Tita Thanks for The Graveyard Book videos! I managed to view some chapters (the rest failed to load completely). That's an amusing new experience in 'reading' your stories! Hope that book comes to Indonesia soon...

message 83: by Shadi

Shadi Mirza You haven't written a bad book yet - that's more than I can say for some of my other favorite authors (is it too soon to mention Robert Jordan?).

message 82: by Ken-ichi (last edited Oct 19, 2008 08:33PM)

Ken-ichi Just heard your All Things Considered interview, and was intrigued to hear you keep bees. I would love to read your thoughts on the practice, and will look for it in your writing!

message 81: by Gianti

Gianti I love stardust.. so nice, romantic and the idea of a star being a woman is amazing..

message 80: by Dan (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:40AM)

Dan Schwent The Graveyard Book was something I'd been looking forward to since reading about it in your blog over a year ago. Completely worth the wait. There's plenty of room for The Second Graveyard Book on my bookshelf...

message 79: by Neil (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:40AM)

Neil I've got 1558 friends on Goodreads... not quite sure how that happened, but it's nice to see you all. Mostly I just feel like I should update what I've been reading.

Thank you all for the nice comments.

Lucas: "The Man Who Was Thursday (A Nightmare)" is a book that I love because it sets out the themes of most twentieth century spy fiction: that the bad guys are the good guys in different hats and dark rooms, for example. It's not the most accessible of Chesterton's books -- I'd recommend his Father Brown stories to anyone who enjoys detective stories. But it is a nightmare, too, and enjoys the power of dream fiction.

If anyone would like to watch or listen to my new book, The Graveyard Book, for nothing, the link to the tour (at which I read a chapter in each location) is http://www.mousecircus.com/videotour.... [image error]

message 78: by Andrea

Andrea Kulman Hi & thank you for being a friend on Good Reads!

Annelien I discovered your work earlier this summer (thanks to Miss Palmer, recently missing, possibly deceased...) and I have since been devouring your work. I borrowed about 4 in one go at the local Belgian library! You should congratulate your Dutch translator, he or she did an excellent job.

My favourite so far is Smoke&Mirrors, which I purchased this weekend along with Fragile Things.

I am about to start on Anansi Boys and am trying to find the Sandman-series.

Keep up the fantastic work!

message 76: by Krista

Krista I've recently finished reading Coraline and I have to say that I loved it. It was so creative and creepy; in some ways it reminded me of Alice In Wonderland. That was the first book I've read by you, but I plan to read all of your books.
-- Krista.

message 75: by Chris

Chris Congratulations on making #1 on the NY Times Children's Books List, Neil. Hopefully they update their page today so I can send the link to all my friends. I might just have to do a happy dance as well :)

Thanks so very much for having the courage to create in such a wide variety of media, writing for such widely disparate audiences, and for the many magical journeys.

Cheers,
Chris

message 74: by Lucas

Lucas Mendes Hi there,

Because of a mention in Sandman, a friend and I got to read "The Man Who Was Thursday".

However, after reading the book (and looking it up in wikipedia and many other sites) I confess I still don't quite get it =P

Usually, I go to the person that recommended me the book when something like this happens (it tends to happen with some frequency) But this time, my friend had recommended the book to me in hope I'd be able to explain it to him.

So, I asked him "ok, who recommended it to you ?", and here we are =P

Would you mind telling me a bit about what you got from the book ? I read somewhere that it has something to do with the noah ark, but I got no idea of what they might have in common.

thanks !

(btw, as if you hadn't had enough of this, sandman rocks! I don't write, but I think I learned a lot about writing from it)

Zarinthia Hey Neil, thanks for adding me here. It's a privilege and I'm abit starstruck now *grin* Just finished Graveyard Book last week. Loved it. Thanks for the many wonderful stories :)

message 72: by Jeanne (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:40AM)

Jeanne Ta for the friending, love! I might drive in to SF to get The Graveyard Book this Sunday.

message 71: by P.M.

P.M. Allowing your books American Gods and now Neverwhere as a free read was pure genius. As an author, I was inspired to do that a while back. You're right, it does pay back more than I would have thought. Thanks for being a great storyteller and really nice guy. Many storytellers tend to be reclusive. Good for you.

message 70: by Teri

Teri Always a highlight to listen to and see you at the National Book Fair. Thank you for be so committed to your fans; staying to sign for so many of us. We all appreciate it so much! It was hard to pick, but Stardust is a great story, i love how it comes full circle; so that what I chose for signing, thank you again! It's great to see you here on Goodreads too! From a Fan.

message 69: by Kajsa (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:40AM)

Kajsa Thank you so much for taking the time to sign my book and going out of your way to stay and sign something for everyone. It is truly appreciated. The Graveyard Book sold out before I could buy a copy, but I will definitely be picking it up on Tuesday. It was lovely to hear you read a chapter aloud. I hope your finger feels better soon!

