Good bye Bill

I just found out that a friend of mine, Bill Patterson has died suddenly. Devastated. We met in 1997 through the Heinlein fandom and it was he who encouraged me to write for the Heinlein Journal, my first experience of being in print. I had the honor of writing a review of his book on Stranger in a Strange Land for the Journal.

Bill was cultured, courteous, and possessed of intellect, charm and integrity. His biography of Heinlein was a tour de force and I was eagerly anticipating the second volume. Amazon has it coming out in June. I wish he could see the reception it will get; I know it will be a good one.

There are a few BNFs in the Heinlein fandom and Bill was indisputably one of them. I'm honored to have been his friend and to have learned so much from him about Heinlein, writing, and the art of diplomacy when we were directors of the Heinlein Society for a brief time.

He was a dear friend of Ginny Heinlein, a lady I was proud to count as a friend too, and he was...he was special.
