The Affliction began as a single story. But I fell in love with the characters and "the world" of that story, so I found myself returning, trying to see the story from different angles. And, as a result, I ended up writing more stories. After six years, I found that the stories were really linked and culminated in more than a collection of stories. I then spent two years reworking and ordering them to create a novel out of the stories. I have always been attracted to the occult and mythic stories. I wanted to read something like that with Latino characters. In the end, I decided just to write something like that myself.

I am currently working on a novel, a prequel of sorts to my novel in stories, THE AFFLICTION. I am also slowly writing new poems and new short stories.

I believe the most important thing for an aspiring writer is to read widely and voraciously. I still believe writers are people who love reading books so much that at some point the only way to love books more is to write one as well, to add to the conversation. I encourage aspiring writers to read across genre, across history, and (via translation) across languages.
