J | 11 comments I will be sailing on the Queen Mary 2 this fall and I'd love to find some novels to get me in the mood. :) Does anyone have suggestions of novels set aboard (or involving) the QM2?

Tracey (stewartry) Hmmm... I don't know if anything I found is up your alley, but I did find:

Keith Wayne McCoy's The Travelers, a supernatural, time-travel mystery set aboard the Queen Mary luxury liner

The Vices by Lawrence Douglas: On a trip aboard the Queen Mary 2 with his mother, Oliver Vice, 41, disappears. Did he jump overboard, was it an accident, or was it murder?

The Transatlantic Lady Carisbrooke by Gary Paul Nicholson: the Carisbrooke household takes a hilarious trip to New York, on board the QM2, where we meet the enigmatic Mr Rutter, Mr Harris, who is only capable of saying one word, and Mr Villeneuve who simply cannot read enough books about Zinc.

About the QM2's sister ship:
The Explorer's Code by Kitty Pilgrim: "a fast-paced international thriller that's partially set on one of Cunard's newest ships, the three-year-old Queen Victoria."

There's also a website devoted to her history; there might be something there: http://www.queenmarystory.com/

Bon voyage! Fall's coming up fast.

Lucky you! I was born at the wrong time - I would love to have been born when people took ships rather than planes.

Have a great time!

Thanks for trying! I appreciate it!

I’ll give them a look. Thanks!

Luck..."

Thanks! I feel the same way! :)

FYI - I was surprised how affordable the transatlantic crossing on QM2 was ... We bought the cheapest tickets currently available, which were about $1,000pp. I’ve seen sales at other times that drop the price down to about $700pp. That’s about on par with an airplane ticket. Of course, it’s only one-way, so you have to book another cruise or fly home. Still, for an anglophile like me, it’s the trip of a lifetime.

Lynnm J - I'm going to England next summer, and looked into Cunard - about the same price as the QM2 (which I didn't even think of, but I will now look into that as well).

It is more expensive than air because the $1,000 is as you said, only one way, but I would really love to do it. I'm not afraid of flying, but I don't like flying at all, especially with all the security stuff now.

And it would be so cool to go to England via a cruise ship. :-)

oh my goodness, now I feel old (BIGGRIN) the first 3 times I crossed the Atlantic were by ocean liner - all Cunard if I recall - but the first two I was too young to remember:) The third was when we came to Canada to stay and I was nine. I have no idea what the trip would be like now but it was great fun for a child all those years ago.

Have a wonderful trip!

Elizabeth | 1 comments Conrad Allen wrote a series of books with the theme of murder on an ocean liner. They include Murder on the Lusitania, Murder on the Oceanic, Murder on the Mauritania. I have these on a wish list but have not read any of them as yet so I cannot vouch for them.

J | 11 comments I’ll try to track them down - thanks!

I am so annoyed! I would love to read this book -- it sounds wonderful! But it's only available on Kindle, & I don't have one and probably never will. I realize these things are the wave of the future and all, but many of us readers don't have them yet. I wish books would come in a physical format as well as an electronic one. At least until there are absolutely no more printing facilities. Sort of like 8 track tapes ...

I would love to sail to England rather than fly! I always wanted to take the Lurline to Hawaii, but of course she was decommissioned before I got the chance. Le sigh.

forgive me for not 'replying' properly to the person whom I was quoting :) I did sail across but I was only 9 ... sorry for the confusion :)

Hilary (A Wytch's Book Review) (knyttwytch) I also don't have a kindle BUT I do have the kindle "app" on my computer for when books are only available in e-form, would that be any use to you?

message 16: by Helen (new)

Helen | 98 comments Adobe also have a software called Digital Editions which I have used to read to read Kobo downloads - I have not tried it with Kindle though ...
