when she's already proven that what she's considering works? Why would she desperately fear something that doesn't just happen, but has to be willed to happen? It would be like me fearing that I might unintentionally jump off the roof of a building, so I avoid the top floor of buildings for the rest of my life. [Rating: 3.5★]

message 218: by Sherri (new)

Sherri | 781 comments OK for the UF shelf I did change my mind and read City of Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, #3) by Stacia Kane

For the Series Catch up I'm reading Thirteen (Women of the Otherworld, #13) by Kelley Armstrong

For angels I will be reading Under Wraps (Underworld Detection Agency, #1) by Hannah Jayne

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 541 comments I am nearly done with my Series Catch-Up shelf and then I have to read a couple of books for another challenge before I start my Angels book. We will see though. As we don't even have a 4-in-a-row yet. I am not putting up too much hope. If by some miracle there is a shelf called that doesn't give a bingo I will make sure I speed to get us that 4-in-a-row to give us a chance.

I only wish the next in the series was out so I could read it. Love the characters and am so excited to read the next.

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 541 comments Meghan's Ghosts Review
The Awakening (Darkest Powers, #2) by Kelley Armstrong by Kelley Armstrong

Book Completed: 7/25/2012
Book Rating: ★★★★
Continue Series?: Yes

This book was much better than that first book. In the first book I just wanted something to happen. Whereas in this book, the action didn't stop.

Chloe is fighting to get away from the people who have done these tests on other supernaturals to make them stronger. She has found herself in their grasps and is struggling to find a way to runaway from them. In the most unlikeliest of places she finds a friend in Tori and is still working to see if she like Derek or if she should be falling for Simon. Personally I really hope that she eventually falls for Derek. It is a really sweet relationship between them.

I am excited to see what happens in the next book now that there is a new character in the mix.

Sherri | 781 comments Just finishing up my series catchup book. Not quite sure what I think about it. I hat end of series, but even good things come to an end.

Will start on my angel book, but right now I am not feeling it. Maybe if I wait long enough another shelf will be called that I have a REALLY good book for. ;-)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments I wasn't getting notifications for this thread. :(
2011 is our next shelf, ladies! No winners yet. This (stamped) shelf would give us 4-in-a-row diagonally.

Not sure yet what I'll choose to read. Once I've finished Blood Rights I may read #2 Flesh and Blood, which was published in 2011. I'll have to check the list to make sure it's there though.

That reminds me .... this is a GR shelf, so pls check it before assuming a book published in 2011 is there. Some GR people, like me, shelve books by the year they read them, not the year they were published.

Hope everyone has a great week/end! Happy Camping, Emily!

Thanks, Sandra, for catching those questions for me. I've no idea why I'm not getting notifications for this thread. It's frustrating me!

I'm slowly, but surely making my way through my '2011' book. It's good, but RL is a time suck right now. Should be done by shelf announcement day, if not sooner.

My 'angels' review is coming up next. Hope everyone's having a great week!

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Blood Rights (House of Comarré, #1)
Blood Rights by Kristen Painter

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Shelf: angels
Read: 19 Aug 2012
Review:
Blood Rights is the first book in Kristen's House of Comarré series. It introduces us to a world of vampires, shifters, fae, and kine (humans). There are human hybrids, bred specifically to feed noble vampires, called Comarré. In this hidden world, othernaturals live their life, but they are not without rules. Vampires who break one of those rules are an anathema. They were once noble (descended from fallen angels), but for some reason, have been cast out of that society. There are also fringe vampires, lesser vampires, descended from the cursed Judas Iscariot. The fae in the world are some of my favorites to date.

When we meet our heroine, Chrysabelle, she is on the run. She's been accused of killing her Patron (noble vampire) and stealing his ring. She's been directed to an abandoned freighter where she's to meet with someone who can help her prove her innocence. There she meets Mal (vampire), Doc (shifter), and Fi (ghost).

The culture of the Comarré is fascinating. The world of the vampires, shifters, and fae is somewhat confusing at first, but once you understand the 'levels' of vampire, it's equally fascinating. And, the tug-of-war relationship between Chrysabelle and Mal is so touching yet tortured that you can't help but get sucked in and want more of them both.

There is a cliffhanger ending, so I was happy to have book 2, Flesh and Blood on-hand to jump into right after this one. Fans of UF/PNR mix in a dark world full of a variety of 'othernaturals' are sure to enjoy this series.

Gotcha. Yeah, I'm not a big fan of triangles either. Thanks for the info. I've moved it up on my TBR.

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Hi, Slayers! I'm about 1/2 through my '2011' book.

Sorry you've lost power, Sherri. Stinks when you can see others with power and you're without. We have a typhoon heading our way. Should hit this weekend, hoping it doesn't take out our power.

It's so cool you got to meet her. I have never had the opportunity to meet an author, but there are many I'd love to meet. She has created a very interesting world with this series. I read Dark Kiss Of The Reaper before I started this series. While I enjoyed Dark Kiss, I like this series better. Well, that's not entirely true. I loved the reaper's world she created w/Dark Kiss, I just like the characters in HoC better.

Anyway, both worth a read, IMO. :)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Hi, hun, I haven't finished mine yet. Sorry, I'm way behind b/c life keeps cutting into my reading time. :( But, I did post the shelf announcement early. Next shelf is magic, but not a winning shelf for any team(s). So, reading on, slayers, read on!

I posted the shelf early b/c we have a cat4 typhoon heading our way and may knock out power. Battening down the hatches and turning off the laptop. Hope everyone has a great weekend! I'll post my '2011' book review as soon as I'm done reading. Cheers!
