Rick Riordan wrote the original Percy Jackson series (whose first book was featured on post 549) for his son. Percy has ADHD and it proves an asset in this book.

My favorite Rick Riordan series is the Kane Chronicles about Carter Kane, a young African American youth whose father is an Egyptologist. My favorite character in that series is Bastet. I especially like how she interacts with her followers (our four-legged feline friends) and protects the human children. The first book is The Red Pyramid. I am definitely looking forward to The Sword of Summer (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, Book 1) that was recently released.

Our tree is just decorated with stuffed animals and lights. My husband likes theme trees and we found a use for all those stuffed animals left over from children's childhood.

HYR Paddington Bear by Michael Bond Paddington Bear by Michael Bond , a famous book about a stuffed animal come to life? Have you had a chance to see the movie?

message 552: by Julia (new)

Julia | 11782 comments I assume so, both as a child and as a book I read to my daughter, but she's 30, so I probably read it to her 25 years ago. I haven't seen the movie yet.

I was just hearing about a bear that we thought was fictional, but actually a Canadian soldier brought it to England, he bought the bear in a train station, during World War 1. He named it Saskatoon Winnie and it wound up in an English zoo, as Paddington or was it Pooh? Finding Winnie: The Story of the Real Bear Who Inspired Winnie-the-Pooh by Lindsay Mattick Finding Winnie The Story of the Real Bear Who Inspired Winnie-the-Pooh by Lindsay Mattick . HYR it?

Thanks for the recommendation. I didn't know that story. It seems like there are several books about the real Winnie-the-Pooh including The Real Winnie: A One-of-a-Kind Bear by Val Shushkewich, published in 2005. I hope to track down a copy. Speaking of Winnie . . .

HYR Winnie-the-Pooh (Winnie, Book 1) by A.A. Milne Winnie-the-Pooh (Winnie-the-Pooh, #1) by A.A. Milne ? When my children were little we loved the Winnie-the-Pooh stories.

Yes, I've read Winnie-the-Pooh several times.

Have you read any of the InCryptid novels, Discount Armageddon (InCryptid, Book 1) Discount Armageddon (InCryptid, #1) by Seanan McGuire

or the InCryptid short stories by Seanan McGuire? I enjoy reading about the adventures of Jonathan Healy and Francis Brown set in the early 1900's.

message 558: by Julia (new)

Julia | 11782 comments No, though I really liked the first three or so of Seanan McGuire's October Daye Rosemary and Rue novels, but I haven't yet picked up InCryptid series that begins with Discount Armageddon. I plan on it, sometime. And since I like historical paranormal novels especially, it's odder still. Someday!

HYR The Scarlet Pimpernel by Emmuska Orczy The Scarlet Pimpernel (The Scarlet Pimpernel, #1) by Emmuska Orczy ?

Set during the French Revolution (I'm a big Francophile), it was my favorite required reading book in high school. The Secret History of the Pink Carnation has quite a few plot similarities/references to it. These similarities are what caused me to pick it up; otherwise, I wouldn't have because romances aren't typically my thing, either. There's a lot of time period shifting/travel, so there's a bit of fantasy to it as well, which I like.

Kathleen Burket (kathleengigicompany) | 20125 comments Mod
Love The Scarlet Pimpernel. Have you seen any of the many movie versions? Do you have a favorite?

On the "In Death" series: Nora Roberts has hooked me into Eve and Roark's life story (after 42 books and numerous short stories it can't be called anything else but their life story). Roberts is getting older and my big concern is that one day she suddenly won't be here anymore. I hope there is a final book in draft, or completed, on file with her agent or publisher that resolves all the loose ends and we see an elderly Eve and Roark, contented and surrounded by children and grandchildren.

HYR The Duke and I* (Bridgertons, Book 1) by Julia Quinn?

*Both Best Regency and Best Romance series that I have ever read!

message 587: by Katharine (new)

Katharine | 943 comments I've seen a few of the movie versions, but my favorite so far is the version with Leslie Howard.

I feel the same way about Nora Roberts. I want to gobble up every book in the series, but I am trying to discipline myself to take it slow so I have an In Death to read until I die!

HNR The Duke and I. I will have to check it out.

HYR What Angels Fear by C.S. Harris What Angels Fear (Sebastian St. Cyr, #1) by C.S. Harris ? It's another of my go-to historical series.

No, I HNR either The Duke and I or What Angels Fear. They both look good, thanks. I appreciate suggestions for good romance novels.
