Jeffrey D. Keeten I go read a book by an author I really enjoy, or go for a walk, or stretch out for a quick nap. Usually all I have to do is relax and give my mind time to churn through or past whatever is hanging up the words.
Jeffrey D. Keeten Having control of my time. I worked for thirty-five years in the book industry and the magazine publishing industry and wished I'd made the jump to writing much sooner.
Jeffrey D. Keeten I believe that writers have to write and when they deny this part of themselves they will be haunted by that need for the rest of their lives. That creative part of your brain has to be fed and even if the rest of your life is taken up by work, family etc. You must carve out some time every day to jot down some lines. Don't be discouraged by bad writing or plot problems because all of it can be fixed just relax and give your mind time to puzzle on it. Eventually a solution will present itself. Keep thinking! Keep writing!
Jeffrey D. Keeten My inspirations come from everywhere. A well written sentence in a book I'm reading can inspire me to get on the computer and dash off a few hundred words. My dreams are always a fruitful place for inspiration. Sometimes a mild writer's block can be broken by a twenty minute doze. I so often rise from a nap and go AH HA...that's where we are going. I remember I once wrote a short story after seeing a woman in a wedding dress pushing a baby carriage up a hill in San Francisco. Inspiration to write can come from anywhere. I just have to stay aware of everything that goes on around me and log it away. Something I noticed ten years ago could be a perfect segment in a story today.
Jeffrey D. Keeten I had this character named Vernon Diggs who floated into my mind during a writing exercise with other writers. He reminds me of the John Shooter character in the movie Secret Window. The other characters in the book were soon referring to him as Vernon "Fucking" Diggs. He has that kind of impact on people.
