Forest keeper by Oksana Kerro

Forest keeper by Oksana Kerro (freelance concept artist and illustrator)

Oksana Kerro wrote:

One day in the mountains where lived fierce grolls broke out a terrible famine. One of the tribes came down into the thick swampy forest for the first time searching for food.

Some grolls were very fond of soft ground and a warm climate, and they did not want to go back when the hard times passed.

Songs of trees replaced the roar of native mountains for them and they began to call themselves Yolu, “tree shepherds.” Their bodies and souls changed over the centuries, Yolu lost their ferocity, they became wiser and calmer, the first druids appeared among them.

Most capable Yolu became the druids, who knew how to listen to the forest song especially attentively and save it in memory. After the ceremony they became keepers and were dedicated to the service forever. With age, they overgrew with moss, shoots and lichens, becoming home to other creatures. Souls of Yolu druids did not die, they fell asleep in the bodies which turned into trees, and they still continue to protect the forest.

Christopher T. Pesce

Christopher T. Pesce is a semisedentary homo sapien-sapien. Born on Long Island, New York during the cold war. Third and fourth generation Italian-American. Sports, family, mischief, and comedy. En route to Parris Island, South Carolina, summer of 2004, Pesce began Marine Corps boot camp. As a motor transport marine he was stationed at Twentynine Palms, California, later deploying to Western Al Anbar Province, Iraq, summer of 2006. Pesce moved to Los Angeles to begin college following an honorable discharge, moved to San Francisco to finish college with degrees in U.S. history, social and behavioral sciences, as well as TEFL certifications. Pesce moved to the North Eastern Sierras to contemplate, paint, and write, ending up in Oaxaca, Mexico for a little while to explore, teach and wait for the snows to return. He continues to live, paint, and write in Tahoe; two ladies, both named B.B. keep him happy and healthy and he tries to do the same in return.

Shocked and Awekword: American Vernacular

Author shares handful of thoughts through poetry, art Christopher T. Pesce writes poetry, paint pictures of ‘the landscape’ in ‘Shocked and Awekword: American Vernacular’

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Poetry and art sporadically worked their ways into and out of Pesce’s life. As an adult, writing and painting became Pesce’s preferred routes towards organizing his thoughts. Slowly overtime, this book curated itself, according to Pesce, resulting in: “Shocked and Awekword: American Vernacular” (published by Xlibris). It is a poetry and art book written by a 30-year-old that lives in the mountains. Pesce is obsessed with his dog, Bora Bora and to describe her, he quotes Madonna in the classic film: “A League of Their Own,” by saying: “It’s more than just a name, it’s an attitude…” He enjoys quiet moments and conversing with creative minds, and he attempts to transcend twice a day. The difference between love and lust are contemplated in the book, the curious nature of a U.S. Marine Corps and Iraq War Veteran living in post-9/11 America is explored.

“There is a renewed interest in poetry. Poetry never went away, but lately I have noticed a renewed interest by would-be-outsiders of the discipline itself. Poetry either tries to make a simple topic difficult, or a difficult topic simple. Much of a Poet’s drive is to write concisely and in a truthful manner” Pesce shares. He wanted to put another point of view out into the atmosphere. Some of his most genuine thoughts come from personal experiences, conversations with people known to him, as well as conversations with cigarette smoking stranger “buddies” on streets in various places, usually shivering. He, and rightfully so, questions the “relevancy” of anything in today’s society, and doesn’t want to put that kind of pressure on the back of his one hundred sixteen page baby. Egalitarianism is explored, being a veteran of arguably the most unpopular war in American history is an underlying theme, American art and culture are celebrated. The take-away for the reader is this: “We are all in this together… That is fact. Both great and terrifying, factual information.” This is Pesce’s first book to be published, a solid prefacing passage is titled: “Type-T: Predominantly — I think about moving and movement and mountains. Ultimately — I think about moving mountains.”

The Teacher

The Teacher by Devin Elle Kurtz
Follow the artist:

Tamber Ella wrote:

In the ancient times, the gods came down from the stars. Pescadora the leopard, the child of two original star gods, was chosen as the protector of a massive and beautiful forest. She ate only fish and collected opalescent scales and shells in her hidden forest palace. Ancient people left her offerings of dried fish, shiny metal, and gemstones.

Thousands of years later, the gods had mostly been forgotten and the few who remained could be counted on a hand. Pescadora stayed hidden in her sprawling forest throughout history. She used her magic to confuse any visitors that meant harm, turning them around repeatedly until they no longer attempted to enter the forest. She disoriented armies, logging companies, kings and emperors. Over the millennia, her once strong body began to fail.

In a town by the edge of the forest, a woman gifted with magic, by the name of Maria, conceived a child. Maria has god’s blood in her veins, but humankind has all but lost any record of the gods by now. As a child she could re-animate dead birds and sprout trees from the ground. As an adult, her magic faded, but she never lost the sparkle in her eye and lives a joyful life with her husband, a professor at the local institute of higher education. On a sunny day, their daughter Mia arrived, and she grew into a shy, witty, and magical little toddler.

