For example:

The caster chronicles:
http://www.goodreads.com/series/46766...

The last book in this "series" is:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13...

which is a graphic novel that is obviously not in the same publishers version of the series. This is okay though on GR because it is the same universe and authors? If it was a different author it would not be allowed in the series?

No, that's not correct. Series are usually by the same author or set of authors, so that's a handy first check, but a series is a collection of books where every book (specifically, every edition of every book) has been created to be a part of that series. In this case, the graphic novel was clearly created to be tied into this series. (Sometimes, if there are enough graphic novels which tie into a series, they are split off as a secondary series and listed in the series descriptions as a tie-in series of books: for example, Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Graphic Novels, clearly part of the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series but listed separately for convenience.)
