Daniel Thompson is the author of The Great Apocalypse, the first book of the Sparlock of the Multiverse Trilogy.

His life has taught him much about the conflict between faith and reason. Growing up in a Jehovah's Witness household, he became an ordained minister at the age of ten. Much of his youth and early adulthood has been spent giving Bible sermons and preaching in remote parts of the United States including Northern Wisconsin, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and the Badlands region of South Dakota. He has been bitten by dogs, chased by bulls, and threatened with physical violence. He may have even knocked on your door. If so, he apologizes for disturbing you.

Writing seems to be a safe outlet for such ambitions. It's as close as I will ever come to omnipotence.

Of course, there is a downside. I often grow attached to my characters. It can be difficult to subject them to the kinds of harrowing experiences that are expected in a good story.

I sometimes wonder, if there is a god, is he is some kind of author? Perhaps the world is a hyper-realistic, multimedia manifestation of a novel with a very complex plot. A good author with the ability to present his ideas in that format would be unlikely to create a world that is pleasant but boring. No. He would want to create a truly novel world (pardon the pun) with dramatic action, poignant humor, touching love scenes, and a good dose of tragedy. It wouldn't be much different than the world in which we live. He might not even realize that his intricate literary creations have attained self-awareness. If so, that would provide at least a partial defense to the accusation that he willfully permits suffering.

There you go. The problem of evil solved. What was your question again? Oh yeah. I also like how being an author gives me an opportunity to engage in philosophical speculations. (less)

An Alternate Teaser for The Great Apocalypse

Here is a teaser for The Great Apocalypse that didn’t make it to the Amazon sales page:

The Great Apocalypse (Alternate Teaser)

He was supposed to be dead.

The original story was clear. His rebellion ended in disgrace centuries ago. His faded memory survived as a warning to those who dare speak against man’s most cherished institutions.

Preachers frightened their congregations with this tale of
