An Interview with Katja H. Labonté
Hey folks! Springtime in Surrey has been out for over a year, but I have wanted to interview Katja for a while! I’m just finally getting around to sharing this interview, so enjoy!
Springtime in Surrey would be a great book to give as a Christmas present to a reader you love, so what better time to feature it again than now? Click here to grab a copy from the Press website!

Hi, I’m Katja! I’m a Christian, an extreme bibliophile who devours over 365 books in a year, and an exuberant writer with a talent for starting short stories that explode into book series. I’m also a bilingual French-Canadian and has about a dozen topics I’m excessively passionate about (hint: that’s why I write). I focus on both contemporary and historical fiction, as well as non-magical historical and contemporary kingdom fiction, and I cover themes of worth, love, peace, and Christian growth.
What was your favorite thing about being a part of Springtime in Surrey?Honestly, I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of this amazing team and publication company. I love our anthology, I’m a big fan of the other authors in the book, I adore the cover—there’s so many blessings attached to this for me!
In what ways are you like your leading lady or if you’re not like her at all, how are you different? My leading lady is Catrìona Roylett and I am very, very like her. She’s about 22, and the hero describes her as small and plump, with dark brown hair and grey-blue eyes … aka, me. She’s studious, very conventional, and determined to find a good match in London society (okay, so that’s not quite the same as me). She has my weaker relationship with God, my desire for marriage and life purpose and to control things … she’s a portrayal of a lot of my flaws, honestly; but she also has a lot of my tastes and likes, such as fashionable clothes, books, and a love of learning.
If you could visit Surrey, would you?
Hands down! I adore England and its history and have always, always wanted to explore. My dream is to live there for a year or so and really get to experience the place.
Perfectionism. I was gripped the whole way through with imposter syndrome, perfectionism paralysis, anxiety, and comparison. I was 100% sure my story was the worst and everyone would hate it, and that makes writing really, really hard. The team offered me way more grace than I deserve as I floundered in my overwhelm and I am so grateful! I don’t think I’ve overcome it yet, but I’m working on it, and what I’ve discovered is facing your fears head on and not letting them and the tasks build up really helps. <3 It’s often so much easier than you thought it would be once you get started.
What advice would you give to authors who are interested in joining an anthology?Honestly evaluate where you are in your life right now and see if you can handle it. An anthology is a lot of effort and while it has tons of opportunities, it’s also a ton of responsibility. But also trust yourself and your God, and know you are stronger than you think you are! Don’t doubt yourself too much and just focus on doing your best instead of being THE best.
What are you working on now?I’m writing a nonmagical fantasy retelling of The Blue Bird and The Three Musketeers for the Cornerstone Series, and I’m currently writing a story for the WBWP Fingerprints in Frost anthology. Lots of research going on.
I blog at littleblossomsforjesus.wordpress.com and post monthly wrap-ups mentioning my writing updates, and life updates too!

Aubrey Montgomery has three problems: the care of his adolescent sisters, the managing of his household, and his own loneliness. Over two years have passed since he was rejected by Cassie Hilton. Although he no longer trusts himself to love a woman properly, he could settle for an amicable partnership—if the right woman came along.
Lorelei Hilton only has one problem that she knows of: her manipulative and controlling father is arranging a marriage to a spineless boy in order to maintain the family business—and keep it out of her very determined, very female hands. But if Lorelei can’t force her way through a door, she’ll crawl in a window. To rescue herself and her sister, she sails off to England in search of a man with the gumption to stand up to her father.
After a chance meeting and an intense contract negotiation, Lorelei and Aubrey agree to a marriage of convenience. As they grow closer and struggle through the trials of their utilitarian arrangement, Aubrey is left with a question. Can the sacrament of marriage be entirely practical—or is there something otherworldly about it?
Like the Air After Rain is the second novel in The Hilton Legacy, a stand-alone trilogy featuring characters from the author’s first series, The Chronicles of Alice and Ivy.

