If you write, YOU ARE a writer. However, if you aspire to be published, my main advice to you is that it will take hard work and a lot of persistence. You have to read new books in your genre to keep up to date with what others are writing and where your book fits in. You have to write and revise, write and revise, so many times at some point you will inevitably hate your book. There are incredible highs that come along with writing—a book is accepted, a shining review, the feeling of holding your book in your hands, meeting a fan at a book signing. However, there are lows to this career as well, many times when you wonder if you don't have what it takes. It can come before you're published, after you've published your first book or your twentieth. The drive and determination of writing a book has a roller-coaster of highs and lows. Don't give up. Write the best book you can, and then write another. Do this because you love writing, put in the hard work, and eventually you will find yourself where you want to be.

I love the ability to immerse myself in books. Whether it is research about a historical period or market research about what books are getting great acclaim—or even immersing myself in my own book as I write, the ability to give literature the devotion it deserves is definitely one of the perks of being a writer. (Along with many others!)

As a part of my writing (both day job and personal), I set a daily quota of words to write. There is a lot of pressure to write, but creativity ebbs and flows. Whenever I get stuck, I find the best thing to do is walk away. Read a book, go for a jog. Do something that gives me a mental and physical break from writing. Then, after I'm recharged, I try again.

I'm currently editing up a historical mystery novel set in 1840s Newcastle-Upon-Tyne! It has a female amateur sleuth protagonist with a past she would prefer to keep secret and a corpse on her operating table that might expose everything. I'm hoping to release it in late 2022 if my health allows! (Edited January 2022)
