Ever since watching Anne of Green Gables I've wanted to go to PEI. Have you been there? If so, what's it like?

Actually, yes, I've been there! I went there a long long time ago, and I was there just for one day. So we didn't see much... But it's beautiful. A very beautiful place. But it's kinda boring. There isn't that much to do, sadly. This is a place I'd go to relax though. It's a very calming place! =)

For a tourist, I'd suggest many more places to visit in Canada before PEI! ;)

Marie-Claude aka MC | 198 comments Leslie wrote: I have a question and I hope it's not stupid but, do people in Canada speak mostly English or French?"

It's not stupid! They speak mostly English. The ONLY French province is Québec, where I live. We're about 8 millions in the province (and not all speaks French, but most do!) and we're maybe 38 millions in the entire country... So you do the math! LOL

But there are some areas where they speak french too.. A lot of people in New Brunswick speaks French, as a matter of fact it's the only province who is 'officially' considered bilingual. Lots of French in Eastern Ontario and there's quite a bit of French in Manitoba.

But to be honest... Us French-Canadians are fighters. LOL We are SURROUNDED by English so we are fighting very hard to preserve our culture. =)

Oh wow, that's awesome. Again, please excuse this question if it's stupid, but are there a lot of Americans that have moved up there. I'm just curious. I never really thought about it before. I took French in high school but I never learned it fluently. I would love to though. My mom had bought some kind of cd collection to learn it, but she didn't get very far.

Marie-Claude aka MC | 198 comments French is a very difficult language to learn, especially writing. Geez, half of the population can't write it properly. And the internet and social media don't help.

I couldn't tell you if there are a lof of Americans who moved up here. There must be more in the bigger 'English' cities such as Toronto, Calgary or Vancouver. I don't think many Americans moved up here in Québec where they would be forced to learn French and send their kids to school in French... Because all immigrants that comes to Québec, their kids HAVE to go school in French, it's the law. ;)

Marie-Claude aka MC | 198 comments And these are not stupid questions! I like that I can share bits of my world with you guys! =)

Interesting! I did not know it was the law in Quebec to do French school. Good for them I think it's good that they want to keep their heritage intact.

I lived in Southern Maine growing up until 7th grade so met lots of French Canadians in the harbors. I never got to go their though (Canada).

Hey, that's great. I fully support that. I don't see why you would have to learn a new language to accommodate people who move into your country not knowing the language. I wouldn't even attempt to move to another country without learning their language. My French teacher in high school used to get onto me in class because I had a southern accent while speaking my french instead of pronouncing it in more of a French accent.

Marie-Claude aka MC | 198 comments Michele (chelemybelle) wrote: Interesting! I did not know it was the law in Quebec to do French school. Good for them I think it's good that they want to keep their heritage intact.

Well, we still have English schools. For us citizens the law is different. In order to go to English school, ONE of your parent must have received an English education. Like me, for example, if I would have want to go to English school (primary+high school), I wouldn't have been able to, because BOTH my parents went to school in French. If one of them would have went to English school, then I would have had the choice. But the immigrants... They figure that if they chose our place to live, well they must adapt to our culture. And yes, I am really happy that it is the way it is. In Montréal, which is the biggest city, it is not rare that you will be served in English rather than in French... Which makes me sad. That lady who works at Subway understands French, but she won't speak it to me. That's just plain rude, if you ask me. It is a REQUIREMENT to speak French when working with the public. Of course, being bilingual will help you get the job, but you're suppose to speak French. Sadly, not everyone respects these rules and this is what makes it hard for us to accept.

Wow this is such an important subject to me, you have no idea. I get carried away. LOL

I think that is so awesome!! I never knew that's how it was up there. I really hope to visit one day. I'll make sure I freshen up on some French before I go. The part about the different schools is wild. That you could have a choice between English and French schools if you had the choice to choose. Were the French schools more crowded?

message 33: by Michele (new)

Michele Miller (authormichelegmiller) | 747 comments Well it's a major political subject here. ppl are very passionate about it in the US bc we have so many immigrants who don't speak English and there are ppl trying to change the laws to not have English be our national language. I understand your passion for your country if I moved there I would learn French.

