Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments Where we can talk about books as often as possible. Trying to pick out what to read or tag along reading with others. For us to chat about books we are reading or anything or the sort. You know... ;)

message 2: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) We didn't have one of these? That's strange. It seemed like you came up with every topic one could last December lol

message 3: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments Perhaps I'm just not seeing it. I didn't think what are you currently reading was the spot for this either. Who knows.

message 4: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) No I don't think that would would be a good spot. I shall have to start reading soon so this topic gets lots of love :)

message 5: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 1455 comments Well I am currently reading Pleasure Unbound (Demonica, #1) by Larissa Ione . Nice, hot, sexy read! :)

message 6: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments Oh, that one is one my list. I've had the first five signed sitting on my shelf for too long. I opened up 3 books this morning and none where what I needed so I started to listen to The Name of the Star (Shades of London, #1) by Maureen Johnson & it is great. I"m glad I didn't just read something I didn't want to.

message 7: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) No, that is no fun at all. I need to read/listen to that one. It's on August's to-read list, so hopefully I'll get to it!

message 8: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments Z it is really great! Listen to it now!

message 9: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments It was surprisingly really good. I finished a shawl while listening and i mowed my yard as well. Its a decent size but i totally swiped my g'mas riding lawn mower. Ha Ha!

message 10: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) LOL! Someone was very productive today! Finished a book, mowed, finished a shawl. Wish you could pass on that gene to me! :) How was the narrator?

message 11: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 1455 comments I am excited to get around to that book as well. I am still reading Pleasure Unbound. Just haven't been too much in the mood to read lately. Mostly watching the Olympics when I am awake and not at work.

message 12: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) I've haven't been in much of a reading mood either. Every time I think about reading Torment I just get tired.

message 13: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments Watching the Olympics now and working on another shawl.

The narrator did a great job for Name of the Star. Phelps just gave the gold to Lochte. Hmm... I think so anyway.

Must be something in the reading air because I picked up about 8 books and read a few pages out of each just to try to find something to read. Nothing is jumping out at me.... Yesterday, but today I really sat down with Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen & it actually is really good. I thought it would be slow but my 15 minutes and one chapter ended up being 40 pages before I knew it. I was almost late going to my g'mas to visit and knit.

message 14: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) LOL! That's definitely the signs of a good book. And yes, Phelps pretty much gave Lochte the gold, but it's not like anybody was close to taking the silver from him; besides, Lochte's USA, too.

message 15: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments Yup, it was a nice thing to do.

message 16: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (Reading is Better With Cupcakes) (imjustcupcake) | 233 comments How do you guys do audio books? I've never really done them. I tried one. Then I realized like half an hour later I had no idea what had just gone on...

message 17: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 1455 comments I usually listen to it on my way to work. It is usually more than a 1/2 hour. I usually listen to it during while doing something fairly mindless. I have better attention to what is going on then.

message 18: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments I usually listen to the audiobooks while I make shawls. That way I am doing two productive things at once. I don't like sitting around doing nothing. Sometimes I listen while I cook. That is a lot of standing around and stiring or flipping so it gives me something to do then. I don't watch much TV. Plus after a few I started liking and enjoying them more.

message 19: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) I can pretty much listen to an audiobooks no matter what I'm doing, except for watching TV and reading. I can't think of much else that keeps me distracted. There are time when I get distracted by my own thoughts, but usually the book's good so I'm paying attention.

message 20: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments I just picked up some books from the library. Yup, for the low low cost of some gas. Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally Vanish (Firelight, #2) by Sophie Jordan

Oh, yeah. I am set for the weekend!!!

message 21: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) OOOOH! Let me know how you like Vanish and Will Grayson. I love John Green, and I have yet to get Vanish from my library. Catching Jordan looks good, too. *jealous*

message 22: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments Haven't started any yet. Making myself finish Water for Elephants. I am almost done with it. It's really good. At least I'm surprised I like the whole circus bit and pieces. But I started listening to Leviathan (Leviathan, #1) by Scott Westerfeld while I was doing dishes. *Cheers* For Steampunkery!

message 23: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 1455 comments All right! I am going to read Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater now...will see what I think...

message 24: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments I'm on the opposite end of the pool with that one. Most really like it. I can just tolerate it.

message 25: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally Girls I just finished this one in a night. The sports theme was really good. If you like this one, when you get to it, you might like Shut Out by Kody Keplinger . I read this one as a ARC last year. Know of any other sport YA books that are good?

Hey Mad, are you taking part in the Ravellenic Games?

I listen to podcasts a lot when I knit but I also have
Nocturnal on my phone at the moment. I hope it doesn't scare me into dropping a stitch!

