Juan (juan_murillo) First, hats off to you guys, this is a great effort and I´m very excited to have found you. Hope you can help me out with this:

I was born and currently live in Costa Rica. As you may or may not know, tourism from the US and Europe to Costa Rica has increased dramatically in the last 20 years. This has exposed Costa Rica as a possible interesting setting for stories by authors who visit it and are intrigued by its characteristics, while also making it recognizable to readers who have been here.

I am aware of these books being set or partially set in C.R.:

Jurassic Park,
Forever Peace,
A Hologram for the King(haven´t read it)

I also strongly suspect the fourth chapter of The Recognitions by William Gaddis to be set in Costa Rica. He was here during our tiny civil war in 48 and the setting, while unnamed, is recognizable as the port of Limón in the Caribbean Coast.

Considering all of this, i wanted to write and article compiling all of the fiction set in C.R. that I could find and would very much appreciate any help from the group, if any can be provided.

T.i.a!

Juan (juan_murillo) Not sure if I need to make this explicit, but I´m looking for authors other than costarican, who tend to set all their pieces here.

Tzippy (trempnvt) | 6 comments I don't have recommendations for specific books, but this is a cool Goodreads feature if you don't know of it yet:

Juan (juan_murillo) Awesome, that´s a great start. Thanks, Tzippy.

Here´s a few from that link (there seems to be a skew towards monkeys and dinosaurs):

The Monkey Thief
Of Grace and Chocolate
It's Every Monkey for Themselves: A True Story of Sex, Love and Lies in the Jungle
Midnight Rainbow

Any other additions are welcome!

sorry - for some reason i was unable to log onto goodreads for hours and hours last night. but i am here now. since you don't have any genre-requirements, or quality control needs, i just searched some lists. i could have posted this the other day - the books i had at work were completely useless. but i hope these help. some of these authors may be from costa rica, i do not know. a lot of them are crime fiction, some are sci-fi... there are more i can send you from an amazon list, but a lot of the ones there looked like the real bottom of self-pub. but i could be wrong. maybe they are awesome.

Assault on Paradise
Angel in the Full Moon: A Jack Taggart Mystery
The Futurological Congress: From the Memoirs of Ijon Tichy
The Honey Trap
The Laughing Falcon
Off The Map
The Space Merchants
The Cloud Forest
Gato Negro
Gina

this one is nonfiction, but look fun:
Monkeys Are Made of Chocolate: Exotic and Unseen Costa Rica

these are kids' books:

Tortillas and Lullabies/Tortillas y cancioncitas
When the Monkeys Came Back

this book may further help you:

Costa Rica: A Traveler's Literary Companion

i am just going by the internet that these books take place in costa rica. i hope it is not lying to me...

Juan (juan_murillo) This is great Karen, thank you so much. A couple from the list are from prominent CR writers: Assault on Paradise being probably the most important novel of the last 25 years in CR. But most of the other I had never heard of. I'll definitely look into that Literary Companion. Thanks again. If you stumble onto any other please do share.

Juan (juan_murillo) Thanks Tuck, I see this one has sloths in it, which is a breather from all of those monkeys :D This is turning into a pretty good list.

Tuck | 184 comments just one other juan, a new novel by millet, though set in belize, seems to encompass many of your criteria, huge influx of euros to the area, questions of "saving" nature vs getting dollars, geopolitical interventions etc.. great novel you may like Ghost Lights

message 12: by Juan (new)

Juan (juan_murillo) Will check it out Tuck, although i need these to be constrained to C.R. Great country, Belize, though, beautiful.

Juan (juan_murillo) Thanks Susan, will look into it. I was looking for non-costarican authors, but all books are welcome.
