Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I have sound both in my speakers on my laptop and in my earphones.

Same goes for when I plug in external speakers, double the sound.

Help before I go insane without my music, kthanks. :)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Hey Elle, try plugging in your headphones and go to Control Panel>Sound and set the default device to the headphones.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh just saw this in the grumpy thread.

But why would the settings need changing?

I'm baffled.

Emma (emzibah) | 4125 comments My laptop has two thingyme's that the headphones can go in. One works and one does like Elle's one is doing but I have no idea why (or why there is two jack ports for that matter!,)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Might be a problem with the headphones rather than the software, normal jack should switch off sound thru speakers automatically

message 6: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I've tried 3 headphones and I also tried the default settings bit but nope.

Even disabled my speakers and they still worked. Just HOW?!

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Sometimes gadgets just conspire to send you spare, I swear!

Emma (emzibah) | 4125 comments Stupid question and you probably have but have you turned it off and on again!!

I was just about to ask that. :)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments LOL!

Yes, I did.

I even tried it again this morning. I've brought it into work to let the IT guys who sit behind me go for it.

So far they have tried everything I did acting smug and are now equally confused.

Generally they say it means the jack is broken but if music is in both it can't be.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Okayyyyyy.

Have you tried sending Geoff a pm?

He may not have seen this thread.

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments ooo, yes good idea, thanks patti!

IT guys are still completely baffled.

Steve Robinson (steverobinson) | 2926 comments When you plug your earphones in the jack should cause the PC to mute. This is a mechanical action in the PC earphone socket - connections are made and broken when you plug in. If it's not muting the PC the socket is probably dodgy. Have you tried wiggling it (just a little bit)? If the PC sound comes and goes that's your problem. If it has no effect, it's probably still the problem only more so. Or it could be something else completely of course. :o)

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I think you will find that the IT guys are correct and that the jack is broken. Under most circumstances, when the jack breaks it shears the piece of metal that acts as the switch. This is usually because it shears off the end of the metal piece and leave no sound anywhere.

If, however, the metal piece is sheared off near the entrance to the entry hole, then it will lock into the permanently on position. This is rare, but does happen.

This is the problem you have, I suspect.

Is the laptop under warranty? If it is, then sling it back at the supplier. If not, then you might want to get the guys to jury rig you a socket on the outside to replace it.

Hope this helps.

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments IT guys opened it up and looked at the jack and as far as they can tell it's fine hence the baffledness although they are now trying what you said Geoff after I stole your suggestion and acted smug telling them my idea. ;) Trying to kill it and then make a new one.

They are also extremely surprised it still runs and have advised me to back up everything up like crazy and then either buy a new one asap or send this in and be prepared to pay a lot of money to get it fixed as the insides are a mess.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I hope you get it sorted, Elle.

And that you can get a good working laptop soon. You need it to access the group...I mean for school. Yeah, for school.

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Lol! Yeah I was speaking to my Father earlier in the week and we were discussing getting one in the student deals so it'll be cheaper. I was going to wait until Christmas but it's dying and I don't want to be stuck without one!

The problem with this laptop was partly my fault, partly a fault with it to begin with. The second fan never did work that well and I left it too long heating up the last time it broke so it screwed even more with the innards. The amount of times it broke before that couldn't of helped either.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Ah.

I really need to stop putting mine on the duvet when we Skype, eh?

When we were Thailand a few years back I saw but didn't buy a nifty laptop tray with a built in fan.

Wish I'd have bought it. It was dead cheap. Like a pound.

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I got one at Christmas and it's brilliant.

It's probably prevented any further damage as the fan is indeed broke again (I didn't notice until the guy opened it up again).

I've brought it home but they need to do more to it tomorrow. Gonna do another reboot once I've backed everything up.

They tried to get the jack to stop working and failed miserably. They even tried uninstalling sound drivers and everything, nothing seemed to stop this jack working!! I think tomorrow they are gonna take a screwdriver to it and just break it lol

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments WOOPPP!!!! Geoff! just figured out how to wipe it thanks to the powers of looking sad walking down the street and a neighbor taking pity (has the same laptop bless him!!!!)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Huh?

Sorry does that mean it's fixed?

message 22: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments it means hopefully it'll be more usable for the next lot of months until I get a new one. it might even fix the sound too. we can hope!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh cool. Good news!

message 24: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments It was a lot quicker last night when it finally came around. I'm not going to load everything onto it. Just the essentials needed for the next few months until I get my new one.
