Thanks to this group I have a mountain of sailing books I have to read! Here's one I recently finished that I thought was excellent. There is a lot of technical sailing information but I have minimal experience and didn't find it to be a detriment to the story.

Amy Stapleton Hi William, I just joined the group. I haven't read Moitessier's book yet. I know it's a sailing / cruising classic though, so I need to add it to my list of books to read. I watched the movie "Deep Water" a few years ago that tells the story of the Golden Globe Race of 1969. I think Robin Knox-Johnston was the only one to complete the race. There were a bunch of disasters. Donald Crowhurst died under strange cicumstances, and Moitessier just kept right on sailing. The whole saga of that race has always fascinated me.

Interesting that you mention Deep Water because I watched it a few weeks before I started reading The Long Way. When I started The Long Way I didn't know it was related to Deep Water but that became obvious early on in the book.
I agree with you that the saga of that race is fascinating. Looking forward to your comments after you read The Long Way.

Amy Stapleton I'll let you know what I think. The Deep Water film was pretty sad, eh? It's really an amazingly tragic story about Crowhurst.

Marcie | 23 comments Deep Water was a pretty cool documentary. Not that you need more sailing recommendations William, but there is a good biography about Crowhurst called The Last Strange Voyage of Donald Crowhurst by Nicholas Tomalin. It details the family and financial pressures that led to Crowhurst being under-prepared and very indebted before the race which led to his amazingly involved deception in the race. It's a hard book to put down.
