Melissa Wiebe (melissawiebe80) | 200 comments I picked up the first four books the Song of Fire and Ice series and gave up on the first book because I couldn't understand what was going on. Can somebody direct me towards an online guide of sorts that can help me with understanding the book? I don't want anything for the TV series.

Leslie I was afraid that I wouldn't like the series just for that reason but once I caught on it has rocketed to the top og my fave list. I must tell you that HBO has done the books justice by sticking very closely to the books, except for the ages of some of the charcters for obivious reasons, so if you are needing a family tree to stay straight, the ones from the TV show are great.

i couldn't agree more. i used the family trees of the characters and that helped. once you pay attention to the story, it all falls into place. really great series so far.

give it another try, Melissa. :)

Dana Crouch (Callaway) (bookknurd) | 11 comments I've found that Martin does a decent job of reminding you who is who, especially with some of the more obscure side characters. The complexity and number of story lines is a large part of what makes this series so good, IMO.
