Ava Catherine | 4258 comments It is really short, and he repeats a lot of information from his other books; however, here it is presented in a concise summary, which he lists as food rules. If you have read his other books, this is a repeat, and you can save your money unless you like having his information at your fingertips. Personally, I prefer his longer books.

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments Judy, it is a good, quick green book, and a good refresher if you need it. I didn't mean to turn you off to the book, but I was a bit disappointed and felt ripped off.
Here is an idea of what you get in the book:
Rule1: Eat food.
Rule2: Don't eat anything your grandmother wouldn't recognize as food.
Rule 3: Avoid food products that no ordinary human would keep in the pantry. ( like ethocylated diglycerides, cellulose, etc.)
Rule 4: Avoid food products that contain high-fructose corn syrup.
Rule 7: Avoid food products containing ingredients that a third grader cannot pronounce.
Rule 11: Avoid foods you see advertised on television.
Rule 52: Buy smaller plates and glasses.
Each rule has one paragraph to two pages of comments in the book, which is basically common sense and information most people already know if you are into healthy eating.

I can't remember which of his books covers this material, but I think he does cover this in The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals The Omnivore's Dilemma A Natural History of Four Meals by Michael Pollan . It has been a while since I read this book, so I may not remember correctly.

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments Detect you do, Inspectors Judy and Janice. lol. : )

I adore P.D. James! I discovered her years ago and read all of her books. Now, I wait until I have forgotten enough of the book (who done it), so that I can re-read it with pleasure. I learned that trick watching an interview with Eudora Welty, whom I adore. She had bookshelves ALL over her home brimming over with books, but she took the interviewer to a rather plain bookshelf and said proudly this is my mystery bookshelf. "When enough time passes and I forget the book, I re-read the book." I thought, Eureka! Now, why didn't I think of that?

Do either of you read P.D. James?

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments I cannot imagine living through such a nightmare. Yes, his voice is amazing. I can feel the love of his father who gave his food to the starving Elie so that his son might have a better chance to survive. The raw emotion is alive on each page, and it broke my heart.

Janice (jamasc) | 59905 comments I didn't realize that Night was the first book in a trilogy until just recently.

I haven't used the library ebook services yet, but I'm glad it's there for when I want it.

message 369: by Ava Catherine (last edited Oct 29, 2012 12:51PM) (new)

Janice, I think many people are unaware of the other two books. Night gets all the press.

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments @ Judy, I have seen Day with the title The Accident, which doesn't make as much sense as far as the trilogy goes. Maybe that is why he or the editors changed it. Have you read them?

I do like A Homemade Life: Stories and Recipes from My Kitchen Table and found quite a few new recipes to try, too. I need some new recipes since Thanksgiving is creeping upon us quickly. : )

And, yes, we should be neighbors, so we can trade books easily with 456 books in common! I don't think I have ever had anyone with that many books in common with me. I need to put you on my people to follow list ! : )

@ Beth: you are too funny! : ) It just means I don't have a life! lol