Interview with Erika Mathews (A Year of Springtime in Surrey)
Hey folks! Today I’m sharing something new for the A Year of Springtime in Surrey Celebration … an interview with Erika Mathews, one of our authors!
I won’t keep you waiting … let’s introduce you to Erika!
Hi! I’m Erika Mathews, the author of Fear Not Tomorrows in Springtime in Surrey. I’ve been writing stories and poems since I was five. I’m an author of several Christian living books, both fiction and non-fiction, that demonstrate the power of the kingdom of God through ordinary people, transforming daily life into His resting life. Kingdom adventure fiction, poetry, devotionals, commentary, and spiritual non-fiction are a few of my favorite genres to write…all of which can be found at restinglife.com. Outside of writing, I edit, mother my young ones, keep house, enjoy the great Minnesota outdoors, play instruments, and make heroic ventures into minimalism, clean eating, and gardening. I’m passionate about a deeper relationship with Jesus and knowing Him through His Word!My story, Fear Not Tomorrows, is set around 1900 and it’s about Margaret Enfield, a cheerful, energetic sister of seven who manages the household for her I’ll mother while also planning her summer wedding. When her fiancé is suddenly called away for an indefinite period of time, Margaret is thrown into worsening depression and desperation. Throughout the springtime, she must choose whether to “fear not tomorrows” and “trust them with Jesus” when it seems impossible. My favorite thing about being a part of SiS is the camaraderie that grew from this group project. There were others to brainstorm and discuss Surrey customs and period correct descriptions with. And it’s so fun to see all the different stories and angles on this quaint part of the country.I’m like my leading lady in that many of the lessons she had to learn in the story are lessons I’ve had to learn (and am still learning). I’m prone to become depressed when life looks bleak and things keep going wrong. I’m prone to throw myself into a task to distract myself from negative things. I’m not as wildly emotional (both in excitement and depression) as she, and definitely not as extroverted. I’m also the oldest of eight siblings, just as she is.Yes, I’d visit Surrey. I always love visiting scenic locations. It would be fun to see in person the inspiration for our stories. The most challenging part was the plotting and drafting. This story fought me tooth and nail and at at least one point I wasn’t sure whether it would ever be any good. However, much prayer led me through to the end, and since its publication, I’ve been amazed at how many people this little story has touched.Do it! If you’re newer to publishing, it’s a great way to get your feet wet in the publishing world without having the sole responsibility for every part of the process. And whether you’re a seasoned author or not, it’s a great opportunity to collaborate and reach new audiences. Also, be proactive about collaboration – part of the fun of an anthology is when your story can be connected (in obvious ways or with vague, brief mentions) to one or more other stories in the anthology!Currently I’m writing a vacation story about a bachelor and his grandfather. I’m also working on publishing my three non-fiction books on prayer, faith, and Constantly Listening. And I’m also plotting my project I’ll be writing in November. You have a few options for keeping updated:You can read about me and my books (and buy them) at restinglife.com.You can sign up for my occasional newsletter at restinglife.com/signup for all the major book news. You can connect with me on a more day to day level on Instagram @erikamathewsauthor.You can kindly stalk me on Facebook, Goodreads, Amazon, and Pinterest @erikamathewsauthor if you’d rather see more random, occasional snippets of my life.[image error]

Interview with Andrea Renee Cox | A Year of Springtime in Surrey
Hey folks! Today I’m sharing something new for the A Year of Springtime in Surrey Celebration … an interview with Andrea Renee Cox, one of our authors!
I won’t keep you waiting … let’s introduce you to Andrea!
Introduce yourself and your
Springtime in Surrey
story!
I’m Andrea from north Texas. I’m a born-again Christian who loves God, family, and country. I found my passion for writing when I was sixteen, but it’s in recent years that my dreams have come true and my stories have begun being published. It’s been a challenging and enjoyable adventure thus far, and I’m looking forward to seeing where God leads me next.
