Jonathan | 185 comments It's just looking at some of what the executive producer of the game said about it and where that marketing and hype could hurt the game a lot before it's even released. At least one article to come on the whole victimization and trauma aspect on the storytelling.

Rob (quintessential_defenestration) | 1035 comments Nice article. It's surprising that during this whole kerfuffle no one else actually stopped and went "hey, video games are supposed to be immersive....so why are they calling attention to the separation between character and player?"

I do disagree with you that the only time this distance should be heightened/made more explicit is for 4th wall shenanigans; supposedly Spec Ops focused on distancing the player from the character during the second half of the narrative to great effect.

Jonathan | 185 comments Thanks for the critique. Yeah I was actually surprised that no one really started off with the "games are naturally immersive and they're bragging about it not be immersive" argument before complaining about the switching from one form of female objectification to another form of female objectification.

Lena Horn (lenahorn) Hah! I was so annoyed when I heard them say that "protecting Lara" comment.

I'm a girl gamer, and I've been a Tomb Raider fan since the beginning. Lara Croft is not a woman to be protected, even if this is an origin story/before she's all kick butt awesome.

They should have called it immersive, they should have called it as it is: a young woman finding the will to fight! Ok, maybe with better wording...

I want to play her so I can go kick butt, no matter if she gets kicked to the ground at the beginning :) Lara is an idol to me, not a woman to protect. Did they not think about us girl gamers?

Jonathan | 185 comments Did they think about the girl gamers? Yes, with a big no. Hell, they aren't even thinking that much about the male gamers either by labeling the entire game an escort mission rather than an immersive story.
