I am back from Florida, Maryland, Washington D.C. and Virginia.
How was it?
To describe it best, I am going to have to borrow some words from Annabeth (in West Chester, Ohio) who wrote me a letter featuring these amazing words:
My favorite part in Edward Tulane, was when Lucy the dog finds Edward at the dump. I got a feeling that almost lifted me off the ground.
That is what it was like, for me, to meet and connect with so many passionate readers (young and old).
It was a feeling that

When kids (and adults) ask me where I get the ideas for my stories, I tell them that I keep a notebook with me. Always.
In the notebook, I write down what I see and what I overhear.
I write down character names that pop into my head.
I write down images that haunt me.
Yesterday, when I got to the hotel in D.C., I realized I didn't have my notebook.
I panicked.
Long story short: I found the notebook buried in my luggage.
But for the few hours that it was missing, I learned just how much I nee...

Dispatch from Florida
Here is one (of many) highlights from my visit to the Sunshine State:
A ten year old boy who stood in front of me and looked me in the eye and said "I just want you to know that every word, every phrase, every sentence of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane spoke to my heart."
Talk about speaking to the heart.
Florida, I thank you.

I have a friend who heard a cooing noise coming from her fireplace and thought that a pigeon was trapped in the chimney.
She called a wild animal removal service.
It turned out that the pigeon was, in fact, a squirrel.
The man from the wild animal removal service put on gloves and caught the squirrel.
And then he asked my friend if she wanted to feel something cool.
When she said yes, he had her put her finger on the squirrels chest--right directly over the beating heart.
The animal remova...

I took this picture in Bellingham, Washington last Friday night.
The great thing about traveling to a place you have never been before is that your eyes are open in a way they might not be at home.
And your heart, too.
It is like Seamus Heaney has it in his poem Postscript:
You are neither here nor there,/A hurry through which known and strange things pass/As big soft buffetings come at the car sideways/And catch the heart off guard and blow it open.
I was in Bellingham for the W...

I was on Bainbridge Island last week to do a signing and reading and I keep thinking about something a librarian told me after I signed her books.
She said that years ago she read Because of Winn-Dixie aloud to a group of kids; and when she got to the end of the book, there was a long silence.
And then, a boy raised his hand and said, Can I hug that book?
She handed him Because of Winn-Dixie and he hugged it.
And then he passed the book to the next kid, who hugged it, too.
All you tea...
