Anna You ought to change the title of this discussion because it is a MAJOR spoiler for those people who have yet to read the book.

message 53: by Dana (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dana I think that what Mason did was sweet! he knew he could have died, but he sent any ways.... he died out of love, i guess he didn't have to, but it plays out better that way. how else would Rose have known about what happened to Dimitri and stuff... well is Richelle did a spin off where mason didn't die, and things ended differently then we would know what would have happened, but.... oh well....

~17

Sandra I thought it was a true tragedy :(
Mason's death still haunts Eddie in the spin-off series Bloodlines... *sigh*
I know it was to form Eddie and esp. Rose, but I still think it was kind of brutal for him to just die that way. I mean Rose just should have told him NO, expect the concequences and move on, like she should have done with a lot of things ;)

Then Mason would be alive and might have played a role in Bloodlines as well. I would have liked that :)

Sadie Scott Ahhhhh i loved him so much! i cried a lot
R.I.P Mason we love you :) <333333

Kaketin Who I was sad. But it was either kill mason off or Dimitri because..... I dont know

Sandra If Dimitri had died...
VA would have been a lot different ;)
Adrian would have had a real shot, Rose would have to do the RIGHT thing by telling Mason it would never have worked. Eddy would probably have been a royal guardian too, and never lost that easy loving way he has always had. And most of all, they'd all be best friends still...

Come to think about it....
Now I wish Dimitri had died lol

Sandra Well, Mason's death did cause Rose to want to be better and protect every one she loved... But I'd have to say, it had a lot more effect on Eddy then on Rose. Rose was already top of her class - so there was no real room for improvement. Eddy on the other hand, felt like he owed it to Mason to protect Rose. He truely thought They'd hook up and Rose never told Eddy otherwise... :(

Hannah I liked Mason..but if he didn't die Rose wouldn't have become the person she is today.

*TreySongzWife* well thats right but he was what made rose so friece dont you agree?

Celeste Because Nice guys always finish last. Even in the vampire world.

*TreySongzWife* well thats true he would have made a good garduine

Heather Stokes When he dies it was so sudden! I had to re read over it a few times and my jaw actaully dropped and i kind of just stared at the book. But in a way it had to happen because it added to Rose's character and influenced how her attitude to gaurding others developed and he friendship with Eddie, which ofcourse then leads off into when they goes and break into places and he's ALWAYS there to help her, in loyalty to Manson.

Cytheria Brown BiancaL wrote: "Seriously cried when Mason died! :'O They way Rose was in so much grief that she was still trying to fight the guardians off when they came in too help! Don't know why he had to die. Guess it might..."

I cried to sooo hard! He was so amazing and she just.. killed him.

Abbigail i was practically crying!

Kat Andrade When I read the scene when mason died and afterwords I was like crying and having a mini fight with my kindle. Serously?!?!?!

Khione She killed him off because she needed to build Rose's character, to show how much she cared and bring out her protective nature. She also needed her to face Strigoi and kill them for the first time. But it was very sad to see Mason to go. I bet we all are going to cry when it's on the big screen.

Aparna may be mason died because The auther wana show his true affection for Rose and also to gie strong motive to Rore for strogoi kill.and due to Masons death she became vulnerable to Demitri and he did comfort her.. and their love story came back to track..!!! just my theory.. :-)

Khione It's a good theory, everybody here has good theories! But the only way, we could find out is to ask the talented author herself.

Courtney Lee Bettina wrote: "Agree with lot of the other posts.
Mason meant a lot to Rose, even though she didn't see him as a boyfriend, she did love him and care for him. His death is a turning point in the story. Rose chan..."

Also if he didn't die, Rose wouldn't have sxperienced seeing him as a ghost. And I agree, it was a turning point in the story and Rose changed because of that. Also there were other characters that were affected by his death. Eddie lost his best friend and as a result of that, he became a lot more responsible and serious about becoming a guardian and protecting others and that carries out through the rest of the series and into bloodlines. I hated to see mason die but if he hadn't these changes and growth in the other characters wouldnt have happened. It also brought something out of Dimitri when he saw Rose next to mason when the guardians found them and we see this in Shadow-Kissed he isnt trying to push Rose away as much

Anyway I hate that Mason had to die (who wouldnt) but I understand that certain things wouldnt have happened in the rest of the books if he had lived

Khione True, spoken like a journalist who's writing a review of VA Frostbite.

Aparna Courtney wrote: "Bettina wrote: "Agree with lot of the other posts.

i agree.. this is also one of fhe reason.. :-)

Aparna Amber the vamplover! wrote: "It's a good theory, everybody here has good theories! But the only way, we could find out is to ask the talented author herself."

yes u are right .. only way is to ask the auther.. hv u tried to ask she is goodread auther.. y dont you give it a try.. :-) :-)

Khione Okay, I will, hopefully she'll answer. (Fingers crossed.)

Danielle I have no idea why he did die, but when he did i actually got quite teary eyed. And i think it was since he came in to try and protect Rose that it was his own stubborness and breavery that got him killed

Whitney It was in his character. He rushed into the situation without thinking. He let his feelings cloud his judgement, although it ultimately saved Rose's life. She learned how to cope with loss and guilt afterward; so there was a silver lining.

Kerry Fleming I Think Mason died too early but I think thats part of what makes the book so great and dramatic :), Its so sad though... especially in Bloodlines when Eddie sees Micah :( :( xxxxxx

JJ Well like others have stated, he died for plot development. In later books you find out how his death triggered something in Rose and not just because she was close to the guy. Though that definitely helped the confusion. It also made all those who were there realize how powerless and childish they were(Rose, Eddie, Mia, and Christian). His death was the consequence of them thinking they could take on the world and ignored protocol which ironically touched into something Rose had criticized her mom for earlier in the book. Also, as the reader, you probably thought his death was unnecessary, I mean you had three trainee-guardians and two magic using vampires and they didn't think of using that to their advantage? Or even take blood from their human captors when they incapacitated them? This all ties to the bigger issue of the morals engraved in their minds that "they come first", magic should not be used offensively, and they should only feed from willing humans (aka feeders). After this experience the survivors put their act together in their own way. All in all, his death was not in vain.

Cynthia I think too many people would've hoped for a romance when Adrian and Dimitri were her future lovers/crushes. Maybe it was also a way for the author to focus on Rose battling on her own or alongside her men. That's the way I interpreted at least. Also, if Mason didn't die, Rose would've died and the story would've been over.

I freaking sobbed, not because of Mason, but because of the way it broke Rose in that moment and then Dmitri came...and...he...just....i can't:(

I sooooooo agree.

Magdala i thnk someone had to die, so the authors were prbably thnking tht they should pick a friend that is closes to rose which fit in perfectly, which also was broght up by the next book 2. i thnk it was a smart move, n we all felt the emotion that the author wanted us to feel.

Aphrodite Vez Oh my... Mason's death was pure torture!

that scene gets me everytime. that was the moment when i said to myself what an outstanding author RM is. I cried and i couldn't believe it. I felt that i was part of it. It was so sad and moving...
