So I won't lie to you folks this book panders to nerds more than any other book I've ever had the pleasure of reading but in the end Cline is able to make you really enjoy the smattering and random nods to nerd/80s/video game culture. I mean the man had Wil Wheaton do the narration of the audio book for goodness sakes.
The story revolves around Wade Watts, a slum dwelling young man in the year 2044 who has lived the vast majority of his life inside of a kind of virtual reality mmo called OASIS. The creator of OASIS has passed away and left an "Easter Egg" within OASIS which, if discovered, would turn over the entire company, financial holdings, and control of the OASIS to the individual discovering it.
Wade is one of a large community called "gunters" who make it their life's work to discover this easter egg. The story follows Wade upon his crazy journey in search of the mythical easter egg.
Mr. Cline injects a ton of pop culture and video game based aspects to his story which allows you to see the parallels between our current technology and culture e.g. WoW and its evolution into something like OASIS. There is so much 80s pop culture name dropping it's ridiculous. Sometimes it can seem a bit forced but in the end this turned out to be a great read which I devoured in just a few sittings. I would absolutely suggest reading this book if you have a nerdy bone in your body, 4.5 out of 5 Devo Energy Domes.
