I am an American writer and former book editor living in London. I'm fascinated by the cultural differences between England and America, especially as they are expressed through language. In March 2015, Gotham Books (Penguin USA) will publish my book, THAT'S NOT ENGLISH: Britishisms, Americanisms and What Our English Says About Us. I live in Islington with my husband, our children, Anne and Henry, and our cat, Sukha.

Thanks so much, Dr. Denise! I am so glad you enjoyed the book.

My writing schedule changes a lot depending on what I'm working on. While I was writing That's Not English, I wrote a few days a week while my daughter (who was three at the time) was at nursery school. I needed to complete one chapter each week. Sometimes that happened and sometimes it didn't! It's hard to say what my favorite part of writing is, but one of the things that I appreciate is that no two work days are ever alike. The challenge is making sure that I work enough, since there is always something that needs doing at home.(less)

Maybe because I started writing books as a writer-for-hire, at a time when I already had a young child at home (now I have two), I believe in getting down to work absolutely whenever and wherever you have the time. Conditions will almost never be perfect. It is always scary to confront an empty screen, but I try to remind myself that a first draft is low-stakes. I'm likely the only one who will read it and I'm my own harshest critic. Once the first draft is written, it's all editing and that, to me, is the fun part. (less)

I now pronounce you... A local.

Last weekend, this showed up on my Facebook feed and I can't resist sharing... In this episode ofAnglophenia ("British culture with an American accent"), hostSiobhan Thompsonasks US citizen and fellow YouTube star Rusty Ward of Science Friction to pronounce some British place names, and hilarity ensues. I love this because it reminds me of every time I've ever landed somewhere new and had to learn Read more of this blog post »

“E. B. White explained it well: To foreigners, a Yankee is an American. To Americans, a Yankee is a Northerner. To Northerners, a Yankee is a New Englander. To New Englanders, a Yankee is a Vermonter. And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast.”

“Americans are sociable and approval-seeking. They look for common ground with others and genuinely want to connect.”
Erin Moore, That's Not English: Britishisms, Americanisms, and What Our English Says About Us

“The Americans have been obliged to invent a new verb for which we have no use over here—‘to enthuse.’ Why don’t we enthuse? And why, if we do conjugate this verb in secret, are we so afraid to let it be known? . . . We fear terribly to encourage ourselves or others. The people over there are not afraid. They let themselves go individually and independently over what they like or admire, and pour forth torrents of generous praise which we should shrink from voicing unless we were quite sure that everybody else agreed with us, or unless the object of our admiration had been a long time dead.” The English may detect a note of condescension here, but an American won’t.”
