Seems we have a lot of people in this group who have rescues. I'm so glad that a lot of people are going to shelters now to rescue dogs.
So, glad to be hearing from everyone.

LOL, that's the first question I ask - must love dogs!!!!! Welcome to the group!
Welcome Julia. Hopefully he will get over his fear of dogs. I don't think I can ever live without my dogs.

I recently got my "50" dog :o) We have 3 dogs now, they're all seniors and my newest (the young one) is 8.
I decided that for 50, being as it was such a big # I would treat myself to what I most wanted which was a dog I could walk with again. My Bulldog measured walks in houses, as in "we walked 2 houses and back today"
New dog Sophie although she's 8 is still active and we can walk for an hour. Sophie came from a Rescue and is a Pitty/Lab mix. My 50th isn't until December but I met her at a PetAdoption event and it was love at first sight.
I hope you get your 50 dog. 50 is a good time to ask yourself "if not now, when?"

But I am happy to get into this club-looks like you guy/gals exchange alot! :)
I am an animal person! 7 dogs, 8 cats (+ 13 kittens, most of whom need to be placed as soon as they're weaned) and I love horses and want a couple really soon, I had several, but financial hardship unfortunately interfered. :(
I too am nearly 50-my B, day is tomorrow- July 13th, 1966 (actually only 47) and my animals are really the closest thing to a family I have- LOVE them!!! :) Buggers that they are sometimes-I spent the morning putting one of my small dogs back into the yard again and again until I found his escape burrow! Lol, needs to see the neighborhood....scarred me silly. Anyway , very nice to meet you-look forward to the club.

Congratulations!!! sounds like a great 50th <3

Wow, I'd say you certainly are an animal person! Happy birthday!

Hi Jami,
Bulldogs are the best :o) We're on Bulldog #3, my first dog as a "grown-up" was a Bulldog and I've had one ever since :o)
They rock ~ for the right person ~ probably the same as any breed, your lifestyle determines which breed is best for you.
I work in a bookstore and did a ton of breed research eventually deciding on a Bulldog or Basset. I wanted a dog who wanted to sit on the couch and read with me and that didn't need really long walks. Bulldogs were perfect!
The only thing I'd caution with Bullies is to really research your breeder, they are prone to a hearbreaking # of health issues. We've had 2 dogs from a wonderful breeder and very few health issues. Katie is my Bullie now and she's 12.
With your very long lived dogs you must be doing everything right! Old dogs are the best :) If you decide on a Bulldog there are starting to be a lot of Rescue ones looking for new homes
Happy Belated Birthday!

Hi Christine, Welcome to the group and Happy Birthday! It's hard to keep groups active. I try but it doesn't work unless the group helps. This group of people on here are great and animal lovers. We all love to talk about our pets.

Thank you Barbara- have a great weekend!

Thank you Jami-have a great weekend! :)

I also volunteer for the Vancouver SPCA. Below is a link to a video of me helping the Australian Shepard/Lab cross 'Callie' wind down after an aqua-therapy session. (I'm the old fart with no hair)

I wasn't allowed pets growing up so reading animal books was one of the ways I could get my "fix"! ;-) I have always loved them and even grown-up now, still count many of the animal stories I read during childhood as my favourite. I recently re-read Watership Down and it was still brilliant! I especially like animal fantasies like that, where the animals behave like animals in the stories, rather than walking around on 2 legs & wearing clothes. ;-)
I am actually also a budding author - am working on a canine mystery now (featuring dogs as the main characters, not one of those with a human & dog duo) - and one of the reasons I was delighted to find this group is because everyone keeps telling me nobody (except young children!) wants to read stories with "talking animals" - ie. told from animal POV's - so I was really happy to discover that there are some of you who - though grown-up - still enjoy stories narrated by animals! I guess that means there's hope for my book yet! :-)
I always believed there were others like me who still enjoyed animal POV stories - and I'm really pleased to be proven right! Looking through the previous comments above made me smile coz I recognised so many of the book titles as favourites.
Anyway, looking forward to getting to know everybody...

Welcome! Whoever told you kids only liked animal books was wrong! You only need to check out the popularity of Spencer Quinn's Chet and Bernie series! I'm fifty and love these types if books as do several of my friends!! Keep writing what you believe in!!'nm

Hi Hsin-Yi, Welcome to our group. I made this group because I wasn't seeing many on Goodreads here that covered a wider range of animal books.
And, I'm one of those people who love to read stories from the animals POV.
Glad to see another person who goes and adopts from a rescue.
Enjoy the group and jump right in.

We have been getting more members lately and I know some of you haven't introduced yourself yet. Please feel free to jump in the conversations. We are a friendly group. We all love animals and that's a plus right there.
Welcome all!
Welcome all!

Hi, I'm Jim from the city of Bath in the UK. Brought up in Scotland, I spent early mornings walking a whole series of dogs, catching glimpses of wildlife - crazy hares, squabbling pheasants, runaway mink, etc. For about 20 years I made a living designing and making colourful wooden toys, which sold all over the world. Le Galerie des Jouets at the Louvre has one of my Noah's Arks, for instance. I also got involved in the early 90s writing and illustrating children's books, usually involving some sort of animals. Then I gave up the toys in 2000 to teach. I retired last year and have started writing again, with a fictional account of local badgers I see every week, when I'm on my way to see friends. It's called The Badgers of Beechen Cliff. As it's my first writing project for a very long time, I'm very grateful for any feedback that comes my way. I can take the critical stuff as well as the nice comments.

Welcome Jim. I would love to see Scotland someday. My gr.gr. grandmother came from Scotland. Sounds like a wonderful thing to do in the mornings and great views.

Good luck with your second round of your writing career Jim! Welcome to the group!

welcome!

That's nice!

My passion is for all wild animals, but especially for elephants. I think they are wonderful animals and I'm outraged at how poachers are killing them for their ivory. Great to join this group.
Paul
Hi Paul and welcome. I totally agree. I think elephants are wonderful animals and I hate to see any animal being poached just for ivory or the fur.

I have always shared my home with animals and now live with three rescue cats and a rescue dog. I prefer not to keep other "pets" because I'd rather see them in the wild (and I do a lot of hiking in the woods so I can! lol). I may not be able to keep up with your reading list completely, but I'm looking forward to the recommendations and learning about other great new authors and books! One book I'm looking very forward to reading is "The Urban Beastiary" by Lyanda Lynn Haupt. Anyone read her other book "Crow Planet"? The Beastiary book is brand new. :-)

Welcome, Tanya! I also have rescued dogs (down to one at the moment) and cats (2). I never heard of that book or that author; I'm always looking for good animal books!

Thanks, Jami, both for welcoming me and for rescuing dogs and cats. :-)

That is wonderful Kyleigh!! Keep working towards your goal of becoming a veterinarian!!!!
Welcome Tanya,
I haven't read either book you mentioned. I have two rescue dogs right now and have always gone to the shelters for my pets. It's best to save a life. My one dog has a lump right now on his shoulder and I have a vet appt. on Friday. He's 11 yrs. old.

I will. I am praying he is okay. The one good thing is it doesn't seem to bother him right now.

Best of luck with your dog -- hopefully just a cyst or something like that! I know old dogs do tend to get bumps and lumps just like we do. xoxo Keep us posted if you are okay with sharing. I'll be thinking positive thoughts your way!