From the edge of the forest, Pescadora spied the girl with her failing eyes. Her bones creaked as she crept through the brush, and she knew she had few years left. Pescadora approached Maria at dusk and asked for her blessing to take Mia as an apprentice. Maria was enthralled by Pescadora and her heart was filled with awe and wonder. She could feel the magic hanging in the air around the leopard god and it took her back to her own days as a magical child. She brought Pescadora into her home and they sat with Mia together into the night. Maria’s husband, a man of science and knowledge, was difficult to convince and worried about his precious daughter’s safety. But Maria knew a chance like this could not be overlooked. It was what she had always dreamed of as a child: a way to preserve her magic and use it for the greater good.

Slowly at first, Pescadora brought Mia into the forest, teaching her to funnel magic into her hands and feet so she could climb through the branches with ease. She learned to walk across the lake, speak with the rabbits, and heal minor wounds. One day when she was four, she began to sprout peacock feathers in a crest along her forehead. This was the mark of Pescadora’s magic flowing through her veins. The townspeople were bemused at first, but slowly accepted the presence of magic in their town. Her father was finally fully convinced one afternoon when he watched Mia fall, scrape her knee, and then instantaneously close the wound.

As Mia grew up and learned more and more about the duties of a forest god, Pescadora grew blind and frail. As she taught Mia, she funneled her magic into the child, losing more and more each day until she was hardly more than a mortal. Mia spent much of her time by her teacher, always with a hand on Pescadora’s side so the god could feel the world around her using Mia’s magic. The two talked endlessly, and Mia relayed the stories to her father, who compiled the tales of the gods into books. Maria, endlessly proud of her daughter, illustrated the books and distributed them across the country. Although most who read the stories thought them only children’s tales and folklore, the books brought wealth to the town, and the town was able to petition the government for the forest’s preservation and protection for generations to come.

Joe Zieja

Joe Zieja is the author of the EPIC FAILURE series, the first book of which – Mechanical Failure – debuted in 2016 to critical acclaim; many compared it to the works of both Pratchett and Adams. A humorous science fiction series set in a future military setting that is as absurd and bureaucratic as today’s large government organizations, it tells the story of ex-sergeant R. Wilson Rogers’ struggles against actually having to do any real work. Particularly the saving-the-galaxy kind.

Joe is also known as a prominent voice actor, appearing in the iconic role of Fox McCloud in STAR FOX ZERO: THE BATTLE BEGINS, and other popular titles such as Persona 5, Oxenfree, Shadowverse, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Mobile Suit GUNDAM: Iron Blooded Orphans.

Book One: Mechanical Failure

A smooth-talking ex-sergeant, accustomed to an easygoing peacetime military, unexpectedly re-joins the fleet and finds soldiers preparing for the strangest thing—war.

The two hundred years’ (and counting) peace is a time of tranquility that hasn’t been seen since…well, never. Mankind in the Galactic Age had finally conquered war, so what was left for the military to do but drink and barbecue? That’s the kind of military that Sergeant R. Wilson Rogers lived in before he left the fleet to become a smuggler.

But it turns out that smuggling is hard. Like getting-arrested-for-dealing-with-pirates-and-forced-back-into-service kind of hard. It doesn’t seem so bad—the military was a perpetual tiki party anyway—but when Rogers returns after only a year away, something has changed. These are soldiers—actualsoldiers doing actual soldier things like preparing for a war that Rogers is sure doesn’t exist. Rogers vows to put a stop to all this nonsense—even if it means doing actual work.

Lady of the Lake

Lady of the Lake by Vulpa

“So wondrous wild, the whole might seem

the scenery of a fairy dream”

― Walter Scott, The Lady of the Lake

From the ethereal realms of myth and legend the Lady of the lake has emerged as a powerful symbol of the land and our world. With noble grace she selects her champion to venture forth carrying mystic power in the form the ancient sword Excalibur.

This painting contains a number of symbolic and allegorical references:

The Lady – The figure is depicted as regal and pristine with and otherworldly quality. There is a widely subscribed belief that her persona derives from tales of ancient Celtic goddesses. Bodies of water such as springs, wells, lakes and marshes were often presided over by a goddess.
Celtic knot Patterns –  The brocade beads and girdle are decorated with Celtic knotwork designs. This is a reference to the Lady’s possible Celtic roots.
Dusk – The scene is set at dusk, a magical hour between day and night, between life and death, between the mortal world and the fae magical world.
The Moon – The moon can be seen appearing in the twilight sky, waxing high to herald the growing power emerging.
Glastonbury Tor – Faintly looming in the distance I placed Glastonbury Tor, the standing sentinel presiding over what is believed by some to be the mystical Isle of Avalon referred to in legend.
Marsh –  The lady appears through the marsh upon the edge of a lake. The beautiful and haunting Avalon Marshes are at the heart of Somerset’s Levels consisting of rich meadows, small woods, reed-beds, lakes, pools. It is believed that during the iron age, marshes were considered the boundary between this world and the next, a mystical place governed by the deities they believed in.
Bulrushes – This is a water plant that symbolises balance and stability. With strong roots it solidifies the water’s edge transforming it to rich and fertile land.
Magical Sword – Within her grasp the Lady presents the fabled magical sword Excalibur that belonged to the legendary King Arthur. It was returned to her in the lake upon the death of the heroic king and waits for him to return to us in our greatest hour of need.
Runes – The blade is inscribed with the Angelo Saxon runes, ‘the once and future king,’ alluding to T. H. White telling of the Arthurian legend. We wait for Arthur’s arrival.
