This tale is of the three Barata sisters, Dagmar, Ophélia and Lucinda, daughters of a general who live in one of the city’s bigger houses in França Pinto Street, and of their constant concerns with money and social status. Where would one be, they seem to say to themselves, without a snooker table? The author masterfully deliniates the aspirations and assumptions of the bourgeoisie in a number of scenes none better than that of the grand dinner where he chronicles the preparation and serving onto a table loaded with best linen, glass and silver cutlery of the finest Paulista couscous ever presented to honoured guests in the great city.
