Sorry, I didn't realize this question was here until I came to post the release of book 3. So... today? Very helpful, I know.
The number of books is a complicated question. I had a very firm plan for a five book series, and then book 2 started getting really long, so I split it and moved about 1/3 of it to 3. And then when I was writing 3, I realized it would be at least twice as long as 2, so I split that one. And then threw up my hands and said "WHATEVER!"
I have an outline of the entire story arc, and I'm going to keep going until I hit all the pieces I feel are necessary, and can be crafted together into a book. Right now, I'm estimating six books plus a spin-off, plus some short stories/novellas following up on various people or events. That's today's plan.
