Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments To clarify there are some rules but they are bendable!

I'll post them here and can discuss them if necessary

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Not so much rules really as the ideal way we wish it to work.

1. Helps writers to improve their writing in a fun way, open to both authors and non-authors, by means of contests.

2. Tasks for entries should be short so as to not distract authors away from their manuscripts. Suggest 150 words as maximum, and little to no research needed. Suggest 2 or so contests per month.

3. Diversity of task and prompt: Tasks could be biographical, humour, poems, prose, dialogue, transitions, etc. Prompts could be pictures, music, videos, poems, words, etc.

4. Entries should be anonymous (except to the one collecting them) and voted on by poll. Not sure if possible, but it'd be nice if only the top 3 entries are visible. This was to avoid embarrassment of coming last, but I guess if they are anonymous then no one will know unless the entrant divulges it.

5. Contests should be launched on Wednesdays as they were a spin-off of the original idea on the Writers' Cafe thread, and it helps to have a set day people can remember ("Writers' Wednesday")

6. Incentive to win - could vary, but being tweeted by fellow participants at a minimum.

7. Ultimately helps the forum grow, too.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments That sounds fine jud. However, it looks like these are all in the archive now, including this thread. Simon's been housekeeping again. I prefer it with his dirty socks and empty coffee cups left around!

message 4: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Oops! I'll repost somewhere else, thanks for letting me know!

message 5: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Thought it might be a good idea to move this somewhere visible.

I have the theme for the next contest which will start on the first Wednesday of September.

message 6: by Ken (new)

Ken Magee | 105 comments Hey Jud, What about putting everything about the Writing Contest under the main thread heading "Writing Contests"? Then we'd all know where to go for rules, prompts, entries & the poll.

message 7: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Apparently the Writing contest group has been archived. I posted this there the first time round

message 8: by Ken (last edited Aug 17, 2012 03:52AM) (new)

Ken Magee | 105 comments Confusing... I can still see the "Writing Contests" heading... the most recent topic in it relates to "Writing Contest #4".

I think we need to find a way to group everything... maybe Simon could help?

message 9: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Yea I think I need a moderator

message 10: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments i think Simon did a lazy sweep of everything forgetting about the rules!

message 11: by Patti (baconater) (last edited Aug 17, 2012 04:18AM) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Okay, I'm here.

What would you like lovely?

message 12: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I don't know

*sniff*

Is the Writing contest section in the archive? If so can we get it back? It has been mentioned to me by a few people that they could spot it better there.

message 13: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments this thread is in the Author Zone - surely it'll be better pinned in the writing contest folder?

message 14: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Yes I know but I was told that was archived that is why I put it in the author section where I have been putting all the previous contest. I put it in the writing contest at first and Ignite told me it was archived.

I haven't looked at the group page yet myself cause I just use the unread link.

p.s. the next person to tell me that this should go in the writing contest section will owe me a HUGE bar of chocolate or preferably lots of peanut butter kit kat chunky's

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments i was talking to patti

message 16: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments D'Oh!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Right. The writing contest threads weren't archived. The section was shifted way down the page.

Not by me. You can thank Simon for that one. :)

I've moved it up the page and stuck this thread in the section as well.

Let me know if you'd like to try something else.

Pat () | -245 comments Where has Contest #5 gone? Can we have them all together in one place please?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Hiya Pat!

Where have you been? Have missed you!

Here it is. I've shifted it to where it belongs as well.

message 24: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Oops I forgot about this over my holidays. Time to get it up and seen again though.

The next writing contest will start next Wednesday! I have the theme from our last winners so get your fingers ready for some typing/writing. We'll go for 2 weeks to write the entry and then a week to vote with a week off to think of the next theme. If anyone has any major objections to this please let me know.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I'll get it started tomorrow :o)

message 28: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaeldiack) | 180 comments I did send one to Jud a few days ago. I hope it was good enough, will look forward to the response or think of a new one tonight if everyone hates it.

message 29: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I say it was fine and that all that matters Michael, everyone else can lump it.

;o)

message 30: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaeldiack) | 180 comments lol, good stuff then. Thanks for setting it up Jud.

message 31: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Hey Jud, tomorrow is today!

message 35: by Ken (new)

"Where? *runs off*"

message 37: by Bill (new)

Bill (s0litaire) | 109 comments Guess February is a rest month for the writing comp ^_~
He's me all revved up to write out another 200 or so words!

message 38: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (Spiderg1rl) (spiderg1rl) | 734 comments I sent the theme in before it was due but I never heard back from it, I can always send another through if its either been done before or wrong.

message 39: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments No it was my fault, I just completely forgot this month so then I called a rest month, cause I can.

I'll start the next one in 2 weeks (if I remember)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments We completely appreciate all the time and effort you put into the contests and you can call a rest month whenever you wish, lovely!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Sorry Thomas, I meant to hit reply to your post and hit delete by mistake.

Please feel free to repost, as I'd quite like to disagree with what you wrote. :)

message 42: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (Spiderg1rl) (spiderg1rl) | 734 comments No problem Jud, I worried I had given either a rubbish topic or that it had been used before. February is a short month anyway so no doubt people will appreciate the time to write up their entries or vote on their favourite :D

message 43: by Jud (last edited Feb 20, 2014 01:34AM) (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments No, I just have a memory of a sieve.

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Thanks, Jud, for continuing this. Much appreciated! :)

message 45: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Hey! where've you been?
I've written a book since I last saw you (shameful plug!) :)

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments You did? I've been going through a reading rather than a writing phase ;)

No spamming in the rules thread, isn't that one of the rules ;~)

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Too right ;)

message 49: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments No rulers in the spam thread either! Discipline! That's the word! That's what I haven't got!