I'm also reading The Unbreakable Child: A Memoir About Forgiving the Unforgivablewhich is a well written book about a horrific subject.

message 27: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments I should figure out how to get podcasts once I get a new phone. Nocturnal... something I shiuld look into.

Sounds like a tough one to read. Hope you like it. Its always great to find taboo subjects written so well. Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson & Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys are good taboo books to me. Rape and Stalin's holocaust.

Girls any other books about really taboo subjects? Perhaps, Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler Its lighter theen the other reads but is about her best friend slash boyfriend dying then his sister telling her to get with twenty guys to get help her loose her virginity at a rather young age.

message 28: by Madilynn (new)

Madilynn | 165 comments oooh! I am reading The Lens and the Looker. I am having a hard time getting into it. Has anyone read it?

message 29: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments I havent even heard of it. What is it about?

message 30: by Madilynn (new)

Madilynn | 165 comments these kids who have to go to a history camp thing. I just started reading it. It was a free friday book.

message 31: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments Free fridays!! Yeah! B& N?

message 32: by Madilynn (new)

Madilynn | 165 comments Yep!

message 33: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments Ladies! I found a new hot Steampunkery book and it is pretty darn tootin good so far! It is a bit hard to read because it is adult. Which also means that I'm just not flying through it but I have to process what I read as well. Anyway, I think you might like this one too! God Save the Queen (The Immortal Empire, #1) by Kate Locke I also think the bookcover is hot. That is a plus. LOL!

message 34: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments I finished Vanish (Firelight, #2) by Sophie Jordan . Has anyone else read this one? I felt it to have a bit more whine to it then I would like. She started to grate on me. But I think I will still have read the third book and have a trilogy marked off the list of series I all started.

message 35: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 1455 comments I will have to look into God Save the Queen. It looks really good. Plus I love me some Steampunk.

I read Shiver and gave it a 3 star. I just wasn't as good as I had hoped. I just wanted something more out of it.

Also just finished Bed of Roses (Bride Quartet, #2) by Nora Roberts which was also not that great. Seriously you can't start a romance book off with the two characters already loving each other. They need to fall in love with each other!

message 36: by Mad Scientist (last edited Aug 17, 2012 03:31PM) (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments Yeah, I really didn't like Shiver that much. The first time or the second time. I can't believe I even reRead that one. Ugh...

Well, as for Steampunkery in God Save the Queen, it is very minor. The cover is a bit deterring. It has quite a mystery unfolding though.

I read the first book of the Bride Quartet for some other group read. (I say I forced but I actually ended up liking it. Don't tell anyone.) However, I didn't move on because I was thinking what you just said. Ah, they already love each other. What can they add? Roberts isn't tossing in a third wheel.

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) ♥Madilynn♥ wrote: "oooh! I am reading The Lens and the Looker. I am having a hard time getting into it. Has anyone read it?"

Oh I have that one. And the Bronze & the Brimstone. But I just can't get into L&L. Have to give it another try soon.

message 38: by Madilynn (new)

Madilynn | 165 comments I finished it!

message 39: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Awesome! How'd you like it? Is it worth pushing thru?

message 40: by Madilynn (new)

Madilynn | 165 comments Yes! I now want to read the second book :)

message 41: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Too bad we don't live anywhere near each other; I could let you borrow the second one. I'll definitely have to read them soon if you say it's worth it!

message 42: by Madilynn (new)

Madilynn | 165 comments Yeah, I wish I lived alot closerbto many people. I think you should read them.

message 43: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments You are in MN I'm in WI. That isn't too far ;)

message 46: by Madilynn (new)

Madilynn | 165 comments Oh.

message 47: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments What series have you started and never finished?

Do you want to finish it or is it just not good?

message 48: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Do you really want me to answer that? LOL cuz there are tons. Almost every series I own. Actually...yeah almost. Minus one or two of them :)

message 49: by ★Meghan★ (last edited Apr 04, 2013 02:56PM) (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 1455 comments I am right in same boat as Zakiya. We are rowing in the same general direction. Start a million series, but never finish any of them.

I did just finish the 2nd book in the Delirium series by Lauren Oliver. I really liked the 2nd book, but was slightly disappointed by the first. I am really looking forward to reading the 3rd book in the series.

I am definitely down for trying another book in a series that will put me a little further past #1. Do you guys have any series you all are looking into getting a little further on. I have too many to count. We can maybe make it the next MBOM. I know the The Gunslinger was a major bomb that sucked in more ways than one. I am still less than half way through that book. I still need to go back and finish it.

message 50: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Gunslinger was definitely a bomb for me. I never even got around to borrowing or buying it. One of these days....
