What Drives Me NUTS

poetryIt drives me NUTS sometimes how underappreciated poetry is. Sure, some of it is unapproachable and just doesn’t speak to us. But if we sample enough of it, we begin to find our favorite poets. The ones who resonate with us. The ones who speak our metaphoric language and remind us that we’re not alone.

Sometimes I come across a...

Comic Novel on Amazon Countdown

My comic novel, Quentin and the Cave Boy, is on Amazon countdown starting today. Only 99 cents for 20 more hours, then it goes up! (If you don't have a Kindle, you can download the free Kindle app for your PC, Mac, iPad or other tablet. http://ezrd.me/r/?rd=083EAGyt (Also available in paperback!)

Here's the blurb:

The STONE Age meets the TEENage! Quentin Moss is an average 13-year-old boy with an anything-but-average problem: the cave boy he dreamed about last night has shown up, alive and smelly, in his bedroom. As past and present collide with comic consequences, Quentin must hide the secret identity of his new friend who is fascinated by zippers and loves to flush the toilet — over and over again. Before the day is over, Quentin and his best friend, Dex, have to find a way to help the homesick cave boy get back to his home — thousands of years in the past. But first they have to get through the school day. Quentin may not be the cutest, smartest guy in school, but the way he deals with the greatest adventure of his life will have readers of all ages laughing out loud.

Another Chipmunk Saved!

chipmunkIt’s chipmunk season here in the mountains of North Carolina, which means our cat, Sammy, is in touch with his primal instincts, much like the story of Quentin and the Cave Boy where Quentin meets his cave boy self. For Quentin, the cave boy comes out of a dream and ends up sitting on his bed wearing animal skins and with bugs crawling out of...

Julia Butterfly Hill Quote: What Do You Love?

Julia Butterfly Hill“Our thoughts limit what we’re capable of doing. There are external forces arrayed against us, but there are also internal forces that sabotage us before we even get started. Our mind is good at setting us up for failure and getting us to think small. But I have found that we will do for love that which we don’t think is possible....

Carrying the Spark: Video Interview

Last week I told you that if I had the courage, I was going to release an excerpt of a video interview taken last month. Well, I’m gathering that fearlessness now. Other than my books, this is the most personal, REAL, thing I’ve ever posted anywhere. (Even as I type this, there is a part of me that says: delete this […]

All Serious Daring Starts from Within

Southern writer, Eudora Welty, said: “I am a writer who came of a sheltered life. A sheltered life can be a daring life as well. For all serious daring starts from within.” Those of you who know me at all can guess why I would love this quote. No, it’s not because I have led a sheltered […]

New Comic Novel: The STONE Age meets the TEENage

Dear friends and readers, I can’t tell you how busy 2014 has been already! Lots of wonderful things are going on that I’m really excited about. Fearless writers were in my living room earlier in the year. I have new books coming out (2 this month)! Another was released in paperback. An amazing interview was […]

Spring as a Metaphor for a Creative Life

The following is a guest post by Wendy Manner, one of the fearless women who participated in my most recent Fearless Writing for Women workshops.  ———– Everyone knows gardening is a metaphor for life. After all, “life’s a garden, dig it!” But as my family spends time walking our land and waiting for spring in all […]

The Power of a Great Novel

“Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. […]