My story in Springtime in Surrey is The Cottage on the Hill, which features a former ballerina who cries into her tea every afternoon and the sheep farmer neighbor who wonders why… and what he can do to cheer her up. Something I love about this story is Adrian’s compassion. It was fun to see him go out of his way to attempt to cheer Moira in her time of need.
What was your favorite thing about being a part of Springtime in Surrey ?
My favorite thing about being in this anthology was the spirit of collaboration among the authors. We all worked together to get the novella collection out on time, and we shared duties in marketing efforts. It was easy to become a team with these ladies, because we all had the same goals: writing stories that honor God and helping the collection find readers who might love it.
In what ways are you like your leading lady? Or if you’re not like her at all, how are you different?
While I was never a professional dancer, I do feel things deeply, as Moira does. I am not always quick to adjust to changes, and neither is she. She loves pastel and bold colors–very much like me! She loves her cottage in rural Surrey, and I very much enjoyed living in the country here in north Texas when I was little.
If you could visit Surrey, would you?
I would love to visit Surrey, especially the quaint villages and country cottages. Maybe it wouldn’t be as idyllic as I like to think, but I’d love to explore a variety of towns and countrysides there to find out.
What was the most challenging part of writing/publishing/marketing your Springtime in Surrey story–and how did you overcome it?
The most challenging thing about writing Cottage was earning that final chapter. I knew from pretty early on that Moira would get a beautiful coda (grand finale), but early drafts left that particular scene feeling like an add-on rather than a crucial piece of the puzzle of Moira’s journey. Overcoming this challenge meant softening up Moira earlier than I had originally planned. Turns out, the final version of Cottage held the exact tone I had desired in the first place, and it’s resonated well with readers so far. The struggle was definitely worth it.
What advice would you give to authors who are interested in joining an anthology?
I have several pieces of advice, but specifically for anthologies: be active in the group and do your part. It’s a team effort, so the more you put in, the more everyone gets out of the project. Plus, it’s a lot of fun getting to know one’s collaborators–participating in anthologies is a great way to build writing friendships!
What are you working on now?
I’m working on several different projects at the moment. My next story to be published is Melting-Pot Thanksgiving (MPT), which will be one of the short stories in Wild Blue Wonder Press’s next anthology, Novelists in November. MPT is about an imperfect daughter who is tasked with creating the perfect Thanksgiving while balancing a tight writing deadline and guiding her two foster children through difficult life events.
One of my favorite things about writing this story was seeing all the various relationships take shape. Grandmother and granddaughter, foster siblings, adult siblings, mother and daughter, and friendship are all featured, and they were a blast to explore.
How can people keep updated on you and your writing?
The best places to keep up to date on my career, life, and faith journeys are my blog and newsletter.

Interview with Rachel Leitch | A Year of Springtime in Surrey
Hey folks! Today I’m sharing something new for the A Year of Springtime in Surrey Celebration … an interview with Rachel Leitch, one of our authors!
I won’t keep you waiting … let’s introduce you to Rachel!
Introduce yourself and your Springtime in Surrey story!
Hi! I’m Rachel Leitch, the author of The Odd Duck Society. I write young adult historical fiction with a dash of adventure. I love authentic stories of self-discovery, free of hurtful stereotypes and harsh content. I live in northern Indiana with my momma, three sisters, two brothers, and a dog who thinks he’s the hero of everyone’s story.
In my story The Odd Duck Society, Jessamy Aubertine is too much for her university classmates, too little for her overstressed mum, and nothing in between. In an attempt to make herself useful, she takes on a spring holiday at her childhood home in Box Hill to sell the family’s fading tea shop and somehow tell her mum that she intends to switch study plans.
When mysterious letters signed by famous authors show up, can Jessamy and a pair of unlikely comrades find the writer behind the missives–and perhaps discover themselves as well? Or will their friendship fade with The Muses at the end of spring holiday?
What was your favorite thing about being a part of Springtime in Surrey?
