GoT, ftw! Welcome to the club! :)

yep, I had lived in 8 different places by the time I was 8 (Air Force brat). And I guess I should include North Dakota in the list as I worked in the Williston Basin for 5 years, but my actual state of residence was Montana
I'll be around for a while (I've been on Amazon since 2010)

My favorite fantasy series are The Stormlight Archive series and Shades of Magic series currently. My favorite Sci-fi book will be Dark Matter, it was really a well-crafted series.
I am open to any recommendations you all might have for me! Looking forward to talking with you all !

Now as for the Science fiction novels never could get into them. I can watch them on Tv. or at the movies but when it comes to reading about them it just isn't happening.
Look forward to getting to know more about the group as well as for some of the members. Take care John (AKA Redneck1st)

Hi, Amitha If you haven't already might I suggest you check out Jeff Wheeler's Kingfountain Series? I'm on the 5 book in the series and I'm hooked on it. Also if you haven't already check out R.A. Salvatore and Terry Brooks two other very good authors whom I enjoy and thought that you might as well. Take care an happy reading.

Thank you very much for the welcome looking forward to the discussions. And maybe even learning about new authors for which I hadn't read yet. Hope you have a wonderful day.

I was born in Singapore and now reside in California. Been a big fan of the fantasy realm since childhood. A big Enid Blyton fan growing up.
Don't think I can remember all the books I read but Robert Jordan's WOT is my all time favorite. I have a novel coming out next year, trying my hand at this genre. Excited and nervous.
I love books that you can re-read and discover something you missed the first time, that means multiple plots and characters.
GOT is one of my fav, so glad it is a hit series.
I am currently reading The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro, his first venture into Fantasy I think and I cannot recommend it enough.
Glad to be here and share with you all.
Caroline

Hi Carline,
Funny I was born and raised in Ca just north of L.A. left when I was around 25. I like you enjoy books that you can re-read that is why I like authors like R.A. Salvatore & Terry Brooks who are a couple of my all-time favorites. Currently, I'm reading the KingFountain series by Jeff Wheeler. Excellent series so far I'm on book 5.

Love Shakespeare!

It's funny how Shakespeare's language simply became embedded in the way I talk and write. It is utterly infectious; I think it's the lilt combined with the pure beauty of the lines. I really enjoy the formality of sonnet writing, although mine are mainly satires, not love poetry.

Welcome all! My goodness! Seems like lots of people had very productive writing and editing summers. Congrats to everyone and good luck!

Sorry, do you mean other than Goodreads? You can get a complete listing from GR, and if you follow the author or have a few of their books on your list, it'll tell you of upcoming or newly released books, giveaways and so on.

I only joined Goodreads a few days ago, and I'm also very recently published, but I've long been interested in science fiction and fantasy. In fact, even though it might be heretical to admit this on Goodreads, I first became interested in science fiction via video games, and only later did I branch out into books.
Most people know Warhammer 40K as a tabletop game, but there's also an award-winning series of video games based on the same lore. From that I discovered the Horus Heresy series of books, and that launched me into sci fi as a book genre.

I read a good variety of books such as the Divine Comedy and The Stranger, but my favourite genres are Fantasy and Science Fiction.
Nowadays I'm reading Frank Herbert's Dune.
I have read the majority of the books included in Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere, so his books are my favourites.
I hope we can recommend eachother some nice books and have a good time!
Hi John and Héctor! Welcome! No wrong place to start loving books :) Sounds like you'll find a lot here to your tastes!

I have a lot that I really like: Lost in the Barrens, On the Island, Nightfall and Staying Alive are a few widely different ones that I enjoyed. If you check out my Survival or zombie shelves, there's a lot more.

Although I've loved reading most of my life, I only seriously got into fantasy and science fiction a few years ago. I love both - with fantasy being somewhat closer to my heart. My latest favourite author is Patrick Rothfuss. I also love Terry Pratchett, Mikhail Bulgakov, J.R.R. Tolkien, Andrzej Sapkowski. Besides reading, I love writing as a hobby (I do aspire to be published one glorious day though), and playing video games. Squeezing all that in between busy work and other obligations is a challenge I also somewhat enjoy.
Happy to be here!

I am a 41-year-old single mom to twin 16-year-old boys so my life is anything but boring. I was born and raised in Colorado, but am currently living in Northern Virginia, where I work for the Smithsonian. I have a BA in History, specializing in US Colonial/Revolutionary War History. I minored in Creative Writing but mostly write only for myself these days.
Thanks to my mother, I grew up immersed in science fiction and fantasy. We knew Asimov and Clarke and Bradbury just as well as we knew Mother Goose and the Brothers' Grimm. I remember one of the first books that I read repeatedly was A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle.
I tend to lean to the fantasy side more than science fiction these days. I am total trash for vampires - but only good vampire novels (NO Twilight!!) Currently I am really into what most would label YA Fantasy or YA Dystopian.
Looking forward to trying out new books, because even though I enjoy re-reading my favourites for the umpteenth time, I am always looking for new stuff to read.

