Charles Cordell Juris, thank you for the offer - it sounds interesting. However, I think this might be more a question for my publisher than for me.

However, I fear it might be rather complex with the historical fiction I wright - my books are multi-perspective, with a number of main characters.
Charles Cordell Glad you found The Keys of Hell and Death and - thank you for the brilliant review.
Charles Cordell Juris, thank you for getting in touch and no problem - ask away on this Q&A. If it gets too complicated, we can switch later.
Charles Cordell Toni, thank you so much for this and for your great review! I am sorry I did not spot this earlier - I have had my head down trying to finish book #2. It is almost there! Just a couple more chapters to crack. I really hope you and others will enjoy it as much as the first.

If you are interested, there is also a short story (free) on the website that aims to help fill the gap between the two books.

Thank again for the feedback - it really makes a difference.

Charles Cordell Much of God's Vindictive Wrath draws on my own experiences, particularly operational deployments. The writing has been described as brutal. It is realistic. I don’t believe in trivialising violence. The British Civil Wars were the bloodiest in our history – worse than the Great War of 1914-18.

I have also drawn on time spent in overseas posts tackling extremism. The more I studied the 17th Century, the more I realised I was seeing the same issues and situations driving conflict today. Rapid population growth coupled with climate change, the Little Ice Age, led to collapsing living standards and decreasing life expectancy. People searched for answers, turning to more and more extreme political and religious ideas.

Ultimately, the 1640s were the most violent period in history. Conflicts raged across the globe from Japan, through China and Eurasia to the Americas. We now know this period as The General Crisis. It included the British Civil Wars, as well as the Thirty Years War and the European Wars of Religion.

There are so many extraordinary stories from the British Civil Wars. They just need to be told. In the end, I felt I had to tell this story, to do justice to those extraordinary times and to reflect on our own situation today.
Charles Cordell I have always loved history. I think good historical fiction can be a great way to reflect on our own situation, as well as being a great way to learn a chunk of history. I started to write in a period of frustration – after almost back-to-back operational tours and as my Army career hit a speed bump. I looked for something else I could do, something different. I think it was good to have an alternative, creative focus – not just the Army.
Charles Cordell I think most outsiders find the literary industry opaque. It is difficult to understand. There is a wealth of (usually) well-meaning advice. But this is often contradictory, reflecting an industry with no clear standard practices. Some of those practices appear unbelievably arcane.

It is a beautiful and a cruel world, filled with joy and bitter disappointment. I would implore anyone thinking of entering it to do their research first. The average author earns surprisingly little. Huge numbers of very good writers don’t get published. Many good books receive no marketing support and go unread.

Ultimately, there is a great deal of luck involved. I feel extremely fortunate to have my manuscript published. I can only hope that enough readers find, buy, read and enjoy God’s Vindictive Wrath. If not, the chances of more of the Divided Kingdom series being published are slim.

Charles Cordell I am working on book #2 in the Divided Kingdom series of books. This will see some of the characters from God's Vindictive Wrath march and clash again. However, it will also introduce some new characters. The book should be out in early 2023. In the meantime, I am also close to finishing a short story which should bridge the gap between the two books.
