Goodreads asked Susan K. Hamilton:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Susan K. Hamilton Just write. Find even 15 minutes a day and just write (I know, it can be hard to do). And don't worry if it isn't perfect. First drafts and ideas are supposed to be messy, lumpy, full of holes -- and when you read them over, it is okay to ask yourself, "What the (bleep) was I thinking when I wrote THAT?"

The most important thing is to get the idea out of your head. You can polish and fix later -- that's what editing is for. I like to describe my early drafts as my "pinata drafts." When I'm done, it is going to look goofy, but if I hit it long enough and hard enough with a big stick, then something great will come out of it.
