Lydgate sees Rosamond as being of negative character whereas she is stubbornly willful doing what she wants and showing him no respect. Lydgate allows Rosamond the power by seeming to accept it as his lot. Much of their financial woes stem from her spending on her trousseau and yet nobody in the book has told Rosamond to take responsibility, as I recall.
Temptations - Has Fred succumbed to gambling again? Lydgate falls into the trap of gambling, but is 'saved' by the appearance of Fred!
Bulstrode, whose fortune came of vice, has his past again catch him out with the return of Raffles. He learns that Raffles has spoken of 'matters' when Garth quits. In the past be paid Raffles to leave Middlemarch but this hasn't worked. When opportunity presents, he takes measures to see Raffles will not further divulge Bulstrode's past.
Like book VI this was much easier to read and follow that the earlier books. Eliot is using dialogue between the characters to tell the story rather than the earlier wordy narrative.
I am really enjoying the story now (from about half-way through book V). Looking forward to book VIII.
