Deborah Clark Vance The story is of a woman coordinating her true inner self with the way the world sees her. I wondered about the spiritual and psychological growth of a girl who endures a single abusive encounter (outside the home) and basically processes it alone.
Deborah Clark Vance I find inspiration in many ways, from various incidents, experiences, encounters, questions, feelings. Some may end up only as a phrase, description or conversation while others may become full-fledged motivated characters or story lines.
Deborah Clark Vance There are so many different kinds of writers and ways of writing I hesitate to give a one-size-fits-all statement except "persist!" However, I'd like to add that think deeply about what unique truth you have to share, figure out who you want to share it with and express it as well as you can for your reader.
Deborah Clark Vance I'm working on something quite different but it's so early in the process there's no telling where it'll end up.
Deborah Clark Vance I've read two newly published titles by Goodreads authors: "Alina: A Song for the Telling" by Malve Von Hassell a wonderful YA historical fiction that places women in medieval history, bringing alive the 12th century; Spirit Quest 1969 by Ronald Schultz, an amazing memoir; you all know about "The Goldfinch" by Donna Tartt -- mixed feelings about that. I'm working on "We Are Not Ourselves" by Matthew Thomas.
Deborah Clark Vance Our thinking can be images and random thoughts, but writing helps organize and clarify it so we can share anything we need or want to communicate. And when we take the time to flesh out those thoughts with the precise words and phrases, we're able to connect with our own inner worlds and portray them to others. Though the act of writing itself is solitary, we're always hoping for a communal experience with readers.
Deborah Clark Vance For me, I write about what I need to say and am always trying to find the best way to say i which I do best by meditating. I like to take a walk among the trees, in the woods or a park, away from traffic and people and clear my mind. Usually ideas come to me and sometimes entire sentences, so I always carry a notepad and pen.