It sounds so cheesy to say, but definitely the team. Everyone was so supportive of each other. We had some on our team that had done launches like these a dozen times before, and some, like me, were doing it for the first time. Some had more time than others and would step up to pick up the slack when others couldn’t for one reason or another. We were understanding of each other as we went through hard things and just the everyday stress. And in turn, I was able to give that support back to them when they needed some help or encouragement. It was a great balance of giving and taking. They were so patient with me and I never felt like I was asking a dumb question. I certainly didn’t do it all perfectly, but with their support, I have learned so much that I am taking with me to the next step in my writing career.
In what ways are you like your leading lady? Or if you’re not like her at all, how are you different?
Jessamy often feels like she is either too much or too little. And I think that’s something that I can relate a lot to, as well as something people reading my story can relate to. We’ve all had times or had people that make us feel like we’re too much–like there’s something about us that just is over the top. And we’ve all had times or had people that make us feel too little–like we’re not doing enough or being enough. They’re two very unique feelings and yet two very universal feelings.
And that definitely was an aspect that I pulled from my own experiences and things I was feeling at the time. My family was going through a rough time and it was hard to know what they needed me to do and what I was supposed to be. This story helped bring me through that, and I hope it does for others, too.
If you could visit Surrey, would you?
Absolutely! It has history enough for many many more stories, and I’d love to go learn everything I could. It also seems like it could be a very lovely, very relaxing place to spend some time.
What was the most challenging part of writing/publishing/marketing your Springtime in Surrey story–and how did you overcome it?
This was my largest project I’d ever written on an official deadline, and there were definitely times that it wasn’t clicking and I was worried that it wouldn’t fall into place. But overall, the drafting and editing was one of my smoothest experiences yet, and I’m very grateful that God gave me that. Marketing has been a little tricky to keep up on, and I’m so glad I had this practice run and the support of the WBWP team to get through it. Marketing is a lot going on all the time, and it has helped me realize the things that I’m good at, the things I need to work at, and the things that aren’t as big a deal as I thought. Nothing compares to getting that hands on experience.
What advice would you give to authors who are interested in joining an anthology?
If you find one that has a good team, absolutely go for it. It is wonderful experience and a great way to make connections within your writing world. Do make sure that you find one that’s going to help support you through the journey, and do make sure you find one with a good team of authors. I was really fortunate to get both of those things in this anthology.
Even if it doesn’t seem like a genre you would write, don’t be afraid to give it a try. I am primarily a young adult author, but trying my hand at women’s fiction for this anthology has proven to be a great learning experience. Speaking of, if women’s fiction interests you, I would highly recommend submitting to one of Wild Blue Wonder Press’ upcoming anthologies–they have a great team and are very supportive through the whole project.
What are you working on now?
Currently, I have a French Revolution Beauty and the Beast retelling in consideration at a publishing house. While I’m in the waiting game for that, I’m editing an 80s road trip story with touches of Terri Blackstock’s If I Run and Caroline George’s The Summer We Forgot, with the intent to pitch it this summer.
How can people keep updated on you and your writing?
The best way to keep up with what I’m up to is to sign up for my newsletter at racheljleitch.com. By signing up for the newsletter, you’ll not only get my blog posts in your inbox each month, but also receive a free short story and exclusive writing updates. The second best way is to follow me on Instagram @racheljleitchauthor where I post about authentic fiction.

Behind the Scenes of the Anthology Process | A Year of Springtime in Surrey
Today I thought I’d share a little behind the scenes of our Springtime in Surrey anthology process (which applies to our other Wild Blue Wonder Press anthologies to a degree).
I’ll be doing this interview style because it simplifies things, but I’m the one answering all the questions!
Why did you decide to start publishing anthologies with Wild Blue Wonder Press?Lately I’ve been mulling over this …
The whys of all the things I’ve taken for granted.
In this case, though, I’m talking about, “Why I decided to host 4 seasonal anthologies through Wild Blue Wonder Press.”