Rachel Okay, the comment that referenced King's Misery made me crack up. :)

Neil - Keep up the awesome work! I've only read 'Neverwhere' so far, but I truly enjoyed it and can't wait to read more of your novels. Best of luck with all of your future stories.

PS. In my Tolkien class, my professor recommended your work very highly to everyone! Just thought I'd share.

Christopher Feyrer Hi Neil. I gave you a Naked Dancing Llama T-shirt once, and you kindly accepted it. I wonder if it's in a trashcan now, as I have a feeling you were merely humoring me. In the mean time, I continue to be a great fan of yours and am enjoying a look at your bookshelf.

Peace,

Chris

P.S. Consider this another vote for you to write an episode of Doctor Who. :)

Mike The Pirate Wow, I can't believe you actually added me, that was very awesome of you. Or is it that you just add anyone who asks? There are a lot of creepy fans out their who would enjoy stalking their favorite authors, like in King's Misery! And I would be disappointed if one of them got to you before you finished your next project...by the way, I'm not one of those crazy fans...
But I think it goes without saying that I greatly enjoy your books, and I really wanted to tell you that you rock pretty hard. I've gotten through many a boring class by surreptitiously reading your novels behind my textbooks. Actually I'm sitting in one right now, but I don't have a book.
But thank you for the add and I can't wait to read Graveyard.
The End.

message 65: by Amanda

Amanda Thank you for the add! I first fell in love with your writing in 2004 when a friend gave me a copy of Neverwhere the day before I was to move (temporarily) to London. I haven't been able to get enough since, and, as a DC metro resident, am very much looking forward to seeing you this weekend! Thank you for your work!

Yara Thanks so much for the friend add.
American Gods is one of my absolute favorite books, and I've turned many friends on to it. Sandman is incredible. My thirst for that series insatiable.

Thanks again!

message 55: by Ceci (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:40AM)

Ceci Thank you so much, Neil, for letting us know about the free Neverwhere download. I just did exactly that, and will let my friends know too. You're simply the best author to walk this earth. I can't wait to get my paws on The Graveyard Book, and how fabulous to know that there is also a new Batman comic in the works... So very magical.

I'm currently re-reading Good Omens, and Sandman, too, and enjoying them throughly. You're such a gifted author, and I'm happy to say I have a few more of your books stacked up here, just waiting to be read as the nights get ever darker here up north, Finland. Hope you have a very wonderful autumn, Neil!

anntok Hi Neil! Thanks for the add btw, I'm wondering, would you know when the Graveyard Book will be released in the Philippines? Also, will you be here for the
The 3rd Philippine Graphic Fiction Awards ? Thanks!

message 46: by Nancy

Nancy

hiilovemarkhoppus Hi Neil...

I just wanted to say you're a great author, and Stardust is my favorite book ever.
Do you ever think you're going to make the first book "wall"? I read some of it in the back of Stardust, and I was hooked!

Thanks for the add!

Dorian

message 44: by Neil

Neil I've just read the comments.. thank you all, so much.

And you know about the free Neverwhere for 30 days, don't you?

for details.

Somesuchlike Thank you so much for friending me back!

message 42: by Angela

Angela de Guerre Thank you for friending me back.

Reading books recommended by a fav author has to be a great way of finding new books to love :)

message 41: by Julie

Julie Thanks for adding me as a friend, Neil. Even though i first heard about Sandman during the 1990s, i only started reading it in March this year (2008). (professional procrastinator). I have missed out on SO MUCH. Wow, can't wait to read more. Thankyou for writing such an interesting and delicious character!

I then went crazy finding books and stuff by "Neil Gaiman" and I really love "Mirrormask". Is that available as a text somewhere, or just on dvd. It's bloody fantastic. I now have "the wolves in the walls" "Preludes and Nocturnes" "The Witch's Headstone" in Dann & Dozois' Dark Alchemy, "Stardust" and "Coraline." Don't know where to start first. Happy as a pig in (slops)!

:) Julie

message 40: by Tony

Tony Thank you for the friendship.
I've been a fan since the first issue of Sandman hit the comic shelf.
Now my son is reading "Interworld," so you have another fan.

message 39: by Neil

Neil NOt sure if this is the right place to put this, but I just accidentally deleted two people I meant to accept as friends -- so if you've sent me a friend application and haven't heard anything back, please send it again...

Neil (in Turpan today)

message 38: by Lisa

Lisa Hendrix I write.

Someday, I hope to write as well as you--in my own voice of course, but with the same kind of strength and poetry and healthy irreverence.

Thanks for being an inspiration.

message 37: by César

César Thanks for adding me!

American Gods and Sandman are in my all time favourites (I'm finishing Kindly Ones)

message 36: by Sean

Sean Thanks for the add Neil! Ever speak to Sam Keith anymore? You two should get together and do another project. :D

message 35: by Giacomo

Giacomo Thanks for the add!
"Death: the high cost of living" is one of the best things I've ever read. If you could have a penny for every minute of happiness given to people, you'd be richer than Bill Gates.
