Caro Bégin They say everyone's got a book in them... That may be true, but it takes a lot of self-discipline to put one's thoughts down on paper, then a lot of courage to go through it and delete, rewrite, and edit one's way through the first draft. And then repeat the process... until it's ready for publication. But if you WANT to do it, there's never been a better time than now. Get your bum in a chair and work at it every day. Keep reading books in your genre and pick up a few 'writing' books that speak to you. Don't worry about following someone else's system. Learn what others are doing, then create your own system. Write. Write. Write.
Caro Bégin The inspiration and ideas come easy. The motivation and self-discipline, not so much. Writing is like committing to a long-term goal for me. Once I've selected an idea (i.e., when my brain can't think of anything else but the 'what-if' questions related to that specific idea), then I visualize getting to the finish line and having written the book. This motivates me to get my butt in the chair (most days) and type some words.
Caro Bégin Being able to lie in the open ;)
Caro Bégin Poorly. In one word: procrastination.
I procrastinate by watching videos on how to overcome procrastination, how to achieve your goals, etc. Pretty lame, I know.
I'd say that my bouts of "writer's block" are caused by a lack of motivation (and not a lack of inspiration). Some days I just feel like looking out the window instead of writing, or I get stressed out by the paid work I have to get done for clients. My current solution is to set myself a set time and word count objective (i.e., 1,500 words or 2 hours, whichever comes first).
Caro Bégin I'm currently writing a prequel to Twisting Fate. It will be a novella that I intend on giving away for free to get readers interested in Kate Murphy and her career at the Boston Police Department (in Twisting Fate and upcoming sequel). The prequel is more of a police drama, fairly dark, but it explains how Kate became the person she is at the beginning of Twisting Fate.
