This is the thread to tell me & Shera (please keep the discussion book & group focused and be constructive - if you want to rant or have any issues please send one of us a message so we can sort it out!)

- what you would like to see in the group
- what you like about the group
- Anything you don't like
- We have several potential plans for the group, would you be will to take part in a poll or survey to gauge interest?
- Anything else we should know?

A.O. Peart (aopeart) Welcome back, Jenny. I've been lurking, but rarely leaving comments. I will try to be better about that.

I would like to see more interaction with authors, giveaways, links to good book blogs etc.

A poll or survey is always a great idea. This way the members can vote on ideas that you already consider. Much easier for everyone :-)

★ gwiz ★ (ggwiz) | 55 comments I really enjoy this group of book lovers :-D

I love the way you have the challeges-yearly, monthly, and BOM. Might think about a yearly that is finishing the backlog of books and series that are sitting on the shelf. That is something I am working on.

It is helpful to have the BOM figured out ahead of time. I can check the way the poles are going. Which allows me to start requesting books at the library. Expecially those books that everyone wants (which can take weeks if not months before I see the book/s). It also helps let me set up which books I need to arrange with my other book clubs/challeges.

I have gotten to the point that I usually will read books from the library. Which means I usually have a problem getting any book that has been recently released. It takes anywhere up to 6 months to go through the library buying process. Plus, then there is the waiting line. I might not be able to comment on those until much later.

Victoria (vsquared) | 5 comments I would love to see the bookshelf categorized by themes: Vampires, werewolves, shifters, witches, faes, etc. I think this will give new and current members the ability to find books easier and faster. I can volunteer my services, If needed :)

message 7: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfpat) | 44 comments I don't know about anybody else, but I have really enjoyed the July Creatures challenge and the August Sun Challenge. You get to pick the books you already have and it also helps you explore things you would not normally pick. The monthly reading challenges that have the one featured book is not always available in my library and by the time I get it I am either too late to enjoy the group or I am too involved with the current series that I am reading to put it down for the challenge.
You know there is another idea. I am a series reader. I read from book one to the end (well the most current book available if the series is still going). We could have a Series Challenge. It is impossible for me to read book one and move to another series all together, unless the series really stinks. We could enjoy some of our favorite book series all over again like JR Ward BDB series; we could have a re-read challenge and enjoy the books with each other all over again. I know I am not the only one who likes to re-read favorites. That would be so much fun!

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) Change BOTM poll schedule slightly to poll among nominations like normal but then add a runoff poll among, for example, the top six votes.

And maybe pick a month (possibly December or January) that instead of nominations, the poll would consist of the books that came in second place on the polls each month. Just a "second chance" type of thing for the almost favorites.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Great ideas Deborah!

I have to agree I am a series reader! I spent 14 days reading DH series with very little sleep, bipolar here. That was 20 books in that time.

I can so relate to that Jessica. I have a tendency to read until I pass out till the entire series is finished. I did the same thing with DH... I think a series challenge would be intense for us avid readers and could be lots of fun!

Tohrutohno | 122 comments What about read 2 reviews (r2r)? You know where the author volunteers to give an x amount of free copies of their book out in return for reviews posted from the readers. I participate in some in a couple other groups and it seems like a real win/win for both authors and readers. I love the opportunity to read books from authors I might not have otherwise found and the authors love the attention it gives their books online.

" hi am new and i need help i'm looking for a book i read a few years ago its a romance. slavery has been abolished and a young (white) girl along with her uncle (i think) join a wagon party with some other people including whores travelling to someplace new to make a new life for themselves since they are facing hard times. the hero of the book has deserted the war and he is chosen to lead the wagon party . the first time the hero is introduced he gets in to a fight with a young man from the girl's life who wants her .he has wanted her for a long time and in one scene he is raping a young indian girl. the hero kills him in the end (i think).
SOME SCENES THAT I REMEMBER
the hero and the heroine make love in the back of the wagon but it was painful for her since she was a virgin so she kicks him out
THE GIRL IS KIDNAPPED NY THE YOUNG MAN IN THE NIGHT WHILE THEY WERE MAKING CAMP THE HERO GOES AFTER HER
THE MAKE LOVE IN AN OLD CABIN
also the heroine becomes pregnant and she is reunited with the hero in the end (i forgot y the stopped speaking)

ALSO I REMEMBER IN THE BEGINNING OF THE BOOK THE HERO IS REMEMBERING A TIME WHEN HE STARTED VISITING WHORES SHE SAYS TO HIM "YOU BEEN PULLING ON IT ALOT" lol

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments You know I think there's a group on goodreads dedicated to just that.

