Susan K. Hamilton My upcoming book "The Devil Inside" (forthcoming from Inkshares, we're waiting for our turn with the editor!) started out as a collection of short stories which were all goinig to be tied together. As it turns out, I had way too much fun with the character who was the link and she ended up being the main character in then novel!
Susan K. Hamilton I really enjoy hearing from readers -- knowing that they got some enjoyment out of one of my stories is a great feeling.
Susan K. Hamilton The worst thing I can do (and usually my first knee-jerk reaction) is to power through it. That usually just leads to me getting frustrated. I try to work on something else if I have an idea, or even do something completely different like pull out the coloring book for grown ups. Usually my brain appreciates the change of pace and then I can go back to the difficult project with fresh eyes and ideas.
Susan K. Hamilton Just write. Find even 15 minutes a day and just write (I know, it can be hard to do). And don't worry if it isn't perfect. First drafts and ideas are supposed to be messy, lumpy, full of holes -- and when you read them over, it is okay to ask yourself, "What the (bleep) was I thinking when I wrote THAT?"

The most important thing is to get the idea out of your head. You can polish and fix later -- that's what editing is for. I like to describe my early drafts as my "pinata drafts." When I'm done, it is going to look goofy, but if I hit it long enough and hard enough with a big stick, then something great will come out of it.
Susan K. Hamilton Right now, I'm just starting work on the follow up to my upcoming novel, "Shadow King." The working title right now is "Shadow Storm." I'm only about 3K words into it, so we're really just at the beginning stages!