Now after reading your post I see you like Fantasy Fiction and so I thought I'd throw a few authors out there that you might want to check out and maybe even real. R.A. Salvatore; Terry Brooks; are two that I absolutely love reading. Another author and series I recently started reading is Jeff Wheeler. Check out the Kingfoutain series. Now, this is a series that will keep you turning the pages to the end. I've finished 5 of the 6 books and I"ve pre-ordered the 6th one which won't be released until next month.
Have a wonderful day and take care of yourself.

I went to the recent UK Fantasycon and met Adrian Tchaikovsky there. I'd particularly like to recommend his "Guns of the Dawn". We all had a bit of a discussion about plot cliches, and I mentioned how annoying (indeed fascist) I found the "all bow down to the rightful king" trope. I am pleased to say that in "Guns" the heroine does not bow down to the "rightful king"...

Interesting . . .
I noticed a while back (actually over 30 years ago - pre-internet, and therefore pre-Wiki, pre-google - basically UK only, and word of mouth) there was a very strong overlap between F/SF readers and particular series from other genre . . . In that case, it was the 'Brother Cadfael' series of mediaeval detective stories. People who normally read SF only, or Fantasy only, were deeply 'in' to Cadfael.
I think I am beginning to see a similar effect between F/SF readers and Michael Connelly's work.
Would anyone else like to comment??

Howdy J will have to admit that I enjoy S. King as well from time to time. He's a wonderful author. Are you into Fantasy Fiction at all?
But as for reading it's a great way to pass the time. Especially on my days off.

My name is Sam and I just turned 23 on the 14th. In May, I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Finance, got married a week later, and moved a week after that from Knoxville, TN to Columbus, OH. I am finally getting settled in to my new home, job, and marriage.
I have been an avid reader all of my life and took it upon myself to convert my husband into one as well before we were married. For the longest time I only read scifi and fantasy books but I have been trying to diversify in the last few years. Despite branching out into different genres, I always come back to scifi and fantasy.
Historically, I tend to gravitate more towards fantasy, specifically Epic fantasy, but I also love a good Gaslamp. I always thought that I didn't like dystopian but I think I had too narrow of an idea of what that was supposed to mean. I do not, however, enjoy urban fantasy or paranormal/supernatural books.
I stumbled across this group whilst searching for my next binge read and thought "the only thing that can make reading and loving a book a book better is talking about it afterwards" so here I am.
Hi J and Sam! Welcome!
You both might enjoy our group read The Last Policeman. Our other one is sort of a fairytale retelling/reimagining, which I am also enjoying quite a bit.
Hell yes to epic fantasy! Are you ready for the release of Oathbringer?

Hi, Sam, I got a niece named Sam as well. I see some congrats are in order for you with your graduation, job, marriage, and move. Allot to happen in such a short time I wish you well and Welcome you.
Like you I love Fantasy Fiction novels and might I suggest a few authors you might want to check out? R.A. Salvatore, Terry Brooks, and Jeff Wheeler. I am currently reading Jeff Wheeler's Kingfountain series and it's a great read if I do say so. I'm currently waiting for book 6 which won't be out until the 14th of Nov. Currently, I'm reading The Maids war which is a Prequel to the series.
Take care and hope you enjoy the group as much as I do.

Well, now I'm going to have to get the first two of this series as I'll have to admit that it looks great. Thanks for mentioning it Allison or I might not have known about it.

I've been using goodreads to find reviews and books to read for a good couple years maybe, but only today made an account.
I am an avid reader, mainly fantasy, history, non-fiction, philosophy. But pretty much anything goes in a tight spot. I usually prefer fantasy over scifi, since present day reality and my own mind produces enough of the often very dark and hopeless scenarios of scifi. Reading (good) fantasy is like meditation.
Finding good fantasy on the other hand often feels like winning the lottery. I'm hoping this group can help in this matter.
Hmm, some random info about me: I live in Helsinki, capital of Finland. I love crocheting, drawing and painting, making jewelry, thinking of new ways to use stuff (like making jewelry out of computer parts etc.), music and cats.
Looking forward to finding good reads and conversation!

