Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate... until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

Here are a couple of questions to get the discussion started. I haven't read this yet, so if you have any more questions to add, feel free!

What do you think of the characters? Cassia, Xander and Ky?

What do you think of The Society? How would you feel in Cassia's situation?

Feel free to discuss the book as you go, but please use SPOILERS for those of us who haven't gotten this far!!! (Check out the 'some html is ok' box above the post box for spoiler tags.)

Okay, I have been waiting for this thread to open lol!!

I didn't really connect to Cassia's character in the beginning but as I read on I really felt like she became a strong character as I read on.

I loved Xander's character. he was a really good character in the story and his role in the book was well needed to bring the whole story together and I hope he has a bigger role in the next book...hopefully :D

Ky which rhymes with *sigh*.....I loved his character the most!! he was so deep and smart that everything he said made me think and Cassia as well. Ky is the mystery in this whole story which gave the story a good feel and I wanted to know more and more about his character.

I liked/hated the world that Cassia and everyone lived in. Its so Calculated and structured that it seems like everyone is stepping on pens and needles and they live in fear everyday. They have no freedom of speech,no freedom to love freely or the one they love, they cant make mistakes, and they are left in the dark about almost everything that happens around them.

Loved this book and I should write my review now because I could go on and on lol!!!

MeMe Belikova First lady Ivashkov (alicebelikovreads) | 949 comments I LOVED THIS BOOK! I'm most def #TEAMKY :)

Tawna | 479 comments I absolutely enjoyed this book! I thought Xander was great and then I wanted Ky as soon as he showed up. For me, this book was a page turner!

The society is interesting and well thought out. The matching ceremony was so interesting and how they created the system to put the matches together. The glitch and the people not allowed to be in the system......

I wish she could just have both Xander and Ky in some way, love triangles with two great guys always makes me pull both ways!!!

I have read book 2 already and I am anxiously awaiting book 3!!!!

Amber Garza I love this series! But I think I'm more a fan of Xander. I know Cassia is really into Ky but Xander is such a great guy!
I'm a sucker for forbidden love though so I get the Ky attraction (even more so in the second book).

Yzabel Ginsberg (yzabelginsberg) | 247 comments Hm, I can't decide if I like this book or want to put it down. I've been reading it on and off for the past two days... reading one chapter, then stopping... but then I end up coming back to know what's going to happen next all the same. I really have to finish it to finally make a decision, I think.

Patty | 48 comments I read this book a few months ago. I like all three main characters: Cassia, Ky, and Xander. I was very interested in all the aspects of the Society and what was going on behind the scenes.

Antoinette (nette09) I am reading this and I am just starting to like Cassia, alot. I love Xander, but I have a funny feeling that Cassia is going to pick Ky instead of him...tear tear

Shiree (paranormalmomma) I absolutely love this book! I actually read it a few months ago but it was one of the first that got me started on the dystopian genre and I can't get enough of it now. The world is so sad in it but to me it also made me look at society in a different aspect. It made me extremely happy to live in a free society where we have the right to choose. But I did think the way you got food was pretty cool BUT I don't like cooking. LOL

David Estes (davidestesbooks) Pretty cool book :) Still have to read the sequel but hopefully soon!

Michele Miller (authormichelegmiller) | 41 comments Starting this today...yay! I haven't read any reviews or comments on it so I'm excited to go in blind.

Michele Miller (authormichelegmiller) | 41 comments Done and ready for book two! Tt is soooo right Ky = sigh! Xander = double sigh..a girl could be so lucky to have these two after her.

I really enjoyed this one and am hoping for more action in the next. I hope Cassia is doing some hard core training at her farm so she can rescue her man!

Donya (relaxnreadok) I really Loved this book and the second onw now just waiting for book three.... why so far away...

Antoinette (nette09) I finished this book yesterday, and I absolutely loved it. At points, I wanted to cry but then I turned the page and was happy again. I really like this author she did an excellent job. I am at lost with who Cassie should pick. I love Xander but I love Ky. Tear, tear, tear. Who do you guys think put Ky name in the matching????

I have no idea! I forgot all about who might have put ky's name in the pool. I can't wait to go buy book two. maybe some of us could do a buddy read for book 2 since the second one is not going to be a BOTM.

I'm down :)

Lol! I don't know who I like more....Ky is so mysterious and shy which is extra cute and then theirs Dander who is masculin and sweet.

I feel bad for Caddis too even though she has already made her decision to choose Ky.

Patty | 48 comments I def like Ky better in book 1. But book 2... I was split. I didn't like book 2 as much as book 1. Book 3 is supposed to include a 3rd narrative from Xander. It'll be nice to hear his voice and get to know him better.

David Estes (davidestesbooks) Ooh that will be cool, I love hearing stories from different POVs :)

Awesome! I will definitely do that.

Michele Miller (authormichelegmiller) | 41 comments I'll read two with you too, just throw a thread up when you start. Def want to know who put Ky in and why did they pick Cassia to screw with in the first place? I didn't get the explanation they gave her as to why this all happened, i guess I need to read the end again when I'm more awake!

Lol...you beat me to this post! It was funny because when I got my e-mail this morning, I was looking at the cover and wondering where I'd seen that book before. Aha! Now, I know!

Ruchi (divastar6) It was a great book! I found the first half more interesting than the end of the book, though. I read this a little while ago, though so i don't remember a lot of it. It was one of the first in my dystopian fiction reads. Cassia is a great character, and i liked Ky and Xander!! I like Cassia and Ky together!

David Estes (davidestesbooks) Yeah, it's weird, I felt like she fits pretty well with both of them so it makes it really hard!

Ahri (arilee510) I like the parts relating to how The Society works. I love when an author builds a new world. But I'm pretty much bored with Cassia and I don't feel either guy has had a strong presence yet and I'm a little bit after the midway point.

Does the story get more interesting in the second half of the book?

David Estes (davidestesbooks) I'd say it gets a little more interesting in the second half, but it's still a little slow going. I also love world building, for me that makes or breaks a dystopian novel :)

message 32: by Cari (new) - rated it 3 stars

Cari (csears) Am currently reading this and am on about page 85. It's decent, but so strange! This is really the first book I've read with a society like this though. I'm thinking based on comments it will get better. :)

message 33: by Belkis (last edited Jul 26, 2012 07:45PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Belkis (bminaya) | 603 comments I read it last week and absolutely loved it! I liked Cassia's character a lot but omg Ky, I just loved his character. And I liked Xander quite a lot as well and wish we could've gotten a deeper view of his character. But I get a feeling that there's a whole lot more to him than what has been revealed in book 1. Can't wait to start reading book 2! As for the book, I truly enjoyed the story and the fact that this dystopian wasn't full of so much death or dark details. Yes, it had its sadness and injustices and hidden evil agendas but not as bad as other dystopian novels. This one was more about the relationships and the main character's interactions. I was able to savor the story and the emotions because the pace was perfect. Not too slow and not rushed just really nicely paced. And oh goodness the writing style was almost lyrical, beautifully written. Looking forward to jumping into book 2.