Ah, here it is:

What's the name of that book???

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Yep, welcome.

Yeah, they're a great group.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) How about a challenge for Urban Fantasy, and another for Paranormal Romance? It's a neat group feature that only a few of my groups are doing. I don't mean the listed ones where you keep track (although that can be part of it), but the group option where you set a mini goal at the top of the group and it tracks it for you from the shelf throughout the year.

I keep looking for the group challenges option here, and I'm not sure if they've officially rolled it out yet?

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Wait!! It's there in the options now! So excited!!! >_<

Chris Breedlove) (chrisstevenson) | 17 comments I'm desperate to find out how to market and promote my paranormal romance/thriller. It's my one and only self-published book and I'm having a terrible time getting it off the ground. Maybe the artwork is not up to snuff or the blurb is non enticing enough. It's called The War Gate.

Opinions?

message 27: by Mina (new)

Mina Khan (spicebites) | 139 comments This is a fun group, and I'm having fun exploring it. However one thread I noticed in another group and think would be nice here is a Bloggers & Author's Giveaway thread. Giveaways aren't just free books, but could be gift certificates, ereaders and more.

message 28: by MadameZelda (new)

MadameZelda I'm a newbie. I love seeing what people are reading now. I'd like to know when they're also finished reading the book and their thoughts, I.e., wow, junk, total bore. That helps me by deciding where to plunk my hard-earned dollars.
Just a suggestion. Perhaps you do that and i don't know where it is in Discussions. Thanks for listening.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Zelda, Check out the What are you reading threads, and the books you'd recommend threads. We've got a number of threads for members to state what books they like and are currently reading.

Mina, we're working on something like that for our group! It's one of the things we're "unvieling" for 2013.

message 31: by Robin (new)

Robin Morgan (robinleighmorgan) With two-thirds of February gone I finally decided to take a look at the sales ranking for my book and to my dismay what can be best described has being disheartening. With over 6,500 members I felt someone would be participating in the Whatever group read--I guess my assumption was terribly wrong as I've not received a single question regarding it. So if there is such a total lack of participation [and I've checked other books for any change in their sales ranking] then why are we bothering having them. Don't get me wrong I felt honored when someone nominated my book, and like everyone else I went and asked people to vote for it here. The concept is of a group read is wonderful, but I feel we as members should take a bigger interest in the activities of this group and participate more. Perhaps in my haste I might have overlooked a slight error or two in my book, but that should not take away from any enjoyment of reading it as a whole.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Robin Leigh wrote: "I went and asked people to vote for it here."

Were they active members in this group prior to you asking them to vote for your book?

The problem is no matter how many people you ask to vote for your book, it's the active group members here that need to take an interest in your book. If none of them voted for it, in all likelihood they aren't going to bother reading it.

Sorry, Robin. PA&N-PR&UF is not a promotional platform to up book sells. Most readers here want to read books that they already own or can get at their local library.

Speaking for myself, and perhaps some others, I love participating in the group reads for my various groups but I always get the books for said reads from my local library (either through its collection or inter-library loans/purchase requests).

Occasionally, after reading a book or series I will decide it's one I'd like to add to my collection of owned books, but then it just goes onto my "to buy" shelf until I can actually afford to buy it, which sadly might not be for some time.

Regarding your book, Robin Leigh, it did not go onto my to-read shelf mainly because it seems to be a YA book, and except for a few exceptions I tend to steer away from those, as YA stories just aren't to my current tastes. Sorry!

Shelly Arkon | 9 comments Is this where I can recommend a series I enjoy reading? It was suggested at another group to come here and give my recommendation. I figured, I'd ask first.

Thank you.

Personally, I prefer buying the book to help support the author. Since I am one, I understand the time and even the cost that goes into making one.