Hi Nikki and welcome to the group. As for me, I'm more of the Fantasy fiction type i.e. Terry Brooks, R.A. Salvatore etc. Currently reading the Kingfountain series by Jeff Wheeler and as I wate for the last book to come out on the 14th of Nov I'm currently reading the Maids war which is by jeff wheeler and a prequel to the Kingfountain series.
Welcome, Nikki and Heta! Nikki, I think you're going to fit right in!
Heta, I was just in Helsinki in July for the Tuska Open Air. Loved the city! I hope we help you increase your odds of finding good books. In return, if you win the actual lottery, I'll just take $1000 for every book you find while in the group. I think that's fair ;-)

Hello in Finland I hope you are having a great day. Now check out some the authors for which I've mentioned in the above post. All 3 are great Fantasy authors for whom I enjoy reading. Let me know some of what you've read already.

I have been on Goodreads for quite a while, but this is the first time I have had the courage to join a group. I'm quite shy, so I might not participate in a lot of discussions, but this seems like a really nice group - and I didn't want anyone to think I was lurking, so thought I'd at least say hello! I am always looking for more books that I might like, and this seems like an excellent place to find them. I have read 16 of your top 100 (*edit - 32 from the whole list!), but I also have quite a few more marked as TBR.
I have read so many great books I don't know where to start listing them, but some of my highlights from 2017 include:
Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison
The Liveship Traders trilogy by Robin Hobb
The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson
I don't exclusively read SF & Fantasy, but I definitely tend to enjoy it more than other genres. I'm currently reading the Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo - I find that after something heavy-going (The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, to be precise) YA novels can be very refreshing!
All the best, Liz
Hello ,I am Sachin from Nepal.
It's a chilling night here in Kathmandu and I am alone ,truely and utterly alone.

As for David Eddings, I don't remember reading any of his I'll have to look him up. I was thinking of reading the Shannara series again as it's been over 30 years. And I see his got more in the series for which I've not read at all.

*waves* Hi Nikki! Thank you for the welcome, I knew this would be a nice group :-)

Yay you've been in Helsinki, I'm glad you liked it here! :) Tuska is one of the better music festivals we have. The festival goers might look a bit, hmm, scary but are the nicest people. <3 I better start buying lottery tickets so that I can give you your well deserved 1000 for every good book I find here! ;3
Hi John!
I'll be sure to check out those authors! Some of my favourites are Roger Zelazny, Glen Cook and Seth Dickinson. I loved The Traitor Baru Cormorant, can't wait for the next part! :)
Welcome Liz and Sachin! Glad to have you both! Sachin, I hope it's the good kind of alone--one with lots of books!

I'm Nick from Salt Lake City, Utah. I currently live in a place called Lehi --which is different than my liberal SLC. I have a wife and four kids. On our property we have a large gardens, chickens, goats, horses, a cow, turkeys, a cute cat, and all manner of other creatures. I'm a city boy at heart, but my wife has been showing me her country ways the past few years.
I am an author (won't be pushy here at all). I've published some comic books, I used to write movie reviews, and I've sold a screenplay or two.
I'm back at writing reviews for fun. I post movie reviews sporadically on my blog. I just wrote a review for Dune Messiah here on Goodreads. It's gotten a few organic likes, so I think it's worth reading. (People are so "meh" about that book. I make a case for it as a magic trick masterpiece that knocks your third eye into orbit.)
At the moment I'm battling stage IV cancer. So, reading has been a much needed therapy. I'm coming up on a one month long hospital stay away from my kids. So, hello Kindle and hello book queue.
Please friend me! I want to see interesting books and thoughts pop up in my feed. I want to talk shop and have a literary ol' time. And I'd love feedback on my upcoming reviews. I'm going to challenge myself to treat criticism as an art form and see what happens. A boundary pushing experiment, if you will.
I used to loathe writing and reading criticism, especially film critique. But some strange urge has been pulling me back in. Perhaps it's my mind's way of trying to order the chaotic and turbulent emotions of a terminal disease. Maybe I'm just being lazy because I still have a manuscript, and a couple comic scripts, on my desk gathering dust. Either way, I'm enjoying the process and the end product -- so that's where it counts.
This seems like a chill, intelligent and well managed group. Happy to be here.
Hi Nicholas! I hope you have a successful treatment and that the time goes quickly. You're in the right place to talk books!

I read a variety of books, but when it comes to SciFi and Fantasy, I'm much more of a SciFi reader now (used to read Fanstasy, but my reading tastes have changed).

Howdy Karin and welcome to the group your in the right place for talking Sci-Fi or fantasy. Me I prefer Fantasy over the SCI-Fi but that's just me. There is a bookshelf which has about 240 or so books that are suggested reading. And there is a list floating around where you can vote for books for the group reads.
take care and I hope that you enjoy yourself.

Thank you! I'll take all good vibes as far as the big C goes.

Though some loathe it, I like nothing better than researching the past, and each time I gain new knowledge about our tortuous evolution, our failures and struggles, and human social behavior in all its odd and diverse forms.
