"The Underpass" seems to me a coming-of-age poem, and a harrowing one. I love that this pass is an underpass.

Ruth | 173 comments I don't mean to be falling by the wayside here, but my life is a little hectic right now, and I'm not finding these poems an easy read. I'll pop in to the discussion when I can..

No worries.
In general I liked this batch a bit less than the first. I think the mood is extremely intense, and though I can feel it, as a reader it's sometimes difficult to hook in.
One of my favorites of these is "The Kite," where the tree begins to look like a kite and the apples are the knots in its tail.
I also liked the image in "Tristia" of thorns like "small, thick bells."

Debra Hewitt | 27 comments Sorry I haven't responded before now. I had to wait for my copy of the book to arrive via ILL to join the discussion on these poems since I couldn't read them online. I also liked the images in "Tristia" and "The Kite", and I loved the way the mostly peaceful description of the apple tree which the speaker speculates that "he" must have been looking at sets up the poignant ending:
because if his mind had been less filled with the tree,
if he'd seen my face in its wilderness, he would have understood
what the year had done...

My apologies on this fizzling out. It didn't get much response so I stopped pursuing it. Up to continue if anyone wants. Smile.