As you know, Springtime in Surrey is already launched, and that will be followed by Novelists in November (November 2024), Fingerprints in Frost, and Whispers in Waves.
Though it may not seem like it, these indeed represent spring, fall, winter, and summer (in that order).
Anyways, the reason I wanted to do this was twofold:
I felt that launching anthologies would give me an actionable way to encourage, highlight, and train new authors and/or work with indie authors I respect and admire.
I wanted to share a lot of stories with one purpose: honoring God and tackling tough themes.
Now, not all our authors fit neatly into those two categories (new/experienced) and not all our stories have ridiculously complex themes – some seem like simple, quiet stories.
But at the end of the day, they all are stories that matter. Stories of quality. Stories that are there to inspire you to think.
I write stories to encourage young Christian women to think deeply and pursue both grace and truth.
And getting to work with so many authors with a similar mission statement is a huge blessing for me – and I hope for them, too.
How do you select the authors and stories for your anthologies? When submissions close, I look through all the form submissions and make a mental note of the people I would love to work with. It’s usually a lot more people than I can actually work with, but I also make sure that:
Some of the authors have experience … and some have none.
There’s a good variety of types of people (personality, stories, interests, ages, platforms).
They all bring something unique to the collection.
And they all have to be passionate about all the things Wild Blue Wonder Press stands for, of course!
I also try to discern who has a good attitude and will be a team player, no matter their previous experience with writing and publishing.
You can’t always tell, but I want to be on the look out for authors who are only in it for themselves and won’t bring any meaningful contributions to the anthology … and avoid them.
No matter how great their stories are, or how much they’ve done in publishing, it would be a let-down for both myself and the rest of the team to have someone along for the ride who isn’t willing to contribute.
Once I have this list (which includes all the authors with notes on which would be the best fit and why, but without any definitive decisions made), I download all the stories and start reading through them. I do a quick skim at first, and some stories get put on a “no” or “probably not” list at first. That said, I do not eliminate any authors/stories until I have read them all.
Once they are all skimmed, I choose the ones I will probably go with and go through, reading them more thoroughly and taking notes. I add them to the “yes” or “no” list until I have a final list of authors. Sometimes during this process, I end up eliminating a story that surprises me because it doesn’t fit the collection, or Wild Blue Wonder Press as a whole, or because there’s something significant that’s off about the plot, characters, writing, or other pieces of the story that just make it … well, not editable to the point of publication.
There are other factors, too, of course. It’s always a bad sign, for instance, when the author has put little time into their submission – whether it’s missing formatting guidelines, ignoring the requirements we’ve placed for short stories in terms of writing or genre, or simply not taking time to give thorough answers in the form.
There’s also another element there, of course … whether a gut feeling or a nudge of the Holy Spirit. But in truth, a lot of the time, I just can’t publish every single submission, so I have to make some tough calls!
What kind of support do you offer authors throughout the process of contributing to an anthology with Wild Blue Wonder Press? This is one of those things that is difficult to quantity, but I try to do whatever I can to make sure authors who work with Wild Blue Wonder Press come away with a pleasant experience. I believe in going above and beyond the call of duty, especially for authors who have entrusted their stories to my business for publication, so I try to offer any aid I can along the way. If that includes extra help with editing, marketing, or anything in between, I give it!
How do you manage the logistics of publishing an anthology, from submission to launch? As I mentioned before, publishing an anthology is a team effort. I believe that every author in the collection – no matter how experienced or inexperienced – has something to offer. Though I do take the lion’s share of the tasks, from marketing to critiques to all the little in between things – I have been blessed with a great team with both of my anthologies. We’ve all worked together to get these anthologies launched, all taking tasks and jobs. If you want to work with Wild Blue Wonder Press, we can absolutely be flexible to a degree … but this is a team endeavor, and being considerate to your team members means taking a task and doing it to the best of your ability in the time allotted!
