Andrea | 22 comments I wanted to create a new record for a book I own, but first - as always - I double-checked to see whether the book was already listed in the catalogue; and I found out that the book I own is already in the catalogue, but my cover image is different. Now, as I can't create a new record, i was wondering how I can work the issue out. is there a way to add a new record only if it differs in the cover image?

Amara Tanith (aftanith) This happens quite a lot, actually. The policy is to create an alternate cover edition.

Thanks a lot Amara!

Amara Tanith (aftanith) You're quite welcome. :)

Andrea | 22 comments how do i create a new edition? I mean... wouldn't I modify the existing one?

message 6: by Amara (new)

Amara Tanith (aftanith) Create the new edition the same way as you would create a new book, expect leave the ISBN field blank. Once the book is created, combine it with the other editions and add a librarian note that reads something to the effect of, "Alternate Cover Edition for ISBN [Whatever]".

The existing edition for that ISBN shouldn't be altered.

Vicky (librovert) | 2462 comments We never modify an existing edition if the cover is the difference. Many books are republished under the same ISBN years later with a different cover.

To make a new edition:

Go to the page of the book in question.
Click on "Other Editions"
Click on "Add a New Edition" (right top-ish)
Fill in the Information

Because it's an alternate cover edition you will not be able to add the ISBN - since it's already taken.

After you create the edition you will have to combine it with the other ones and you will be all set!

Amara Tanith (aftanith) If it was ever published with the original cover, we cannot change it. We can, however, create an alternate cover edition for you.

We'll need a link to the new cover at a non-bookseller site (as we cannot legally use bookseller data).

Mimi Barbour (mimibarbour) | 3 comments I have tried repeatedly to change the cover for my 3 novellas and have the new covers in place, tried to combine them but after I do and then go check on my author page, they're still the same?
What have I done wrong?? Does it take some time??
Mimi

message 13: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 2462 comments Mimi - I believe author pages have a 24 hour cache (may be 48 though, I can never keep them straight). If the cover is correct on the book page you should be good to go!

Krystal109 | 1086 comments Well, that's good to know. Also stupid of the publishers. Basically it means my second edition is listed as a first edition, because other than the cover it IS a first edition.

Mimi Barbour (mimibarbour) | 3 comments Hi Vicky, It's been a few days and the covers are still the same old ones on my profile page. Can I get someone at Goodreads to combine them for me and update them? I keep setting them up on their own pages but they flip back. It's the blue covers that need to show as they are the new ones. Thanks for your help.
Mimi

Vicky (librovert) | 2462 comments Mimi, Sorry I think I misunderstood what you were trying to accomplish in your first post.

The default edition (the one that shows on your author page, searches, etc) is always the most popular edition of the work. Once more people shelve your newest editions, they will become the most popular edition and show on your author page. There's nothing we can do in the mean time to force the change though.

Mimi Barbour (mimibarbour) | 3 comments Thanks for your help then Vicky, I'll wait and hope more readers come searching.
Take care...
Mimi

R.P. Dahlke (rpdahlke) | 17 comments I have a new book cover for A Dangerous Harbor but I'm not allowed to change it, a librarian has to do this. Someone contact me, please?

Amara Tanith (aftanith) We don't change book covers of already published books. Policy is to create an alternate cover edition.
