It just popped into my head. Of course, behind that popping were years of thinking about issues of gender and race and politics. But once the kernel of the idea popped, I was able to flesh it out with characters and narrative twists.

Write. Keep writing. Don't worry about getting it right or pulling it together all at once. Just write. The more you write, the better you will get. And enjoy it. If you don't enjoy it, then try sculpture or photography. Because if there is no joy in the writing, what's the point? Reject the romantic stereotype of the tortured writer!

Words. Playing with words. Making them go this way and that way. Bending them toward a particular emotion. Building an entire environment or worldview by lining up words end to end. I consider myself a word recycler. Writing is a salvage art form utilizing previously-used words in a way that creates a new vision or statement.

I have to confess...I don't really get writer's block. For me, it's a matter of whether I have time to write. I get stuck occasionally. True enough. But when that happens, it's because I haven't completely thought through the particular plot situation. Once I figure things out, the writing flows. So I always have faith in the process.