Marie-Claude aka MC | 198 comments No, not necessarily, because there are A LOT more French schools than English schools here. But I think their thinking was that if people got to choose, they would most likely send their kids to English school, because they'd speak French at home... So they would learn English in school so they'd be bilingual. But what would have happened if they'd allowed that?! I think there would be no more French around... So that's why they implanted that law. And trust me, there are MUCH more laws like that here. It's only in Québec where it's like that.

But eh, if you're not coming to Québec... Don't bother with French, they don't speak it... LOL :P

Marie-Claude aka MC | 198 comments For example, in my hometown... There was just one English high school for all grades.

And for the Frenchies, we had 3 high schools for grade 6-7-8 and then we would all get together in the bigger high school for the remaining years.

One other thing that's crazy... We have one year less of high school than everyone else, but before we get to go to College, we have to go through another school, which we call CEGEP, which is 2 years (sometimes 3, depending on the program)... So normally, we don't start College until we're like 20.

Marie-Claude aka MC | 198 comments And again, that's only in Québec. That CEGEP thing is retarded. And it makes half of the population give up on their education. Sad... =(

message 37: by L.P. (new)

L.P. Dover | 70 comments I would like to be able to fluently speak it though. But by the way things are going here, it looks like I might need to learn Spanish.

Marie-Claude aka MC | 198 comments LOL Yes, Spanish is taking over down there!! It'd probably be a lot more helpful than French for you! :P

We do have some 5yr high schools here where you basically graduate with a 2yr degree.

OMG, wow I'm getting a Canadian lifestyle lesson here. This is awesome!! Things are really different up there. I can't believe you have to go to a different type of school before college. Yeah I can see how that would discourage people on continuing their education.

Marie-Claude aka MC | 198 comments Leslie, you're getting a Quebec life lesson... Things are just the way they are in the States in all the other provinces... LOL

Yeah, I personally never went to college. I wanted to be a translator, and translate books obviously... But in CEGEP (we call it college here, and 'your' college we all call university!), they gave me like history of art, philosophy, psychology courses... I mean seriously?!?! I didn't give a CRAP about that. I wanted to get creative writing courses, French and English courses... Don't teach me a bunch of stuff that I won't need in University...

And I got fed up. I gave up. Sadly. I will always regret it. Now I work for a bank. I like my job, but it isn't my passion. I have a great income, and I can't complain... But it is JUST a job... =(

People don't get married so young here... Most people start thinking about their family life at age 25-30. I'm 28, still single, and I don't feel like an outcast because of it... LOL If you get married at 20 here, they'll call you crazy. :P

THE question... No. I would never move to the States. I don't like how things are being managed down there. I don't like their politics much. And how I love my health insurance... ;)

message 45: by L.P. (new)

L.P. Dover | 70 comments I had to take a bunch of prerequisite courses before starting what I wanted to do. I'm sorry you don't like your job. It kind of sucks to do something every day and not like it. I stay at home with my kids. They drive me crazy sometimes. I would have loved to be a writer. I have the imagination to do it, but my problem is figuring out where to start. I keep trying to figure out where my true passion lies. I haven't fully figured it out yet.

Marie-Claude aka MC | 198 comments BUT. I think I could make an exception and move to California. The weather just seems so nice all the time down there... LOL

I HATE MY WINTER.

But I'd move to Europe before going to the States! ;)

Hahaha, we don't like our politics here much either ;) oh well what can you do. I love the USA and we have a lot of freedoms and opportunities that other don't so I guess if we have to deal with the crazy politicians so be it.

Marie-Claude aka MC | 198 comments Snow is nice when you don't have to live in it... We get loads of snow here. But I have to admit, the winters are being a lot less worst than they used to be. I think it has to do with the whole global warming situation. But seriously though, it gets COLD. Snowstorm SUCKS big time, especially when you need to go to work. They don't close anything here when there are snowstorms, everything in full function. We are used to it... But it still sucks. Big time.

I want beaches and sun!!!! :P
